Shutdown Corner - NFL

The NFL has always been conspicuous in its silence over gambling. Even though the practice is popular both legally and illegally and points spreads are openly discussed everywhere, any talk of betting by the league or its network partners is taboo. So, it makes sense that the NFL would come out against a bill in Delaware that will legalize sports gambling this fall (a bill that was upheld by the state's Supreme Court today).

What doesn't make sense is that this opposition would come two weeks after the league allowed its teams to sign licensing deals with the most prevalant form of gambling in this country, state lotteries. (The rationale is that teams can make more money in the sinking economy.)

It's the essence of hypocrisy. Allowing teams to put their names on lottery tickets is a promotion of gambling. Why is it alright to spend $25 on scratch tickets but not to spend $25 wagering on the Patriots? (And to all those doubters out there, yes, lotteries are gambling. People in Gambler's Anonymous are not supposed to buy lottery tickets for a reason.) As Frank Deford points out today, one of those things is completely mindless, while the other at least "requires a smidgen of intelligence."

It's often assumed that the NFL is merely posturing in its anti-gambling stance. The belief is that the league thinks it has to oppose gaming on some moral grounds, but secretly feels beholden to the interest in the game that gambling creates. If that's the case though, why would the NFL sue Delaware? There's no ambiguity in paying a high-powered law firm to go to court over the new law. If that happens, it would sure seem that the NFL is actually against betting on games and not just "pretend" against it.

Either way, the league's ever-shifting stance on gambling is confusing and hypocritical. There should be no distinction between lotteries and wagering on games. I don't make any, but that's mainly because I never win either.

Hey Chris, I was told that at all of the Baseball Parks in Japan there are gambling windows right in the stadium, which allow you to bet on anything from the first strikeout to the final score?
Is that true? And are there integrity issues in the sport there(I haven't heard of any black sox scandals)?
Maybe the NFL can use that as a case study.......and we can finally get accurate injury reports.

one of my favourite quotes is, "the lottery is a tax on people bad at math." totally agree.
actual sports wagering takes more skill, knowledge, insight - like poker, it's strategic guessing, rather than blindly throwing your money in a giant pool.

Right on. Hypocrisy runs rampant right thru Goodell's office up and down. Next let's hear the story about how bad behavior seems to be rampant in the NFL (on the increase) since the Code of Conduct rules were implemented and ignored by players, and shoddily enforced along the way. I.e. the message to players is still the same. They can do just about anything without fear of losing the opportunity to play again - the ultimate penalty has and never will be enforced.

The reason behind this is the fact that they can take money from the state much easier than they could from other areas of gaming. face it gambling is gambling no matter what form it comes in. another double standard go figure.

Chris, you got it right with only one word - "hypocrisy". Kinda' like going to church to play bingo and thinking it's for the good of the "church". Yeah, right ! - It's about the money, folks ! And yeah, there's a difference between betting on a number's chance of coming up and betting on a winner based on some degree of knowledge about the players and teams.

I think the NFL are so against sports betting is because it could potentially open the door to fixed games etc, where as the NFL doesn't see any problem for themselves with lotteries....Oh yea, the NFL doesn't actually care about recovering gambling addicts, just profits.

gambling on the outcome of a game my cause a player to drop a pass, miss a sack, throw a pass away, etc. a teams logo on a lottery ticket will not, the outcome of the game is not a part of the lottery ticket, thats the differance,

There is a difference between these two forms of gambling and why the NFL opposes one and not the other. In the sports betting arena you have Organized crime and point shaving (just look at the University of Toledo). There is nothing like that in the state lotteries. Lending your name to lottery tickets doesn't promote gambling. It just takes advantage of those who do.

Hypocrisy of the NFL can be summed up in two names, Alex Karras and Michael Vick. Alex was a bettor and banned for it, Vick ran a book making operation and is being considered for reinstatement. How much will the NFL owe Karras in lost wages and pension when they reinstate Vick. The rule still hasn't changed just the way it's enforced. Same way Charles Mann was banned for the same thing Lawrence Taylor was merely suspended for, and LT was busted more times than Mann.

I've come to expect hypocritical but this is a new level of stupidity in terms of marketing and viewing figures. Imagine how badly viewing figures would drop if no one bet on the games. I watch it because i enjoy it but i know plenty of people who probably wouldn't bother if they didn't have a bet on. I also don't understand the problem with betting on sports. It's completely legal in Britain, I bet on football (soccer) every week it's not even an issue here. Sometimes i don't understand the laws in America.

so let me get this straight the owners can gamble and make money and there is no problem, but when the players decide go to vegas and play a poker game for a grand or Eddie Debartolto decides to buy a football team he can't because of the fact he had a gambling problem do you see a problem here let me make another point here this league is an owners league where the college football is more of coaches leagues that's what separates the two.

Once again MJD your ignorance is amazing. Almost as amazing as your rampant homosexuality. The NFL has been clear on their stance against gambling as it relates to gambling on NFL games. Allowing the images of teams on lotto tickets is not a form of gambling on NFL games. The NFL is simply marketing it's product, they are not encouraging gambling on NFL games. This entire article is a waste of time. MJD go write about something you know...Like broadway tunes, male hair removal, or gerbils.

There is a simple and HUGE difference between the two. When you bet on the games, there is a chance that organized crime and corruption get involved. If the NFL has it's logo on scratcher tickets, there is no chance of games being fixed because there would be no point. I thought that would be a rather obvious difference, and not a case of blatant hypocrisy. Go Saints, thank you for not being one of the mindless sheep out there. If I thought the NFL was doing something wrong, I'd be one of the first to jump on them for it. However this seems like a silly stretch in order to draw some interest in a scandal that isn't really there.

Legalizing and regulating betting takes the possibility of fixing out of the game. Keeping it illegal and underground is what raises that possibility.
