49ers prepare to be without Clements, Staley

  • Print

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—Left tackle Joe Staley(notes) limped through the 49ers locker room with a bulky brace on his sprained right knee. Cornerback Nate Clements(notes) cradled his broken right shoulder blade in a sling.

Both players, injured during San Francisco’s 18-14 loss at Indianapolis on Sunday, will miss at least a month and a half. The 49ers host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday then have a quick turnaround with a home game against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 12.

The 49ers said Staley will miss six weeks and Clements 6 to 8 weeks.

Staley has never missed a game during his three NFL seasons. Clements has sat out all of one game, missing last year’s Dec. 7 game against the New York Jets with a thumb injury to snap his streak of 119 consecutive starts.

Coach Mike Singletary said Monday that Clements wouldn’t be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list and Staley didn’t consider his knee injury to be season-ending. Clements underwent a CT scan and Staley had an MRI exam to further determine the damage.

Losing these two is a big blow for the 49ers, who at 3-4 have lost three straight games but are still optimistic about winning the NFC West and earning the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2002.

“Obviously we’re going to miss Joe Staley,” Singletary said. “In terms of how it’s going to affect our offensive line, which in essence is how it’s going to affect our offense, you find a way to win. You find a way to work around it. Obviously he will be missed. We think a lot of Joe Staley. I’m hoping he’s back real quick because he helps us tremendously. At the same time I know our offense will continue to get better.”

On June 4, Staley signed a six-year contract extension through 2017 worth more than $40 million, a deal that includes roughly $16 million in guaranteed money and other incentives based on his play and whether he stays healthy. Staley, a first-round pick in 2007 out of Central Michigan, was approached early in the offseason by the team about a long-term deal as the 49ers were eager to secure the anchor of their rebuilt offensive line.

Staley was hurt when the pile rolled on him Sunday.

“I’ve never had a knee injury in my life,” Staley said. “I’m not really speculating (how long it will be). … I’ve never been injured in my life. I haven’t missed a game since my freshman year in college, so it would be tough.”

Veteran backup Barry Sims(notes) filled in for Staley on Sunday and will remain in the starting lineup during his absence.

“Thankfully we’ve got great depth and a lot of great experience,” center Eric Heitmann(notes) said. “Barry is a tremendous left tackle and he’s played a ton of snaps in his career and been very successful. It’s great to have him in the lineup.”

Clements is also a big-money guy on this roster. He received an eight-year, $80 million contract in March 2007.

Yet he lost his starting spot at right cornerback for Sunday’s game to Tarell Brown(notes), another player the 49ers think highly of after rewarding him last week with a three-year contract extension through the 2013 season.

That doesn’t mean Clements believes his status has changed around here.

“I’m just going to continue to be Nate and work hard as I’ve done my whole career,” Clements said. “Everything will take care of itself. As a corner, you have to have a short memory. You’re going to have good days and bad days.”

Singletary has said he will go with the best players who give the team a chance to win—and if that means regularly shaking things up, so be it.

“This team right now is going through some changes,” Singletary said. “You’re seeing guys step up, young guys stepping up, and some other guys stepping back. It’s going to continue to be that way. I believe in the best 11 guys on the field. Whoever that is, that’s who’s going to be out there.”

Niners receiver Brandon Jones(notes) recovered relatively quickly from a similar such injury after getting hurt early in training camp. He was active by Week 4. But Tony Pashos(notes) was placed on injured reserve last week with a broken left shoulder blade.

Clements said he would put all his energy into the rehabilitation process to try to get back on the field as soon as possible.

Singletary would hope Clements could be ready by the playoffs if the 49ers make it.

“If we’re in the playoffs, I want him to play,” Singletary said. “He’s earned the right to play.”

In addition to Clements and Staley, defensive end Demetric Evans(notes) is nursing a sprained left shoulder that’s expected to sideline him for three weeks.

    Observations:

Positives: Smith looked very good moving the team that drive before halftime against the Colts. He seems to be more comfortable in the pocket, and seems to be developing good timing with Davis and Crabtree. "Seems", let's all hope it's true. Gore showed he still can break a long one, and break tackles doing so. The defense showed it can stick to a game plan and perform at a very top level. We're still giving up 20 points a game...I'd like to see it be @ 18 0r 17. Was the D that good, or did Payton have an "off day" and "only" get 31 completions and 341 yards? Ya see my point? If that's a "good" performance by the 49er D, what would a bad one look like: the Atlanta game.

