Shutdown Corner - NFL

So Ben Roethlisberger was a mess yesterday, looking more like a modern-day Cliff Stoudt than the guy who led the Steelers to a win in Super Bowl XL. Benjamin floated three wounded ducks into the waiting arms of Colts defenders at critical times yesterday, outright costing the Steelers the game.

Maybe the injured shoulder was to blame (it was said to be at about 80 percent). Maybe it was that great Colts pass defense (allowing a completion percentage of 68.9 percent on the year). Or maybe Benjamin just had a bad game. I don't know.

What I do know is that last week, in relief of Ben and his bum shoulder, Byron Leftwich was pretty darn good, and when you've got a backup that's played well recently and a starter that's struggling, you've got all the ingredients you need for a quarterback controversy.

And unless you're a fan of the team involved, quarterback controversies are fun. I say we do all we can here to get one started.

Now, I'm not suggesting a major quarterback controversy. We don't need to go into full-blown Rob Johnson vs. Doug Flutie mode, or even Derek Anderson vs. Brady Quinn mode. To me, there's no question that Large Benjamin is the leader of this team, and that long-term, the job is his, as is the adoration of every female fan in the Pittsburgh area.

Pat at FanIQ disagrees with me, and orders up the big deluxe quarterback controversy with extra cheese. He wants Ben gone all together.

All I'm suggesting is that they consider Byron Leftwich for the start in Week 11 against San Diego, while giving Benjamin some time to rest the shoulder and get a little bit healthy. Mike Bires of the Beaver County Times is thinking along the same lines (though he'd like to expand that to the Nov. 20 game against Cincinnati, too).

It's at least an avenue worth exploring. What do you say? If you're Mike Tomlin, are you giving Byron Leftwich a shot against San Diego and their porous pass defense? Or are you sticking with Large Benjamin all the way?

I'm all for this controversy. I think Ben needs to toughen up, lose the drama and play some damn football. It is the NFL for crying out loud. Maybe his troubles are because he went to a Mac school (sorry Big Ten fan too). And lets be honest it was the excellent team that won the superbowl, not Ben Roethlisberger.

I'm a big Ben fan but I say bench him ("rest him") and put in Leftwich. According to Tomlin's philosophy, the person who performs best starts.

Ben has been throwing a little more sidearm due to the shoulder injury, taking some of the juice from his passes. When the pass doesn't get there as fast as it needs to it'll end up in the oppositions arms. The O-line is giving him enough time to either make the play or throw it away. As I've said before, he always takes chances. This can lead to great plays, TDs, sacks, INTs and the like. As Ben said, when he makes the play everyone goes crazy, when he doesn't they flip out and want his head.
I agree that Leftwich should have started the last game. There's nothing wrong with starting the back-up and things aren't going well, bring in Ben or vice versa. Not taking advantage of these options is what can lead you to a loss.

You can't find a bigger steeler fan than me, but I'll let myself be honest for a minute. If you look back, it seems like Ben is largely responsible for every loss. If an offense this talented is struggling as it is, it has to come back to the QB. I know a lot has to do with a new O-Line, but come on--8 freaking picks in 3 games????--that's on Ben. Throw Leftwich in. Ben needs 'the fear' and the offense owes it to their outstanding D to play some football.

Big Ben should get some rest, not only physical but mental rest, watching Byron peroform with his team, and going thorugh the menatl repetitions can only help him. I definetely agree with the idea of resting him with the Chargers, and if Byron repeats his last performance, then again letting him face the Bengals.

Leftwich isn't the answer - he's Kordell without the mobility. A power running game is the answer, but we don't have it any more. I haven't run the numbers, but I'll wager that a ridiculous percentage of our offense measured in yards gained comes from plays where Ben should be sacked but escapes to make something happen. Leftwich can't do that, he isn't any more mobile, nor does he have a quicker release or better D reading skills. The Steeler's fate was sealed when they overpaid Ben and then didn't draft O-lineman - I am honestly surprised Ben is still walking around. I predicted he would be gone by week 5 to injury. I also predicted an 8-8 season based on the schedule we play...could go as high as 10-6 because the Chargers and Pats aren't what they were thought to be before the season began. But make no mistake, the team has big issues, and with the Ravens finding an offense, we may not see the playoffs this year.

