New Orleans Saints second-year tight end Jimmy Graham(notes) was a standout basketball player at the University of Miami. As it has been for Tony Gonzalez(notes) and Antonio Gates(notes), Graham's basketball skills have served him in good stead when it comes to getting open in short spaces, getting vertical over the best defensive backs downfield … and flopping in a way that would make even Vlade Divac roll his eyes.
This epic flop came at the end of the first half of the Saints' 30-27 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon. The Saints were lining up for a field-goal attempt and trying to beat the clock, but they didn't seem to do it — before John Kasay(notes) could get the attempt off, the clock ran out. However, the Panthers inexplicably called a timeout, which gave the Saints one last play, and the opportunity to make the 46-yarder that turned out to be the deciding factor when all was said and done.
But on the play that was run before the officials called the timeout, you got the chance to see some of the worst flopping in NFL history. Seriously, kids -- this is MLS-level stuff:
Was Graham repentant after the game? Not exactly. As he told Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, "He's gotta watch the ACC basketball film. I take many charges."
Practice makes perfect, but that was pretty horrible. And as we found out in the Pats-Jets game when Deon Branch got a specious illegal contact call from Darrelle Revis(notes), flopping certainly can work at times. Something to watch from Jimmy Graham in future.
