Shutdown Corner - NFL

Lists are the one thing in the sports world that can be counted on to consistently fire people up, and that's one thing we don't do enough of here on The Corner: make you angry. Every Monday [or Tuesday, in the event of Memorial Day], Shutdown Corner's presents a list of five NFL-related something. Today, in-the-booth game analysts.

Between the retirement of the legendary John Madden and the end of the Tony Kornheiser experiment, commentators have dominated NFL-related headlines recently. It seemed like a good time, since the deck had been recently re-shuffled, to rank the best color commentators left in the game.

As always, lists will vary from person to person, but I don't think opinions vary on any subject more than they do on commentators. That's a lesson I learned with the Kornheiser departure post. I was shocked to learn how many people out there loved Tony's work on Monday Night Football. I really had no idea. With that in mind, here's my list, and I'm anxious to see where you disagree.

1. Cris Collinsworth. I guess if John Madden has to go, it's a good idea to replace him with the next best guy out there, and that's exactly what NBC has done. Collinsworth is observant, smart, and likable in a way that I can't quite put my finger on. The NFL is often a culture of large, intimidating men with egos, but Collinsworth seems like a guy who is very unlikely to steal your lunch money and give you a wedgie.

2. Boomer Esiason. Most probably think of Boomer as a studio analyst, but here, I refer to his radio work with Westwood One on the Monday night games. Boomer's very sharp on the radio, and if I ever follow this up with a list of the best play-by-play guys, his partner Marv Albert's getting the number one spot there, too.

His biggest strength would be his willingness to criticize, which seems like it should be a given with all analysts, but it isn't. It's not that I'm looking for someone to sit in the booth and yell at people, but too often, they're afraid to criticize players and coaches. They don't want people to get mad at them. And that's understandable, I suppose, but it makes for a boring broadcast that isn't as honest, accurate or educational as it should be.

3. Ron Jaworski. Jaws is at his best on the "NFL Matchup" show, where he can take your understanding of a play from "pass over the middle for a gain of 14" to something more like what an offensive coordinator or a quarterback sees. In his time in the Monday Night booth, he's managed to bring a little bit of that to the game, but maybe not quite to the level that I would like.

Why this is, I'm not sure. Maybe it was made difficult by the adjustment everyone had to make when Kornheiser moved into the booth. Maybe ESPN doesn't want him to, because they think people will find it boring. Maybe it's just hard to do that sort of thing in the natural course of a broadcast.

His placement at number three here is somewhat of a gamble that we'll see more of the "NFL Matchup" version of Jaws in 2009. We had more of that Jaws in the one game he did alongside ex-coach Dick Vermeil, and maybe we'll get similar results now that he's alongside ex-coach Jon Gruden.

4. Troy Aikman. Aikman will be a controversial selection here, I'm sure. People think he's biased towards the Cowboys. People think he overcompensates for a bias towards the Cowboys to the point where he's actually biased against the Cowboys. People still have lingering opinions about him from his playing days. People think he focuses too much on quarterback play.

The last criticism's the only one I'd endorse, but I wouldn't necessarily see it as a bad thing. After all, quarterback play is pretty important, and it's not like there are a lot of people in the viewing audience who already know what it's like to be an NFL quarterback. He plays to his strengths, and the viewer is better off for it.

5. Brian Billick. Billick's transition from coach to commentator has so far been extra smooth. His reputation as a coach was as an intellectual type who may have also been a tad smug and arrogant. Those aren't bad qualities for a coach, but it's nothing anyone wants to listen to for four straight hours.

But Billick has managed to take the intelligence into the booth while leaving the smugness and arrogance behind. He explains coaching decisions and on-field successes and failures as well as anyone out there, and I think that's the most important quality for a game analyst. If he stays with the TV game, I'm looking forward to him moving up the ladder into more and more prominent roles.

Feel free to rearrange, criticize, add and subtract, and leave your own lists in the comments. I'm curious to see who tickles your eardrums.

Jaws is pretty good, I think Kornheiser just made him worse by sitting next to him. Collinsworth has the potential to be great, but the only thing I dont like about him is that sometimes he is too negative and tight. He needs to loosen up a little. Maybe have a pair of beers before the game. Otherwise, he's pretty good.

i read 1 to 3 and thought, "wow, i totally agree with this." and then i saw you had aikman at 4...
if aikman is ever commentating a game, i hit the mute button and throw on some music instead. i always have a better viewing experience.

