Tony Dorsett rips into Tony Romo for some reason

Tony Romo(notes) had a really bad game against the Giants on Sunday night. A really, really bad game. In a contest where the Cowboys were able to run the ball with ease, Romo threw three interceptions, all of which led to Giants touchdowns and directly handed a prime-time, network television win to the evil, hated Giants.

Romo was awful. He knows it. He admits it.

Does one bad game make him a bad quarterback, though? To some, evidently, it does. Former running back and Cowboys legend Tony Dorsett lashed out at Romo in a radio interview earlier this week.

"I don't know why on God's earth Tony Romo has been anointed a superstar in the National Football League. Tony is very young in his career. Not to say you can't be young in your career and be a superstar because you've got one up there in Minnesota in Adrian Peterson.

"But the thing is this: You have a guy who hasn't done much, and quarterbacks in the NFL, most of them go through this growing curve. He hasn't gone through that growing curve, but he was anointed this great player all of a sudden. Now he's having to live up to that. And obviously Tony has some deficiencies.

"He's a good player who's still learning how to play in the NFL, and I think the media has given him too much credit for doing nothing. He hasn't done anything really in the NFL to deserve all the recognition and visibility he's gotten so far."

Now, far be it from me to question the judgment of a Hall of Famer like Tony Dorsett, but I'd like to respectfully disagree here. Romo, while young and with still a lot to prove, isn't some bum. He's not out there "doing nothing." He wasn't "anointed" a great player. He earned it.

Look at the numbers: For three straight years, Romo's had a quarterback rating in the 90s, putting him in the league's top 10 all three years, and in the top five twice. Are we going to pretend that didn't happen? Does that not count, for some reason?

He is the active NFL leader in yards-per-pass-attempt -- ahead of Brady, Manning, Roethlisberger, Warner, and everyone else. He's fourth all-time in the same statistic. He was second in the league in passing touchdowns to Tom Brady's(notes) other-wordly 50 in 2007. He's been to two Pro Bowls.

No one handed him those things. He earned them by being a damn good quarterback.

Now, all of that said, it's true that he's yet to win a playoff game, he's failed in some big moments, and in Dallas, they're used to winning playoff games and Super Bowls. I get that. But honestly, has Romo been the only flaw on the team? Is he the sole reason the Cowboys have lost those big games? Absolutely not.

And I will grant that some of Tony Romo's notoriety comes from being Jessica Simpson's love interest for a while, but let's not get it twisted. He's been a good quarterback, too. Dorsett's talking about Romo like he's Rex Grossman(notes) or something. Tony Romo has played at a very high level for the last three years, and one bad game in prime time and the scorn of Tony Dorsett can't erase that.

Tell em Tony.. He buckles under pressure. Just look at how many playoff games he's won.. Umm None.. Dallas hasn't won a playoff game since 96 I think.. We haven't been doign all to well either, but were not the onme's making superbowls dreams every season and can't even win a playoff game.. We atleats have playoffs wins since the start of the 21st century.. Romo sucks.. and everyone outside the state of Texas knows this.

Romo has no playoffs wins.. the team last playoff win was inthe 20th century.. and he buckles under pressure. We haven't done all to well either but were not chanting superbowl every season and can't even win a playoff game. Atleast we have playoff wins in the 21st century.

    Redskins21,
How can you justify your statement of "Romo sucks"? If 'Romo sucks', what is Jason Campell?? The redskins are the ones who suck. Romo beat them with a broken finger last year in Washington. When was the last time the Redskins were even relevant? And how can a qb with a career record of 28-13 suck? The playoff wins will come, don't you worry.

Romo needs to win in December and get Dallas to a playoff games, but he has been far better than any Dallas QB since the AIkman days. If cowboys fans want to complain, think about teams that have Jason Campbell, Byron Leftwich, etc...or just bring back drew bledsoe, since those days were good.

What are you, Tony Romo's cousin? He's very average. Not worth the hype.

I can't wait till Tuesday morning when the articles are about how Romo tears apart the panthers.

Without those three interceptions, the only points the Giants earned was the field goal at the end. Giants fans should NOT be crowing about how great their team is. They're lucky they were even in the game to win it at all.

Romo is better than average. Way better than average actually. Romo doesn't talk trash or anything, so the hype is not his fault. Maybe its because he took over the team and has been 28-13 since maybe? with 2 pro bowls? could be it. Oh wait, nvm, 28-13 is just average.

I have to agree with TD, I am a life long Cowboy fan, just saying this so you know I am not a 'boys hater, but I have never been overly impressed with Romo. Tony is good but not as great as he is made out to be and I think he would even admit that. HE usually makes at least one bone head play a game that lead to the opposition scoring.
Now I do not believe he shoudl be replaced by Kitna, that would be insane. I think Romo can lead this team to post season wins he is just living in the shadow of previous great Dallas QB's and I think the media and pr department are trying to make Romo out to be the same, and he is not and will not be hte next Aikman, Staubach or even Danny White (whom I feel is very under rated, he lost several NFC titles to great Niners teams)

Redskins aren't chanting superbowl each year because they are smart and realize they have no chance. They are dead last in the division, and it's going to stay that way for a while. The playoffs wins will come, this is only Romo's 3rd full year as a starter, don't forget that.

Idk about all the cowboys fans, but i don't mind Romo having a bad game in week 2 if it means he corrects it and gets better through the season. If cowboys stay healthy, they are in the playoffs.

IDK, taking over for the Dallas Cowboys and going 28-13 kinda speaks for itself. Putting one of the most storied franchises back on the map kinda speaks for itself. Not to mention he's been putting up good numbers.

As a former cowboy great, it doesn't really make any sense for Dorsett to bash Romo, and it still baffles me to why everyone hates Romo haha.

MJD loves to bring out stats with a certain Chargers QB as well. Although stats do apply, in the NFL it is getting it done in the 4th quarter and in the playoffs that is the difference between Rivers/Romo type Qb's and Brady/Manning/Big Ben types. Romo is not some loser QB but he is not in the elite/clutch category either.

Practically any running back could have done what Dorsett did if they had been playing for the Cowboys in that era.

I like Tony Romo but I also think his youth at times has hurt him cause he loses focus at the worst times. And as I remember..a quarterback playing in Minnesota did the same thing his first few years in the Leaque..Bret Favre...he used to throw those interceptions at the stupidest of times...I am a cowboys fan and I am TOed at the way Romo plays in big games but its also early in his career...Like Favre if he keeps at it he will learn.

Tony will bounce back and play great on Monday. 1 loss is not the end the world. Being a "true" Cowboys fan means supporting the team no matter what but I'm sure those of you complaining about Tony right now will right back to cheering for him when he delivers a win on Monday night. GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
