Shutdown Corner - NFL

Today starts the NFL Combine, or, as I like to call it, "proof that we care about football way too damn much."

And I'm not excluding myself from that. When the players start bench-pressing and running 40s, I'll be eating it up like everyone else. My biggest complaint about Combine coverage is that they don't televise the player interviews, because that would be about the most enthralling thing in television history.

The Super Bowl, of course, consumes us. The NFL Draft, which is long stretches of boredom occasionally interrupted by a temporary slight thrill, generates huge interest.

But the Combine doesn't even offer those slight thrills, and still, it's covered like the apocalypse. There's a "radio row." The NFL Network has 26 hours of coverage planned. ESPN alone is sending 14 reporters. And all so we can have intimate knowledge of a few practice drills, run mostly by people you've never heard of, that may or may not have anything to do with how well they'll perform in the NFL.

But the media and fans aren't the only ones who pay it too much attention. These college guys have spent the better part of their lives learning to play football, and they show up here, and they've got one chance, and one chance only to prove their worth. If they stumble a little bit in the 40-yard-dash or fail to make good eye contact in their interview, it could cost them millions.

Anyway, here are a couple of interesting things out there you might want to read before all this combine nonsense really gets rolling. Former NFL'er Ross Tucker writes for SI.com that the insane "prove everything about yourself in one day" nature of the combine can, somewhat understandably, drive a guy to use steroids. And FanHouse's Stephanie Stradley relays a story about an odd question Mike Shanahan asked Mario Williams in his interview.

Today, players are arriving, registering, and getting X-rays. The interesting stuff won't start happening until we're closer to the weekend.

The combine is nothing but a big crap shoot.
However, Adrian Peterson did prove to be the stud that he show'd during last year's combine.

The reason why scouts take the combine so seriously is because it does'nt always point to who the best player is, but it does point to who has the most potential. Teams believe that they can take a guy with raw athletic ability and turn him into a beast on the football field. That's why you a see a lot of guys who were'nt spectacular in college but put up impressive numbers at the combine, get picked before a guy who was consistently good in college but does'nt do so well at the combine. It's all about potential. Teams are gambling on potential more and more these days rather than going with the "safe pick" because they already know what they're going to get.

Although McFadden had a great season, why isn't anyone talking about rashard Mendenhall? He had a phenomenal junior campaign despite Juice Williams (Illini QB) hogging the ball and not pitching it more often. Rashard is smart, fundamentally sound, physically ready to play with the BIG boys, and is simply a pleasant human being (No, I'm not his agent or a family member). In an era where players are getting into problems with the law prior to the draft (e.g. McFadden's recent bar room brawl), Mendenhall is a breath of fresh air. If he gets drafted by the right offensive team, he will win rookie of the year. Remember where you heard it first folks ;)

sorry if the combine doesn't live up to the hype, but the combine wasn't created for all you espn kiper nerd sports writers, and arm-chaired fat-arsed fans!! let the scouts and coaches do their jobs for c-sakes!! if you knew so much you wouldn't be sitting at home on sundays with sausage pizza on your chins and swiggin' beer all day. all you guys are having delusions of grandeur that you could run the show for an nfl team if you had the chance! go coach a pop warner team on sunday for feck sakes! give you a chance to pull up your ol' 1970 bike coaching shorts up to your chest and slap a couple 8 year olds around! maybe pull out a lombardi quote like it was your own, right?

combine is a great assessment for pro scouts and coaches, because of some school's t.v. coverage, etc. some good player get overlooked during their respective season and it give them a fair chance to increase his stock. I think every player in the draft should come thru this assessment. a lot of players are slipping thru the cracks.

What round was Brady drafted? 6th? How about Joe Montana? Jerry Rice? How about Brett Farve who was dumped as garbage by Atlanta? How's Reggie Bush doing? It's hit or miss, but you've got to have something to work with. Game film is the best indicator, but because some teams have weaker schedules, they think the combines standardizes it. You either run a 4-40 or not, but how can you measure players who step up and handle pressure situations well?