I'm surprised Joe Buck isn't on the list. After all, MJDweeb has orgasmic screams and giggles just thinking of Joe Buck's tight rectum.
    Ain't that right MJDweeb?

They're all fine I suppose. I'd rather hear the x's and o's explained rather than hear about next weeks matchup though and every one of them can't seem to stay focused on the game. When's the last time you heard that a player was in motion? How about who made or missed a block? How about what formation the offense/defense is in? No no, there's normaly just quiet time on TV while the play is going on. When it's over, they go back five plays to really really explain that one... or they just continue on with the story they decided to share... That is if we're lucky enough for them to stop jabbering on while the game is going on.
This isn't Baseball. In baseball, sure, a good story can eat up some air time while they're doing nothing on the field. It's a slow game, no biggie. Football is just a tiny bit faster paced though, so there isn't time to talk about Chad Ochocinco's latest attention grabbing antics... for fifteen minutes... there's a game going on. I could care less what his jacket says.

Aikman would be good if he didn't do cowboys games. He is way too biased and only talks about the cowboys, you never hear anything else about the opponent. It's either the cowboys are winning and the better team or the cowboys are the better team but losing because of some excuse other than romo.

I wonder if so many commenters dislike collinsworth because every writer seems to love him. I do enjoy his commentary, as I would prefer someone who is to critical over someone who is to positive (as long as what they say is correct). Maybe people just get mad when he calls out their team.
And Joe Buck is a play-by-play announcer, not a color guy.

Oh man, Collinsworth-less! HE SUCKS! He comes off as a smug, know it all loser. It doesn't help him to be next to Bryant Gumble on Thursday night games either. When they do a game together, I feel my brain melting. I have to say, I totally agree with you about Kornheiser and all the negative comments, but as far as Collinsworth is concerned, I think you are WAY off base. #1 is Jaws for sure!

Wow, what is it with you and Collinsworth? I don't get it. He's better as a commentator than as a studio analyst, but still nowhere near the best.

Collinsworth is absolutely correct for #1 by a large margin. Jaws is a blowhard. I got sent to a motivational speech he was giving at a large corporation and other than good ol boy stories about the Eagles days I had no idea what he was talking about and how it related to my company.
Has commentating gotten so bad that Aikman and Jaws are even on the list? Billick is a newbie, so he hasn't had a chance to make us all hate him. I like Boomer on the list, but he's not really that good either. Surprised you didn't put Matt Millen on the list just to pizz people off!!

Reply to #12 (Hambone), I have no problem with commentators being critical, either, and like you said, as long as it is correct, than there should be no beefs. That is not my, and probably others, reason for really disliking Chris Collinsworth. Like I said in my earlier post, he seems to be really full of himself and very smug. I also find a lot of his comments about Peyton Manning (he is not even my team's q-back, so don't say I'm bias here!) are always way off and comments on things like how even though Peyton Manning has the numbers, HE thinks Carson Palmer is the better quarterback! REALLY? Does ANYONE here believe that as fact? His attitude and retarded comments like that one deserve our disdain, not the fact that he is critical.

collinsworth? #1? for real? He is one of the worst in my opinion mainly because he is just too vanilla. he doesnt say anything that makes him stand out and none of his analysis is more astute than any of the other guys on the list. on top of that i find his personality annoying. boomer also annoys me and to me is a hack. jaworski is the essence of boring. he is more boring than collinsworth. he'd be a great color commentator on a show that was geared strictly for coaches and ultra nerdy fans. Billick I havent heard yet in this new role. So that leaves Aikman who i actually like. he doesnt annoy me with his personality and he knows his stuff well enough. plus he meshes nicely with the play by play guy which i think is usually joe buck.

    Collinsworth,Aikman ARE BOTH D-BAGS .
Aikman........Has as much personality as a CLAM !
    Collinsworth.......Just a arroggant az.
Jaws ...................acts like hes on the happy juice. Esiason.............. Never liked him ,but I like to see him and Collinsworth together ,I bet there would be some fights there with those 2 egos.
Billick.............OVERRATED AS A COACH and im sure he will be overrated as a commentator too.
Monday nite is down the toilet .
Jaws I can handle as long as he lays off the happy juice.
DIG HOWARD UP AND PLOP HIM IN A SEAT ON MONDAY NITE ,who would notice the diffrence with what they have now ?
Except Trico (sp) I like him.

Cris Collinsworth sucks!! He even spells his name like a girl. I think they should chain him to Dan Dierdorf and dump them 100 miles out in the Atlantic Ocean during a late November hurricane.
