The battle of two teams at the bottoms of their division rarely sounds like a scintillating match-up, but Minnesota's visit to Carolina produced one of the more interesting games of the early slate. Cam Newton(notes) had a three-touchdown game, and his kicker could have helped him get another chance to win.
With the Panthers on Minnesota's 13-yard line, veteran kicker Olindo Mare(notes) lined up for a 31-yard field goal attempt. Easy peasy, right?
WRONG. Mare's kick sailed wide left, handing Minnesota their second win of the season. The snap was on the high side, but it was down and ready for his kick. There's not much of an excuse for him to miss such a close FG, but the Vikings were quite happy he did.
