49ers shuffling offensive line

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—The San Francisco 49ers are trading places again along their offensive line, and even quarterback Shaun Hill(notes) admits that could be a good thing as the team emerges from its bye week.

Hill got banged around a bit too often, and San Francisco’s power rushing attack never really got untracked in the first five games.

The offense did enough to help the 49ers to a 3-2 start and first place in the NFC West, but improvement is a must if San Francisco is to remain atop the division and end a string of six consecutive losing seasons. That improvement must start up front.

“Yeah, a tweak could be good for us, without a doubt,” Hill said. “We have the right people in that locker room where we will make it work.”

Tony Pashos(notes) will start at right tackle Sunday against the Texans in Houston. Pashos, who has 54 career starts at tackle with Baltimore and Jacksonville, joined the 49ers the week before this season began after being released by the Jaguars.

Pashos is taking over for Adam Snyder(notes), who started the first five games at right tackle but now will move inside to share time with struggling right guard Chilo Rachal(notes).

It’s the first time this season the 49ers will have different starters on a line that experienced constant change and transition last year. The unit has yet to find the continuity and cohesion expected from it and has been a conspicuous problem area for an offense that ranks 29th in the NFL.

“If I had a concern that you have anxiety over at the start of a game, that would be it because that continuity is very delicate and takes time,” said offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye.

Running back Frank Gore(notes) will return this week after missing the past two games because an ankle injury, and San Francisco also will get a boost from the arrival of touted first-round pick Michael Crabtree(notes) at wide receiver.

But those offensive weapons can’t be effective unless the line is opening holes up front and protecting Hill, who has been sacked 16 times and is coming off his worst game as the team’s starting quarterback. The 49ers rank 29th in the NFL in sacks allowed per play.

Hill has been sacked on 10.6 percent of his pass plays, and only the Green Bay Packers (12.7 percent) are allowing sacks at a more rapid rate.

“Any time the quarterback gets hit, it’s too many,” Snyder said. “We have to do a better job in protection and in the run game.”

The 49ers have the league’s lowest rating on so-called power runs, which are described as running plays on third or fourth down with two or fewer yards to go. San Francisco has converted 43 percent of its power runs. The NFL average is 63 percent.

Snyder gives the 49ers more size and experience inside over Rachal, who took over as the starting right guard last year as a rookie but has been the culprit in blown assignments this year due to his aggressive style.

Snyder has started at every position along San Francisco’s line but center, with four of his 43 career starts coming at right guard.

The 49ers have not yet determined who will start at right guard, but said Snyder and Rachal both will see action at the position on a rotating basis.

“It’s a tag team, basically,” Rachal said. “It’s still a learning experience for me and I can learn from Adam. We’ve been physical as a line and we’re hungry and working hard. We just have to do better.”

Yeah the O-line could use a boost, but just like the line helps the passing game, the passing game helps the line and the running game helps the passing game, etc... This is a team sport.

why is barry sims still on the roster? coach talks about smashing people in the mouth. cmon the o-line so soft their always going backwards. where's the toughness up front? where are the kevin gogan's remember him. ryan o'callahan was available till he got snatched up. take atlanta's o -line 4 example still hitting after the play was over thats toughness.

Your dead on Clean Head -

All the Niners have been doing is drafting for Super Star positions.

When they drafted Alex Smith and paid him 49 Million - I laughed and said why can't we spend that money on a good young strong offensive line.

If you can buy the QB time and that is ANY QB he will get the passes done. If you can make holes and RB will find them. Hence this all comes down to one thing a Offensive Line.

The Niners have had opportunities with many QB over the past decade, but they do nothing to protect them.

I sure hope that they - get a O-line and bring up Davis slowly. If so they will be the premier team in the West once again.

hey, don't forget to lay some of the blame on Singletary's head. He's involved in all draft decisions. I remember John Madden saying that when he became head coach of the Raiders that he had heated arguements with Al (capone) Davis about draft stratagey . John felt the team needed to be built around the O-line first then skilled position players next. Al wanted to draft the sexy type players first and then defense next. John to his credit stuck to his guns and a majority of their draftpicks went to the O-Line. You all remember Gene Upshall. Art Shell, Dalby etc... You think anyone will remember this current 49ers O-line a few years from now? I think both Singletary and Mcloughan are in over their heads and make stupid move after stupid move then add in ownership that is a joke and you have a directionless, bumbling franchise. I look for them to move to LA when that new stadium is built there and we will be left with Raiders . And we all know Al Davis will blame the poor stadium in Oakland for the Raiders failures and he just might sue the NFL so he can join the 49ers in LA. So, say goodby to NFL in the Bay Area and hello to MLS and women's basketball. After all, that's what granola eaters, tree huggers, and gays like to watch while sipping wine and eating Brea

Why is scott mcloughan still GM of this friggin team? The offensive line is the worst in the league for a unit not dealing with major injuries. And its not even close. The guy should have been canned the day Marvel Smith retired. We're supposed to be a run first defensive football team. So why the hell does scotty insist on building from the outside in? We have great skill players, too bad the line will never be good enough to allow time for Shaun to get them the ball.

We're a run first team, and yet we have 7 WRs, only 3 tailbacks, one of which isn't even a true h-back, and our offensive tackle options include Tony Pashos, Barry Sims, and Adam Snyder. And people think this team is gonna make it to the playoffs, that's ridiculous. We're supposed to be a great running team, I don't see it. Take away Frank's 2 huge runs against a seahawks defense without half their starters and we're 30th in the league in rushing with like 74 yards a game.

Scotty created this daunting glass ceiling over the 49ers' heads by ignoring our offensive line over and over again. Once the final gun sounds in week 17 and we're looking up at arizona in the standings, i fully expect him to get a giant pink slip. Or at least i can only pray.

Talk is cheap. I want to see some results for once. The o-line has been an ongoing problem for years now. Screw the sexy pick or free agent. It's time to build the o-line into a dominate one again.
