I feel bad for the guy. The fact is, though, that the Dolphins gave up a blocked punt, a blocked field goal, and a kick return for a touchdown Monday night. That's three different units, all failing about as spectacularly as they can, embarrassing the Dolphins at home in front of a primetime audience.
When that happens, someone gets whacked. It's unfortunate, but that's the game. And since you can't really fire all of your special teams players ... it's going to have to be the coach.
Tony Sparano talked about it Tuesday. Via SunSentinel.com:
“I truly appreciate everything Bono has done for us,” Sparano said. “I think he’s an outstanding coach and a hell of a person and a really good friend. … It’s a hard decision to make because he’s a hell of a guy and I know how hard this guy works. Nobody works harder than him at what he does.” [...]
“Special teams is a hard area because I think there’s a lot of hands involved in that area,” Sparano said. “Players have some responsibility in that area too, and the players change a lot in that area. … Our players also need to take responsibility.”
Best of luck to coach Bonamego.