Negatives: Injuries. These can't be overstated or ignored, no matter how Singletary spins it. Take away a #1 left Tackle that protects the QB's blind side, and replace him with an undrafted back up, well, that's not good. No knock on Simms, just fact: they didn't give Staley a $40 million contract recently for nothing.
Plus, the O-line must have "communication and be in sync" to perform at a high level. Which leads to: our running game, Gore only averaged 2.25 yards per carry after his long run. Smith held the ball too long a few times, I'll cut him some slack, but I don't agree that he has "improved" or "aged" sitting on the bench, nor do I think he suddenly has developed the skills he never demonstrated in his previous stint as starter. Hope he proves me wrong, he seems like a good kid.

Advice to Smith: if you see an opening, for heaven's sake, don't be afraid to take off and pick up 5-6 yards THEN SLIDE: it keeps the defense off-balance....and opens up bootleg passes downfield. Freezes that safety. Use your mobility and arm strength. Then the rush doesn't focus on collapsing the pocket. Make them adjust to YOUR strengths....

    1) There is a possibility that a 7-9, even 6-10 season just might be enough to win the NFC West. That's a big plus for S.F.'s chances to make the post season.

    2) Seattle, at 2-5, is only one game back of San Francisco, and with a two game win streak (Detroit, they are 10 point favorites at home against the Lions, then the Cardinals), they are tied for first, if the 49ers beat Tennessee (no sure thing, btw) then also lose to Chicago. Very possible. Arizona is underdogs at Chi this week. We could have a three way tie on two weeks.

Seattle's D has only given up one TD more than S.F., yet everyone woofs about the 9er D being so tough under Singletary. Arizona's D has only given up one F.G. more than S.F.
Seattle improves just a smidgeon on offense, they could easily win this division.

    Prediction:

Arizona wins the division at 9-7. They get W's at St L (twice), Tenn, S.F. (hard to beat a team twice in one season) and Det. They get L's at Chi, Sea, Minn and G.B. The schedule favors them now.

San Francisco: W's at Jack, Det and St L. L's at Tenn, Chi, G.B., Sea (that winning twice thing again), Ariz, and Philly. 6-10......but could easily finish 7-9 or 8-8.

Seattle: W's at Det, Ariz, St L., S.F., T.B. and Tenn. L's at Minn, Hou and G.B. 8-8

Now, if just a few games go different directions...say St L upsets Arizona, and S.F. beats them again...and S.F. beats Tenn, we're tied.

LONG WAY to go yet....but the S.F. offense has to give the D a hand by making big strides soon.

Kudos to Singletary (whom I still have doubts about as head Coach material) for a good game plan against Indy and for keeping his composure late in the 4th qtr.

Good luck against Tenn, the oddsmakers have us 4 point favorites.....but now that the Titans have a taste of victory, and a running QB, can the 49ers get up two games in a row??

Hate to say it..but I think not. But who knows? Maybe Smith goes crazy good, and gets TD passes to Crabs, Davis and Coffee or Gore.

    Tenn 24-23 in an upset.

This is very unfortunate, but i believe that our schedule is still in our favor. We play 3/4 or 4/5 of the next games at home against subpar teams. with the division wins earlier this season we are still in good shape. we've been close in all the games we're we've had injuries gore minnesota, clements & staley in indy. we need that offensive line to get it together 4 gore. maybe the spread offense will open up the run.
    GO NINERS!

Too many gaping holes on this team to be considered a contender. OL, Pass Rush, DB's.
They're heading in the right direction though....FINALLY!
8-8 will be a good year for this team. No playoffs this year, but HIGH expectations for next year.
#12 You're an IDIOT! Actually watch the game next week.

Lots of good points on this bulletin.

    A) The guys filling in need to step it up and I'm really surprised how well Brown did against Garcon BUT Reggie Wayne scorched Spencer for 12 catches and almost 150yds and Clark had almost 100 yds. Sims did an admirable job.

    B) I was impressed this past Sunday on how Alex Smith's mobility enabled him to extend plays. This didn't have immediate pay offs but for the rest of the season I see this creating big play opportunities for the offense. Furthermore those delays of games were probably taken to save timeouts and well Alex probably saw the coverage and didn't like what he saw in the Defense he was facing. If you recognize they have the right D against your formation or play call either you audible or take a penalty or timeout instead of forcing it and turning the ball over. I'd be more upset about the excessive celebration penalty than the delay of game penalty. I think this has more to do w Jimmy Rayes play calling than Smith.

