Shutdown Corner - NFL

A lot of things in the NFL could stand some fixing up; for example, the Pro Bowl or the overtime system. One thing we can’t fix, though, is the offseason, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to make it more tolerable. Today, I present five steps to do so, none of which have any realistic chance of happening.

Step 5: Hand over all NFL disciplinary action to Judge Judy.

I know that everyone’s in love with Roger Goodell’s John Wayne approach to disciplining players, but I honestly think we could hand the reins to Judge Judy and not lose much in the way of stern discipline.

And she adds a sass that the commissioner just doesn’t have. I’m sorry, but you can’t put a price on sass.

We take the same basic format of Judge Judy, but we extend the show to an hour and put it on the NFL Network. The player can be there to argue his side of things, and if they want, the league can send someone to argue for a big, huge suspension. The Judge’s ruling is final, though. No exceptions.

Let’s say her first case is Michael Vick’s,(notes) and she decides that Vick’s paid his debt to society, and will be allowed back into the NFL immediately. Now picture the interview segment immediately after the show, where some out-of-work weatherman interviews the defendent and the plaintiff, and Michael Vick is celebrating his victory, while Roger Goodell stalks around the hallway behind him screaming, “THIS IS BULL!” It would be captivating television.

We’d have the same thing for Plaxico Burress(notes), Donte Stallworth, etc. Really, there’s no reason that these things can’t be settled in one hour. Maybe we could stretch it two, if need be. Justice is swift. Maybe there’s a hotline where fans can call in, and vote for the verdict of their choice.

And afterwards, there’s something to talk about all day long on the NFL Network. It would be a media event, as opposed to just a standard press release from the league. There would be highlights, like when Plax made his tearful apology, and when Judge Judy told Roger Goodell to shut his mouth. It would be perfect.

Chance of this actually happening: 0%

Would improve the offseason by: 21%

Great now you just need to come up with a 5 step plan to make your blogs tolerable.

This is a great idea, I think Judge Judy would be stern but fair.

mjd, I really like your blog and read it all the time. However, your five-step plan tells me that you could use a vacation to recharge your creative batteries. Then perhaps we can read about the all-name team.

Bill, I am going to assume you read this blog entry among others. Do you live in some communist state country where they force you to read MJD? if not stop complaining and find a new thing to read.

This is the best idea among all five. Roger Goodell going off because he couldn't get his way would bring copious amounts of mirth into my existence.

I don't know why everybody is giving MJD such a hard time.. Sure the ideas are ridiculous, but thats the point.. Have you people have no humor left in you? Instead of taking everything he writes so seriously, why don't we all just lighten up and have a laugh? If you don't want to, then don't freaking read his blogs.. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.. This is the sloooooww time of the NFL.. There isn't anything to write about besides gibberish.. At least MJD is making his gibberish humorous.. Keep going strong MJD!

I like dead Judy I like Judge Judy, the only trouble with this plan is that we would see places like T.O all the time wasting this plan, Michael Vick, Dante Stallworth, and others like these players seem to get a harder punishment from the NFL, then the judicial system. I agree that Michael Vick served time for banking a dog fighting ring, but he did not get punished for killing a dog's. Dante Stallworth got only 30 days for killing someone,Burress is still in limbo the judicial system seems to want to wait for the commissioner to do his job, or is it to allow him to play one final season. A fill these players get away with these crimes because they can go to the CFL or the UFL to play football. If you really want to punish these players its seems that including a clause in their contract that states may lose all guaranteed money, they are unable to play for any team in the world, and they are banned from any sport. These players are slapped and the rest with fines that same big to us, but are very small for them. If Idid any of these crimes I would be locked away for most of my life, money talks and they walk.

Lmao. This offseason has been really tough on MJD..idk if every offseason is like this for him but I think Yahoo! should really consider just doing away with these blogs and salaries until the season starts back up again because these are all about as funny as a sharp stick in the eye. The most amusing thing about them are the death wishes that people post in the comments xD