Big Ben is so overrated. Even his one strength - keeping plays alive after he's been hit - is a mask for a pair of two critical weaknesses: his immobility and tendency to hold the ball too long. Who would you rather have, the under-the-radar guy who is shifty, avoids contact, and gets rid of the ball quickly? Or the highlight reel guy who tries to make a huge play every snap, has concrete legs, and throws wobbly ducks into triple coverage?
I've never understood the infatuation with this guy. By all accounts, he thinks he's better than he is too, and doesn't do his film work. Not a recipe for success.

Hmmm, yes he threw three interceptions but Holmes didn't even FIGHT or jump for the ball on the one. The play calling was bad, throwing on 3rd and 2. We couldn't have a TD on the one where Moore ran three times trying to get into the end zone, as if that wasn't obvious what we were going to do. Byron is not the answer, he is a back up for a good reason. It was a bad game, he was making good throws and it didn't look like his shoulder was a bother all that much.

worst article i ever read... Big Ben has been doing great. Who is this maurice-jones-drew (MJD) that wrote this trying to ruin the steelers season? Regardless Byron stays in the pocket even longer then Big Ben, cant break the tackles, and throws slower balls. Big Ben is taller, breaks tackles, and has better vison. Also, I doubt byron could have delevered the flea flicker that lead to a steelers TD.

We shouldnt have too much trouble winning the division regardless of who starts. Baltimore is waay overrated (look who theyve beat: Cincinnati, Cleveland twice, Oakland, Houston, and Miami. ONE winning team) Just let Leftwich start, and let Ben recover in time for the playoffs.

Oh and I find it funny that other teams fans are saying to start Leftwhich. Doesn't that seem like if Ben was worthless and such a bad qb that they wouldn't want him to play against THEIR teams. That right there tells you that Ben isn't as bad as everyone is making him out to be, you want the backup to play against your team so you can win.

Between the arm, the o line, and his history of success making plays on the run, Ben is just flat out trying to do too much. In every other sport the coach can just tell a player every now and then, take a day off, go sit in the press box and watch, and get your head right.

Why isn't anyone saying anything about the defense yesterday? INT sucked yes but our defense was not stopping the run, and it didn't cover two touchdowns.

It prides me to see that Big Ben is finally starting to see where he belongs. He is not that great of a QB. He had the lowest rating for a QB in SB history. I love to see Big Ben and the Steelers fail. They are just not that good.

concur, concur, concur - give ben a rest and let the opposing defenses have to deal with leftwich. far too much talent sitting on the steeler bench to continue to have repeat poor performances by ben. and common arians and tomlin, why did you draft dennis dixon? the kid has tremendous potential and he hasn't seen a play since pre-season!

i say start leftwich n rest bens shoulder so he can return the favor that the defense is pounding out. we should have beat the giants, eagles,n colts. the defense has stymied all three offenses iregardless of their ranking. tomlin is going to have bigger probs if he keeps doing the same thing cowher did. give the defense some credit dont just say it. i believe the defensive units philosphy is that they are a team win or lose. they also dont point fingers as other defense units does when they bust their behinds only to let the offense give the game away.as for the shouldve been ints the defense dropped. hey they are defenders of the endzone n they do that better than anyone one in the nfl, they need the offense to compliment their efforts by going out n scoring points to nail the coffin shut. game over. go steeler nation go...............

Where's Slash when you need him? Bring back Kordell Stewart!
Actually, I think Leftwich is a great second option that the Steelers are wasting. He looked great against the Skins so why keep killing Ben's bum shoulder? Give him a week or two off and bring him back strong for the last 5 or 6 games to gear up for the playoffs. Leftwich is a pretty solid QB.
