No juice for the Redskins: Davis, Williams reportedly suspended by the league

The Washington Redskins lost more than just their eighth game of the season on Sunday afternoon at FedEx Field, an improbably fourth quarterback comeback giving the New York Jets a 34-19 win— they may have lost the biggest part of their offense for the rest of the season.

The Associated Press is reporting that tight end Fred Davis(notes) and left tackles Trent Williams(notes) will be suspended for the rest of the season for violation of the league's substance abuse policy. Both players started Sunday's loss for the 4-8 Redskins.

"I received no information about it so I can't comment on it at this time," Washington head coach Mike Shanahan said.

The AP story says that a total of 11 players across the league had violated the league's substance abuse policy but that both Redskins players have "each tested more than once" with positive results. Davis and Williams will be the only players suspended when they receive written notice this week.

Williams is a former first round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and has started all 10 games he's played in this year. But as integral as the left tackle has been to the line this year, Davis however is perhaps the bigger loss to an offense that is struggling to put up points. On Sunday, he had six catches for 99 yards, the highest reception and receiving yardage total in the game.

Shanahan said he would address the issue later in the week.

It has been a career year for Davis, who leads the Redskins in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. His loss might be a bigger hit to the Redskins this year than his team's inability to beat the Jets on Sunday, despite holding a lead inside five minutes left in the game. He has 16 catches over the past three games.

"I'm not even going to talk about it," quarterback Rex Grossman(notes) said. "I'll talk to you on Wednesday when I know more about it."
