Trading LaDainian Tomlinson? The heck you say

Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune is, quite sensibly, writing about the Chargers 2009 season. Since this is a team built to win now, and now has passed without a whole lot of winning, for all intents and purposes, the Chargers 2008 season is over. That is, unless you place a lot of importance on winning tonight's game, which would be something like the 11,984th consecutive win over the Raiders.

Anyway, in looking towards next year, Acee brings up a possibility that I find to be taboo, disgusting, and tasteless in every way. I'm going to have to shower with a brillo pad and a bottle of acetone after even just cutting and pasting it.

Superagent Tom Condon represents LaDainian Tomlinson and Shawne Merriman, and the future of both is being assessed.

Tomlinson already has made it clear he is not playing beyond his contract, which expires after the 2011 season. The Chargers are not redoing his contract. Tomlinson is not pleased with the direction of the offense.

April is not too early for Smith to draft Tomlinson's heir.

The thinking is that Tomlinson will be the Chargers' running back in 2009, but his trade value is only going to decline as he gets older.

Tomlinson hasn't had a lot of room with the poor run blocking of the offensive line or a lot of opportunities with the Chargers playing from behind so much. But with all due respect to the future Hall of Famer, he is not the back he was in 2006, and there is no one who thinks he ever will be again.

He'll be 30 before next season, and it would not be the biggest shock to see him traded before then, with the facilitation of Condon.

It burns my eyeballs when I see a sentence with the words "Tomlinson" and "trade" in it. I am confused, and I think I just developed lupus.

If recent NFL history has proven anything, it's that there's not a whole lot of value attached to aging running backs. Say the Bolts snag a 3rd-rounder for him (and that might even be a stretch) ... for a team trying to win a Super Bowl immediately, what's a 3rd rounder get them?

Is a 3rd-round draft pick more valuable than what LaDainian Tomlinson might be able to do after an off-season of good health and offensive line improvement? And if they don't improve the run blocking, what's a rookie going to do for them that LaDainian Tomlinson can't?

To me, it's shocking to even see the possibility in print. I feel like a Packers fan when all the Brett Favre trade talk started, except LaDainian Tomlinson didn't make an ass of himself to bring the whole thing on. I can't think rationally about it.

I will say this for A.J. Smith, though: He won't let sentimentality guide his decisions. He let Drew Brees go without batting an eyelash, and I guess it wouldn't be any different for LaDianian Tomlinson. Myself, I'm so sentimental, that if I was in charge, Junior Seau would still be starting at middle linebacker and the QB Depth chart would read, "Brees, Humphries, Fouts."

So, James of the Raven's doesn't like Hines Ward of Pittsburgh, so what. His comment of putting Hines in a phone booth with other people that don't like him, and then kicking his ass. Well, mr. James you really are a [profane] How about I give you my name and address and you come and get into a phone booth with myself and my brothers. Your butt would not be coming out of the phone booth. It is so easy to beat a person when there are so many more than yourself. You just told the world, how big a punk you really are. If you can't take the fact Hines nailed you last year, you should quit today and go home crying. PUNK!!!

It's just not possible to think of: the Chargers w/o LaDianian. If LT does end up going to another team, I'm going to have to go with him.

The answer was there in Michael "the Burner" Turner. should have extended him into the next decade before the rest of the league knew how good he was, then traded LT in a Hershel Walker type deal

But Jyles Tucker? Lets give him an extension!

without LT, all the chargers have is Rivers, who isn't amazing.
maybe he hasnt been the running back he started out to be, but get rid of him and i think he'll be Michael Turner part II.
It would be the second good runningback SD has given up and I don't think they'll even get a look at the playoffs if that happens next year.
    Alex:
they didn't extend Burner's contract because they didn't realize how good he was. They had LT and at the time, that meant something.
besides, with the run blocking they have now, i don't think Burner would have done as well as hes doing now.

How about trading AJ LowIQ Smith and starting to build our messed up team back? How many more years do we have to suffer until Spanos understands that this Al Davis wanna be GM is NO GOOD and lets him go? Are we really gonna watch a star team being messed up with and ending up somewhere between Raiders and KC or even lower? MR SPANOS, LOOK AT DOLPHINS, SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A BAD GM CHANGES. PLEASE PLEASE STOP TORTURING THE FANS AND FIRE SMITH. In the 2 seasons after Schottenheimer, we were right, and you were wrong. SMITH IS WRONG. LET HIM GO!

All keyboards should be affixed with a device that shocks anyone typing "future Hall of Famer". Luckily for me, I cut'n'paste the phrase. And don't have such a device.

Turners play calling is the problem. The playoff teams all have specific identities. Turner can't decide what our identity is. He has the players to have a wide open offense and yet he calls ultra conservative plays on first and second downs in the red zone and then expects miracles on 3rd and long. He's too old and needs to leave with AJ.

If I ran the Chargers, Craig Whelihan would still be taking the snaps. He'd be backed up by Todd Philcox.

Let me get this straight. Norv Turner comes along and screws up this team and now LT has lost a step? Antonio Gates' production is down too. Has he lost something as well? No, the solutuion is to get rid of Turner and his .435 winning percentage as an NFL head coach.

Man, MJD! I should start keeping a tally of yours and Chase's Favre-bashing. It's ridiculous.
As far as Tomlinson goes, they'd be idiotic to trade him... wait, that's exactly why Smith would do it. He's an idiot.
