What to do with an indecisive legend

It had felt like something was missing in all the latest Brett Favre brouhaha. But that something returned today with a vengeance, and better than anyone else has, Peter King laid out the dilemmas facing both the Packers and Brett Favre at the moment.

There are two things Peter King is confident of:

1) Brett Favre, sometime in the next ten days, will officially request that he be removed from the NFL's retired/reserved list, and

2) The Packers would rather change the name of Lambeau Field to "Tony Mandarich Field" than see Brett Favre return.

They don't want him on their team (King used the phrases "makes the Packers wretch" and "desperately want Favre to stay retired"), and the only thing they might want less than that is to see him playing for the Vikings or Bears.

So if taking him back isn't an option, and giving him an outright release (which would likely lead to Favre being a Viking or a Bear) isn't an option, that leaves trade ... and best of luck walking the streets of Green Bay, Ted Thompson, if you end up being the guy who traded Brett Favre for a pack of gum.

There's still the option of telling Favre to stick it, and if they absolutely have to, welcoming Brett Favre back onto the team, but carrying him as a 3rd quarterback and making him play special teams. This is completely unrealistic, obviously, even though I think it would be fun.

King says the best bet might be for the Packers to try to talk Brett Favre out of unretiring, and given that that seems like a real longshot, it really illustrates just what a bind the Packers are in.

No matter what happens here, it's almost certainly going to end with the Packers being unhappy, or at the very least, upsetting their fanbase.

    MJD-
Are you prewriting the entry you will use when Aaron Rogers either kneecaps/shoots/stabs Favre in the coming weeks or are you going to wait for it to happen?

Look at Brett's picture, he really seems stressed. It's like, I used to play football on Sundays, now my wife wants me to cuddle and watch a chick flick, please, please take me back!!!!!
Poor guy, I think he'd even be willing to refill the gatorade if it kept him from his family.

All I can say is that I'm glad that John Elway didn't jerk my Broncos around like this. Really, he needs to make a decision one way or another, and stick with it. Otherwise people will remember him for flip-flopping like a fish out of water instead of being one of the best QBs to play the game

Nothing but a huge distraction for the Packers. IMO, Favre was overrated and his play spotty and erratic for the most part. His fame came from the occasional wacky play where he chucked up some forward lateral or something. Rodgers is far better at this point and the Packers should tell him to stay away. If he just has to play, he can go be a backup for the Falcons or something.

Give Aaron Rodgers some respect... If you wanted to play... don't retire in the first place...
The Packers are in the middle of preparing a decent football team to compete for the super bowl this year, so why throw a wrench in that at this point... Just go hunting and fishing on Sundays...

I wish you all would shut up with these Favre rumors. Every day there is a new one. This is quite annoying considering the man himself said he is NOT coming back and that these are all rumors.

It's about the fans, they pay to see him and they were 1 game away from the superbowl with Brett Favre. Screw what the Packers think!! Or what any other fans think. Ask what the Packer fans want, that's all that matters! I'm sure most of them would love to see him come back.

Jesus, Brett, please stop this crazy, yearly joke. You are just taking from your own legacy with this "retired/comeback" idiocy. Not to mention retarding the development of a young QB, Rodgers and the Packers as a team.
    Call it a day bud.

Actually, it's about Favre - not the fans or the Packers. If his head isn't into it, it's over.

I wish everyone would admit that he is one of the best quartebacks that ever played and still is one of the best in the league. He has earned to take his time with a life changing decision like coming out of retirement. Anyone who says otherwise is just mad that he destroyed their favorite team by throwing for 4 touchdowns or something.

Agreed, he is one of the best there ever was. That's a no-brainer. But that doesn't make it right to keep other players in limbo regarding a possible comeback. Personally, I agree with #9, he's not coming back. This is all just chatter and mountain-out-of-a-molehill type stuff. But there is no doubt he has been one of the most entertaining and skilled to ever play the game. Nobody plays forever.

I called this when he first retired! I am so sick of this. Is he that stuck on himself that he can't stay out of the papers and newscast? How long is the press going to paint this guy as being "What football is all about?" Call it what it is....a guy who is all about himself and playing mind games!

If he returns I think the team should at least trade Aaron Rogers. There are plenty of teams with quarterbacks that have less talent than him. They would be glad to get him. Rogers has been faithful to the organization (in spite of the ups and downs) and deserves some credit. With so many players bolting at the thought of more money, this guy stayed and didn't play. Give him a chance or let him play for someone who will.

if he decides to come back, trade him away or trade Rogers and worry about the future once Favre decides to really retire..i'm tired of hearing about this..i love Favre but he can't keep doing this to the Pack..he's being selfish IMO

The Pack should release him and let him become another Vinnie T. if thats how he wants to end it. You can,t take the heart out of a lion like Favre until he's truely ready.

Just bring him back to the bench - at a very reduced pay rate. Or point him towards Canada...
