Shutdown Corner - NFL

It's just J.P. Losman(notes) -- he of the 62.3 quarterback rating last year, a statistic in which he's actually managed to get worse over the past three years -- but I'm choosing to see this as a significant moment. Losman has put pen to paper and officially become a member of the Las Vegas franchise on a one-year contract.

Unless Michael Vick(notes) signs, Losman is probably the UFL's marquee player. That may sound sort of like being named the coolest guy camping out in line for Star Wars tickets, but everybody's got to find a home somewhere. At the end of the day, J.P. Losman is still getting paid to play professional football, and that's still pretty sweet.

Jim Fassel, the coach in Vegas, seems pretty psyched about the move.

"Listen, if he'd have went back to the NFL and sat on the bench this year, then he'd have been no better off next year. Whatever anybody thought about him, they'd still say the same thing. Nothing would've changed. ... Instead, you go in this league and you play. The risk you take is you don't play well. But if you're an aggressive person, you say 'I'm going to play well, people are going to see me, and maybe I can erase some of those negatives that were in the past, and a lot of people will say, wow, look at him play now. He's a new guy.'"

I think, for a lot of guys, that's the right attitude to have. The UFL's inaugural season will last six games and conclude on Thanksgiving weekend. Say Losman plays well over those six games, and an NFL team is looking for someone to fill in for an injured or ineffective quarterback. All the sudden, Losman looks pretty good, or at least less rusty than someone who's been doing nothing since last season.

And if Losman doesn't play well, then he probably ends up sitting at home, unemployed, which would leave him exactly where he was when he started. So why not take a chance, get coached up by Jim Fassel, and learn by playing, rather than sitting?

I'm not saying he shouldn't do it, but the flipside is that there is a financial risk, isn't there? I thought the UFL was paying significantly less than a backup NFL QB makes.

Well, yea you make less as a starter in the UFL. But you make more than an unemployed back-up.

Will, what risk? Sure, short term he'll make less, but he goes in, plays well and then come Thanksgiving, he'll be poised to make WAY more than he would have as a backup. What the heck, Rob Johnson got a five-year deal because he had one good game. A step back, perhaps, but I don't see it as a risk.

I can't figure him out. He looked so good when he first started for Buffalo. And with a name like JP it seemed like a perfect situation as a quarterback in the nfl. It looked like Todd Collins all over again the way he seemed to fall apart. What is it with quarterbacks and the Buffalo Bills? Todd Collins, Rob Johnson, JP Lossman. The only real winner they had since Jim Kelly was Doug Flutie. Hope Trent Edwards works out......

    Will,
I think you've summed up in a very short post one of the things that has caused us to bleed jobs for the last couple of decades.
The American dream has become to make more money doing virtually nothing over making less money taking a risk to achieve your goals.

As a Steelers fan, I hesitate to bring the name of the XFL MVP into this discussion, but Tommy Maddox did get a career reboot from that league. And he wasn't being coached by a guy who got a team to the Super Bowl.
Plus, when you think about it, getting paid $620,000 to play pro football for 2-3 months in Las Vegas isn't such a terrible way to go. There are plenty of players who would jump at that.

UFL is not professional football. It's an experiment that will fail. He would be better off playing in Europe or Canada, not the soon to be bankrupt UFL.

Finally, JP Los-ER-man is getting out of Buffalo. Not that he is the reason the Bills stink, but he sure doesn't help. He's made countless awful mistakes.

as a loyal bills fan, i say, good luck JP, we wasted a 1st round pick, one that had to trade just to get, on you. you stunk up our backfield for you entire career, except for those fluke 6 games at the end of 06(??). and generally had a bad attitude. so again i say, good luck and GOOD RIDENS!

That's the problem with too many players in all the major sports leagues, it's all about the money. He should do it, to improve himself and not worry about the money. Just play because you love the game.
