Shutdown Corner - NFL

You all saw Terrell Owens pining for the comforting touch of the football after Dallas's loss to Washington on Sunday. What we didn't see, however, was the conversation Owens had with Romo in private after the game, which the Dallas Morning News tells us about today:

Owens, despite having 18 passes thrown his way in the loss to Washington, had what was deemed a serious conversation about the offense with quarterback Tony Romo after the game, according to multiple sources.

The types of routes and throws are what concerns Owens, the sources said. The receiver, who the sources said was venting to Romo about his frustrations, has not liked how some of the throws were coming from the quarterback as far back as the season opener.

Oh dear.

Last night on ESPN's pregame show, they discussed Owens's deep need for the football, and pretty much everyone agreed that things in Dallas were bound to get uglier and eventually culminate in some kind massive meltdown. I thought they were overreacting.

There were two reasons I felt that way: 1) Owens has matured a bit since the days of driveway sit-ups and "everyone gather 'round, point and laugh at us" press conferences with Drew Rosenhaus, and 2) the Romo/Owens relationship seemed pretty solid.

Romo's an unassuming, easygoing fellow who was pretty much an NFL nobody when Owens came to Dallas. He seemed like he was just happy to be along for the ride, willing to defer the spotlight to Owens, willing to constantly feed him the ball, and impossible to dislike.

That seemed the perfect fit for a relationship with Owens, where Romo could actually be Batman to Owens's Robin, while Owens was free to believe that he was Batman and Romo was Robin. It worked out for everybody.

But after just one loss this season, we've got the first sparks of friction. Batman's a star of his own now, and he might not appreciate Robin sitting him down and lecturing him about how he's not good enough.

Will it get to the point where Owens leaves the team, does some squat thrusts on his front porch, rumors swirl about locker room fights, and he accuses Romo of being a limp-armed nancy and sabotaging our nation's economic bailout plan?

My best answer is a conditional no. At the end of the day, I still believe that Romo has the personality to get through this smoothly, and that Owens has learned he has to keep his selfishness and ego somewhat in check, but ... losing brings out the worst in people. If the Cowboys had beaten the Redskins on Sunday, none of this would be happening.

If Dallas wins 12 or more games, and they never have a losing streak longer than one, I think that the Good Ship Owens stays afloat and manages to not barrel itself into the side of the U.S.S. Cowboys on a kamikaze mission. If losses start to pile up, though, all bets are off. If somehow, the Cowboys lost three in a row, I'd believe absolutely anything.

Hopefully, Romo will take the high road and just let it roll off his back.

Not sure what he is complaining about (if he is complaining) since Sunday it seemed like only two players were on the field. TO and Romo. Flat game plan, flat execution from everyone. Hopefully everyone gets over it and play like the pros they are on Sunday! Let's Go Boys!

Don't worry, Romo always lets them roll off his back. "Roll over, my turn!"

Romo: "There's no I in TEAM!"
T.O.: "No, but there's an AT ME. The TEAM is better when you throw the ball AT ME. That's all I'm sayin'"
Witten: "Well AT ME works for me too. I mean, the TEAM could do better if you throw the ball AT ME, too."
T.O.: "Now that's just crazy talk"

Personally I think T.O. would be making a big mistake with the possibilities of receiving for McNabb. Long term is with the youth of Romo compaired to the short term with McNabb. Of course T.O. will do what T.O. wants to do even if it's wrong, as long as it suites him.

All we know is that they had a talk and discussed the offense a bit. Owens was venting. He was frustrated over the loss. Maybe that is just because he doesn't like to loose. I don't blame him. I don't like to loose. Especially to the Washington Foreskins.
    Give it a rest.

If only the DEFENSE CAN COVER!!!! Geeze, for having Newman, Pacman, and Henry, they sure can't stop a pass!!! I'm a life long Cowboy fan. But when it's 3rd and 15+, I leave to get a soda from the fridge because I know the other team will just throw it for a first down!!!! It's not lack of confidence in the D, I just see how they play and know what they'll do! The cornerbacks always give the receivers 10-13 yard cushions. Then the receivers only run 7 yard patters. It happens ALL THE TIME!!!
So maybe if the D-backs would step up, the 'Boys wouldn't have to score a lot at the end of the games. They'll win, and T.O. will be happy!!!

Hmmm. Well, I do admit; T.O. blowing up on his team just took longer than I expected.
I am SHOCKED that Romo only got TO the ball 20 effing times, and he couldn't make a play
The ball was thrown his way 18 times, and he ran it twice, which is 2 more times than their early draft pick and highly under-rated RB Felix Jones. What an ungrateful piece of . T.O. belongs in a circus, not an NFL uniform.

Really. TO is double-covered and can bring down 7 catches and average better than 1 TD, 75 yards per game. Do you care about how football is played or do you want this to be a reality tv show? If TO is in single coverage you must get the ball to him every time. He is that good.

I gotta say, I'm moving on from MJD's blog. It's posts like these and the sort of bandwagon piling on that ensues that gives me no hope. Maybe I should just watch NHL, if I can figure out where it's being televised.
Say what you want about hockey and violence, at least the discourse is a damn sight better than the general foamy-mouthed soap operas going on in the NFL today. Not that I tuned into this blog for Xs and Os but christ, a little bit of sanity would be nice.

I get a little tired of reading the same TO bashing crap. You are of the ilk in the media that thrives on hyping controversy and when it doesn't exist you spin one out of misstatements and quotes taken out of context. TO is TO get over it. He wants the ball more so what. So do most of the receivers in the league and a great many of them are outspoken about it. This is such a non-controversy and you are simply pandering to the less educated football fan with names such as Bubba and Joe Bob. Why not just by them a beer and shut up!

just last week all the yahoo rumors were filled with owens and how he has become a mature team player and now the media takes one bad game and one bad comment and blows it way out of porportion. i guess jerry rice never talked to montana or young after a disapointing loss about how things they could work on together. in the infamous words of that moron from youtube "leave terrel owens alone!!" find something else to focus on seriously. there has got to be some other stories happening in the nfl. let's try to be original rather than trying to invent something that is probably not there. the media is probably more to blame for to's actions in the past than he is. i know that if i read all this stuff in the news about me i would be hard pressed to hold my emotions and keep taking it.

What was it, 7 of 18? Clearly, Tony needs to step it up and only throw the 7 balls T O's going to catch. Now, if only T O could let us know which 40% of the balls thrown his way he would catch.

I cannot stand T.O., he is the biggest cry baby on earth...it does not show teamwork or strength...How about standing up for your QB and your team, admit your mistakes and move on...it can't be that bad, can it? GO SKINS!
