The NFL is expected to hand down the fine on Monday, eight days after Ryan told a fan to "shut the [expletive] up" while walking into the locker room at Met Life Stadium. League commissioner Roger Goodell is said to still be reviewing the incident.
Ryan's comment was a response to a fan's taunt. "Hey Rex, Belichick's better than you," the fan called out as Ryan and the Jets were walking off the field before halftime. Ryan snapped back with his retort, which drew laughs and cheers from fans. The incident was recorded by a fan, who later uploaded the clip to YouTube.
The Jets coach apologized one day later, admitting he made a mistake. "This is who I am," he said. "I'm about as big a competitor as there is and, at that time, I was in no mood to hear anything, but I also understand I have to handle that better."
Last year, Ryan was fined $50,000 for making an obscene gesture during an MMA event in Miami, an incident which likely played a role in determining the steep amount of this fine.
Goodell is justified in levying this sort of punishment; a coach cursing at paying customers and having it broadcast across the country is bad for business. And Ryan's reaction is bound to bring out more hecklers looking to rile up the coach and countless people hoping to capture that outburst on their phones.
