Shutdown Corner - NFL

A partial list of the Madden '10 player ratings were released this week and they're actually quite solid. Who's going to argue with Peyton Manning(notes), Adrian Peterson and Larry Fitzgerald(notes). Still, there are a few surprises in the top 10 of the four offensive skill positions and overall defensive players. Here are the five biggest:

Carson Palmer(notes) (87 rating, 8th in quarterbacks) -- The Bengals quarterback went 0-4 last year before shutting his season down with an elbow injury. In 2007, the former No. 1 pick and two-time Pro Bowler led his team to a 7-9 record with a mediocre 1.4:1 TD-to-INT ratio. There's no doubting that, when healthy and on a good team, Palmer has the talent to be on the best quarterbacks in the league. He'll be neither of those things in 2009.

LaDainian Tomlison (94 rating, 3rd in running backs) -- It's not that LDT doesn't deserve to be behind his former backup (Michael Turner(notes), 95), because he does. It's just jarring to see, I suppose. Ten months ago, Tomlinson was a near-consensus No. 1 pick in most fantasy drafts (props to our Monday Night live-blogging partner, Andy Behrens, for ranking Adrian Peterson at No. 1). Now, he's not even the best running back from the 2007 Chargers.

Nnamdi Asomugha(notes) (99 rating, 1st among defensive players) -- The 99 rating isn't surprising, as Asomugha has established himself as one of the premiere players in the NFL. But the reaction to 99 rating has been a little, um, exuberant. Bay Area blogs have been breathlessly detailing Asomugha's ascedence to video game royalty, although it's done in a tongue-in-cheek manner with an acceptance that, as a Raiders fan, you have to take any victory you can get.

Terrell Owens(notes) (91 rating, 85 catch rating) -- T.O. being 10th overall sounds about right, but it's that 85 catch rating that's bothersome. Dude's got worse hands than the Venus de Milo. Giving him that score for catching is like giving Nicolas Cage an 85 rating in script selection, or Joe Biden an 85 rating in gaffe management.

Brett Favre(notes) (not among top 10 for quarterbacks) -- Clearly, John Madden played no role in the assignment of these ratings.

I know it is minor, but I love that you actually used "ratio" correctly. Put that along with you correctly calculating the hypotenuse ("diagonal") of Jerry Jones' Party TV, you get double-plus math props this week.

I guess Palmer's 2005 and 2006 seasons are irrelevant, as is the fact that the Bengals seriously upgraded their line...

MJD, how's about a preseason cheerleader rankings? I know Madden doesn't do this... But you should! I trust our judgment...

These ratings got ridiculous this year. There is a huge drop off of guys who had high ratings in 09. Take for example, DeAngelo Hall, who in madden 09 has a rating of 93, now has a rating of 68 in 2010. And the list goes on and on for guys who played poorly last season. A guy like Torry Holt went from a 96 to 84, but I'm not too sure about this drop off though. I think he's rated this way because of his age and not so much about his decline because he can still play . But guys who had a good year in 09 have improved ratings though, guys such as Chris Johnson(82), Steve Slaton(87) and Matt Forte(89) are rank from mid to high 80s. DeAngelo Williams has a rating of 95. The combo of double trouble, Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Willaims will be sick this coming.

Biggest suprise so far: How a moron like this writer still has a job covering anything in sports. I guess Yahoo is not affected by the economy as to employ a talent less juice box like this guy writing articles.

Madden hasnt good for the last three years. I know they bought out the rights to the NFL, but 2k was always better in my opinion. Need to bring 2K back

    Asomugha should NOT be a 99. He's great, but he's not All-World.

t.o is a still a top player. heck i think he's too slow. he's also caught more tds over the past 3 seasons than any receivers i think. i wouldn't be surprised if he gets better during the year. it's a new team so he'll be on his best behavior. the only thing against him is his age.

The reason most of these are somewhat surprising or unusual is because the overall scale for the ratings has changed a lot. The lowered and stretched it (mostly due to game speed issues) so that becoming a 99 takes a lot more than it did in Madden 09. In addition, theres a lot more players in the 75 - 89 range. For example, Carson Palmer's 87 rating in Madden 10 would have translated to about a 93 in last year's game.

Im surprised they dont have the real MJD in the top ten running backs. Has more all purpose yards and 40 TDs in during the three years he's been in the league. I also agree Asomugha's 99 is ridiculous but its the raiders why not throw em a bone it's not like they have anybody else good on their team.

Asomugha SHOULD be a 99. He'd be all world if he played for your f***ing team too.
