The Packers may be adopting a third/alternate jersey

The Green Bay Packers, who sport one of the most classic and distinctive looks in all of sports, appear to be giving into the alternate/third jersey temptation.

There's no word yet on what the alternate jersey will look like, though it's expected to be unveiled on Friday. The rumors point to a throwback jersey, as opposed to a new design or an alternate color, which I consider good news. A throwback would be far less egregious than some trendy new black uniform, with a stylized font and green and gold trim.

If they do go the throwback route, there are some slick options. The Packers actually wore blue in their earlier years, and I'd like to see a representation of one of the following sets of duds:

I think the one on the right would have to be considered highly unlikely, though it would be awesome. The rumors first popped up on UniWatch, then here and here.

For most teams, there's nothing wrong with a third jersey, but when you have a look as distinctive and classic as the Packers, it feels a bit like messing with perfection. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but for whoever's in charge of the design, the pressure's on. The Packers' look is not something to be trifled with.

    its not a huge deal if its just an alternate jersey. the pack, as well as the colts and others, have done little to change their jerseys in their history, and theres nothing wrong with that. usually change is for the worse anyway. not a big fan of the vikes newer uniforms, bills uniforms are terrible, as are the dolphins. i wouldn't mind seeing the acme packers for one game a year. lol

    The jersey will look even better while Charles Woodson is headed toward the end zone after Jay Cutler's fifth pick of the day.

    Hey DAnte,, if you do the math Peppers usually shows up for 50% of his games, so then that would most likely be one game against Packers. So to continue, he would show up for half the plays. So lets say 30 snaps. Mind this is what Peppers is thinking about during a current play. ooops, Rodgers to Jennings 28 yrd tD. I think they take those chances.. On Woodson's behalf, he wants to pre-thank Jay for 4 ints this year....

    The new jersey will be money-green with "Ted Thompson - Super Ego" on the chest; on the back, ALL players will bear the name "CLUELESS".

    My guess for the alternate uniform is the only major change will be switching from yellow pants to gold pants. This is something the Packers talked about many years ago when alternate uniforms first became a craze, but nothing ever happened.

    A throwback alternative would be great if they stay true to earlier versions of their uniform. Can't wait to play the Bears again...Peppers was great in his day...but that day has long passed.

    I remember NFLshop.com and some other places selling a Packers alternate jersey that was gold with green numbers/letters on it. As much as I like the Packers, I can't imagine them wearing gold everything (jersey, pants, helmet) on the field. I do like the idea of the jersey on the left in the photo posted being used as an alternate for 1 or 2 home games a year.

    Once per year. No more than that, You just don't mess with perfection.
    Their jersey is classic and you just don't try to change that. One game per
    year and it should be the season opener.
