BetUS.com,
never lacking in creative methods to take your money, recently listed odds
on who will be the next NFL player arrested. They had a short list of 8
players, and it looked like this:
Chris Henry, Bengals: 4/6
Pacman Jones, Cowboys: 1/1
Tank Johnson, Cowboys: 2/1
Ray Lewis, Ravens: 5/1
Steve Smith, Panthers: 5/1
Kellen Winslow, Browns: 6/1
Randy Moss, Patriots: 10/1
Ricky Williams, Dolphins: 15/1
Who do I like? Well, no one, actually. The only person on that list I see as a likely candidate to get reacquainted with the back of a police cruiser is Chris Henry, and with over 1400 players on NFL opening day rosters, betting on one guy and getting less than even money seems a little silly.
Much like Waiting for Next Year, I have no idea what Kellen Winslow's done to warrant inclusion on the list. Ray Lewis appears to be walking the straight and narrow these days, as does Randy Moss. Steve Smith keeps his assaults and batteries limited to the football field, and even Ricky Williams, I believe is high only on life these days.
So why Chris Henry and not Pacman? It's all about environment. Pacman's in Dallas, surrounded teammates who are counting on him, an owner who supports him, and a team that has a chance to accomplish something. Chris Henry's back at the scene of his crimes, playing for a team in disarray and for an owner who did everything but spit on his mother the last time they released him.
Pacman's like Dexter, and Chris Henry's like his brother Rudy. Pacman was lucky enough to be taken into a supportive environment by Harry, while his brother Rudy had no such luck, and was left to fend for himself in a moral cesspool. Dexter becomes a good guy, and Rudy ends up killing indiscriminately for sport. That's how it goes.
Others I'd have liked to see on the list include Jared Allen, Bryant McKinnie and Leonard Little. I'm sure I'm forgetting about a dozen other likely candidates, too. Most likely, though, the next to be arrested won't be anyone on this list.
