The absurdly premature playoff picture: Week 8

See last week's absurdly premature playoff picture here.

AFC First-Round Byes:
Indianapolis Colts
Denver Broncos

Other AFC Divisional Champions:
Pittsburgh Steelers
New England Patriots

AFC Wild Cards:
Cincnnati Bengals
Houston Texans

NFC First-Round Byes:
New Orleans Saints
Minnesota Vikings

Other NFC Divisional Champions:
Dallas Cowboys
San Francisco 49ers

NFC Wild Cards:
Philadelphia Eagles
Green Bay Packers

• It used to be the NFC that would remain the same from week-to-week and the AFC would get shuffled, but that trend has reversed itself. Not a single move in the AFC (Sorry, Baltimore; I'll explain in a second). Outside of the top two, though, the NFC is like a game of musical chairs at a Crystal Meth Tweakers Anonymous meeting.

• As for that Denver vs. Baltimore game and the lack of ramifications as it relates to this weekly projection: Starting with Denver, I'm not going going to kill them for losing on a cross-country tip to a solid team at home, coming off of a bye week. Of course, the bigger concern is that the Ravens laid out a blueprint on how to stifle the Broncos offense completely, but we won't know if that was the case for another few weeks.

• As for Baltimore, I'd have liked to give them a spot for their performance this week, but there was no one I felt comfortable bumping. Further rationalizing this to myself, one win now makes Baltimore a team that's lost three of their last four, with four of their next five games coming against very stiff competition.

• The awesome thing is that all this gets rectified on the field this week when Baltimore takes on Cincinnati. Absurdly Premature Playoff Picture spot ... ON THE LINE.

• Dallas was elevated to NFC East champion, because there was no way I was going to let the Giants stay there one more second. I guess I could've gone with Philadelphia, but those two performances against Oakland and Washington are too fresh in the mind. Again, the beauty of it? Dallas and Philadelphia duke it out this week. Again: Absurdly Premature Playoff Picture spot ... ON THE LINE.

• San Francisco re-leapfrogged Arizona as the AFC West Champion on the strength of their loss to Indy, and the weakness of Arizona's loss to Carolina. That remains a really tough race to call. Hopefully, the insane amount of rushing yards put up on Arizona this week is a one-time aberration and not an exposure. I'm leaning towards aberration.

i wonder who he has in the nfc title game and super bowl from the nfc side? we all know most of his posts are afc biased and big time defending superbowl bakers no matter what team it is but its even mor epronounced if the defending champs are from the afc.

The only problem is that the Eagles are 2 and 0 in the division and the cowboys are 1 and 1. Eagles are the division leaders and not the cowboys. This weekend will answer that question.

I would put Arizona in winning the NFC west over San Francisco as Arizona has an easy schedule the rest of the way. Atlanta will get in over Green Bay for the last wild card spot. Green Bay has a tough schedule and they haven't shown they can beat a playoff team. Heck I would possibly even put Chicago and the N.Y. Giants ahead of Green Bay.

    Atlanta should be in, and...
"The only problem is that the eagles are 2-0 in their division, and Dallas is 1-1" EVEN THOUGH THE COWBOYS HAVE ONLY PLAYED ONE TEAM IN THEIR DIVISION. lol

Can't really argue with this one. I would pick Arizona over San Fran, but that is too close to call.
Superbowl looking like Saints and Indy....we all know that would be too easy, so it won't happen. Who gonna beat them Saints? probably nobody.
My preseason prediction still looks decent..not great, decent.
    Philly v Baltimore.
    Ravens win!

    MJD,
Steelers fans thank the Ravens for beating up the Vikes the week before the Steelers beat the Vikes!
Steelers fans thank the Ravens for beating up the Broncos the week before the Steelers play the Broncos!
Steelers fans hope the Ravens beat up the Bengals the week before the Steelers play the Bengals!
    Cheers!

As long as my Colts are dominating, I am fine. Of course, we all know the Colts have a history of imitating a chaotic, if not self-destructing, team that make one mistake after another when it comes to playoffs, so I won't be impressed until playoff time. I am surprised Atlanta is not in the list though.

cowboys divisional champs...be realistic we all know they CAN'T play in december...And what games have they won that could be considered "big wins" they can be weighed against other teams. Eagles will take the division and it will be between the giants and cowboys on who gets the wildcard

Oh yeah and the cowboys will probably fall apart the last 4 games. So then the wild card is between GB and the Giants with Atl a solid wild card team.

why is green bay always in here
    Why Not Green Bay?
    take 4 Current division leaders
    Vikings
    Saints
    Cardinals
    Eagles/Cowboys/Giants
1st wildcard goes to either cowboys / eagles / giants (depending who ends up winning that division)
MJD is taking a guess that one of those 3 NFC East teams will implode and start losing - the Giants (i think the boys)
That leaves the 2nd Wildcard to go to one of three 4 win teams. Green Bay, Atlanta, Chicago.
Both GB and Atlanta have beaten Chicago, so the Bears are out.
Atlanta and GB have no other common opponents (yet)
They both have same Conference record of 3-2
    Next tie breaker is Points.
GB has scored more and allowed fewer points than Atlanta.

A quick little note on the AFC first. Mark my words, the bye will belong to the Colts and Patriots or the Colts and Steelers. Denver was and is about to be exposed for the overrated team their record indicated. Not to mention the Ravens will probably be in the playoofs and not the Bengals.
As for the NFC, pull the Green Bay C*ck out of your mouth and stop already. There is no way they will get into the playoffs! The Cowboys already lost at HOME to the Giants! Stop looking at paper and see what all these teams are really about. The Falcons are pretty dang good and the Giants are in a slump but will turn it around and get hot towards the end just like the Cards did last year. Falcons and Giants in and Dallas and Green Bay out! The Cards underestimated and overlooked the Panthers but they will surely be there instead of the 49ers.
I aint hating though cuz after all, the predictions made in the article are just about as ridiculous as the title advertises!