    C) Lastly although I agree w sle_man's view that SF should win some of their remaining games, I also agree w MDK that the team should take each game one at a time and I'm sure that coach Singletary has them taking this approach. TEN is a good team w a good running game. However I do believe our niner run defense is pretty good and should give the team a chance to win at home.

Go 49ers! Hope both players make it back soon!

Did you even watch the game? You are a moron.
Shaun Hill win games- please, what do you call the blow out to Falcons? and 21-0 to Texans? Hill can't throw anything more than 5 yards, the opposing team stacks the box. Alex completed more 1sts and has almost as many TD throws in 1 1/2 games than Hill has in 6.
You are a moron please go be a Raiders fan, they need more fans with your level of intelligence.

PLAYOFFS??!!!?!!! PLAYOFFS??!!!!???? they have a slight chance of making them now.. but I think myself and the rest of the Niner Faithful still have another year to wait.. Theres still quite a few holes to fill on both sides of the ball and I think the O line is a good start..Keep your heads up gang, the team has made improvements and they will keep getting better

Ben F, your comments are erroneous. Alex sucked in the clutch? What the hell do you call that 89 yard 2 minute drill drive? And he didn't have the ball in the final 3 minutes of the game. Alex played very well and showed far more accuracy and mobility than Hill. Yes, Hill is a scrappy player, but this team will never take the next step with him at the helm. I don't see how anyone could pin this game on Alex no matter how hard they try. If anyone is to blame, it's the offensive line for collapsing in the 4th quarter. But that's been the story all year. Our position players are actually showing tons of promise, but the offensive line play has been terrible (but I will credit them for 3 quarters of solid pass protection this week).

Big surprise, Smith sucked in the clutch and couldn't make something happen with the game on the line. How many delay of game penalties can a guy take before he gets benched. That interception was a high throw too. Hill could've won that game. He wins games. He has done nothing to lose his job to Smith. Smith should be traded so this team can realize that it doesn't need him and needs to move on. This is a playoff team with Hill at the helm. Alex has a good arm, but so did Warren Moon. Montana wasn't known for his arm. He was accurate and a winner. Billy Raye is a joke too. Letting Martz go was a big mistake. We are right back where we have been for the past few years except that this division sucks so much we have a chance to go to the playoffs and get embarrassed.

Too bad about Pashos, Staley and Clements. Three key players at their positions going down is tough to adjust to immediately, but it also creates opportunity for others to step up their game. I agree with others that would like to see the playbook opened up a bit to run some more spread offenses like they did in the comeback half against Houston. Davis needs to be receiving the ball more than blocking. Gore needs to be given the ball and this O line needs to step up for him and Smith. Looking at the remaining schedule, there are four likely wins against Titans, Seahawks, Lions and Rams. The remaining five games are looking like 2 likely losses at Philly and Green Bay, with the remaining three going either way versus Bears, Jags and Cards (all at home). The W-L record in those last three matchups will mean the difference between a 10-6 or 7-9 season. My guess is the Niners will go 2-1 in those games and finish the season at 9-7. Hopefully one of those wins is against the Cards.

Unfortunate news, but thankfully their replacements Sims and Brown both played exceptionally well. In fact, Clements wasn't even the starter this week. Spencer and Brown have both been playing at a high level, Michael Lewis is back, and Goldston continues to improve and also seemed to really help the defense overall by taking on the green dot.. The secondary should be fine with Bly as the nickel corner. as for the O-line, let's hope Sims can maintain his level of play because that blind side is crucial. I'm more concerned about Chilo Rachal flat out missing man to man blocks.

Singletary has to stop backing Jimmy Raye and swallow his pride and either let Tom Rathman or himself or someone else do the offensive play calling. How many games are we going to lose due to the conservative play calling of Jimmy Raye? As a 49er's fan for over 40 years this is hard to take.

Prediction: 9ers will be in the playoffs. Smith has finally awakened, and is showing some promise after sitiing on the shelf for awhile. Looks like a bit of aging helped. I think the game plan was a bit conservative against Indy, and was not yet optimized for his strengths. We played two of the best teams in the NFC (Indy and Minn.) and nearly won an upset on their turf. Just needed a little more consistency in the O, and I think Smith will deliver. Now that he has seen Smith in action, Coach Singletary will have him fully ready for next Sunday. Watch out! This little slide will get corrected fast! Nothin' but W's for the rest of the season.
