The
craziest thing coming out of the craziest NFL weekend that you could ever
imagine in February/March is the idea that the Denver Broncos want to get rid of
Jay Cutler. I'm not saying that it's true or untrue -- Cutler
certainly seems convinced, though -- just that it's a truly bizarre notion.
Cutler's name came up in trade talk this weekend, as part of a potential three-way deal that would've sent him to the Buccaneers, Matt Cassel to the Broncos, and draft picks to the Patriots.
I can't come up with a single reason why any coach wouldn't want Cutler. He's a smart guy, he has the respect of his teammates, he's got a cannon for an arm ... the only flaw I see in the guy is that he doesn't adore Philip Rivers. Come on, who doesn't love Philip Rivers?
Seriously, what kind of system does Jay Cutler not fit? Is new Denver head coach Josh McDaniels installing some kind of offense that requires a quarterback with a limp noodle arm? Does he like having a huddle where no one respects the quarterback? Does the McDaniels system require the quarterback to eat a five-pound bag of Domino's sugar every morning?
Cutler doesn't know why he was/is on the trading block, either, but he talked to the Denver Post about his time with the Broncos as if it's over. Note the past tense:
"My understanding at this point is they're trying to trade me," Cutler said this afternoon. "We'll see where I end up at. I liked it here, I liked playing with these guys but obviously they're not going to let me have that opportunity." [...]
"I'm upset. I mean I'm really shocked at this point," he said. "I could see why they want Cassel. I don't know if they think I can't run the system or I don't have the skills for it. I just don't get it. Or if they don't think they can sign me with my next contract. I just don't know what it is. I've heard I'm still on the trading block."
One possible explanation came this morning from the great Peter King in his Monday Morning Quarterback column. Quoth Peter:
I heard one other interesting thing Sunday: Cutler asked for a trade shortly after the Broncos lost offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates -- Cutler's confidant -- to USC after the season. So maybe both sides need to go into marriage counseling here.
So there's that possibility. And just for the record, McDaniels says he never wanted to trade Cutler to begin with, though he'd have to say that, right? Again from the Denver Post:
"We've received trade calls on a number of players, which is not uncommon this time of the year. I also think the sensitivity of the other trade that was occurring, with my relationship with New England and the whole Cassel thing, I think that stirred the pot even more."
And then McDaniels made a point of emphasis: "We don't want to trade Jay. We never did. He's our quarterback. We're excited about this season. And excited about what we're doing here in free agency to improve our team."
As a Chargers fan, I'm pretty excited about the idea of you trading Jay Cutler, too.
What happens from here, I don't know. I'd say the most likely thing is that the Broncos and Cutler work this out and figure out a way to continue the relationship, but I'd have never guessed in a million years that they'd trade him to begin with.

I think Jay needs to get to Denver and talk with his coach and clear this thing up and stop using the media as a mediator...

3yrs of cutler with a rocky up n down relationship with the coach maybe win 3 playoff games in between time, because brandon marshall is just going to keep screwing himself and the team and eddie royal will break out of there, stokley will retire, and they will go through their 30th running back by then....free agency will come up an bowlen wil try and keep cutler but wont franchise tag him because of his attitude and then shannahan will pick him up in san francisco after Mike Singletary gets fired in 2 seasons and shannahan & cutler will live happily ever after...the end.....
