Shutdown Corner - NFL

It's been rumored for a while that the Detroit Lions would be unveiling a new logo, possibly new uniforms, and perhaps some new colors. Everyone had been rather tight-lipped about it, though, likely preferring to reveal it at a higher-profile time and destination, like perhaps the NFL draft.

Someone got excited, though, and posted a model truck for sale on NFL.com with the new logo and script logo (it's since been taken down) and the good people at Lions blog Highlight Reel caught it.

Obviously, the number one priority when when unveiling a new logo is to make sure that the model truck always hits the stores first. People cannot resist a good model truck. Except these people. They can resist.

Anyway, the Lions' changes are pretty minor, and I can't tell any difference at all in the colors. The uniforms probably won't change much, either. The differences in the logo itself is that our Lion friend now has an open mouth, an eye, some stripes to indicate a mane, better-separated paws up front, and a distinguishable crotch in the back. The distinguishable crotch, I find very becoming.

And you can see the drastic changes in the new script logo. Gone is the old, standing-straight-up font with the little embellishments in the middle of the letters that made it look like something you'd see in a saloon in 1893. The new script is italic, slightly curvy, and downright aggressive. GRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I predict that these uniforms are going to bring the Lions at least one more win than they had last year.

I really like the new look and by the way the original logo also had an open mouth.

Oh yeah, well they did just as well in the playoffs as San Diego did last year! Take that MJD...that's for bustin on the Raiders in one of your most recent blogs. I can put up with you being such a homer, but don't lash out with your Raider hatin'.

    Retard!!
If memeory serves me, the Broncos went 13-3, and got bounced by the Jaguars, then went with the new unis and won the Super Bowl. I'm sure the Lions will experience similar fortunes.

i think if they can get a QB (cutler) they will have a decent O, great WR, RB is good enough,
the helped there o-line some, there D needs alot, but cutler won 8 games with the 30th ranked D
so they should go after him

The new "Lions" script looks kind of feminine if you ask me.

Considering the old logo looks like a buffalo pushing a grocery cart (cart not included); anything different is bound to be an improvement.
Or you could have said that they hired someone to actually complete the original drawing where it appears that "suddenly, the animator had a heart attack."

stick with the old, its better. anyway the last thing the lions club should be worried about is their logo. logos dont win games.

Nothing to see in that crotch area, looks like it has been castrated.

well, nobody asked you, var, so stfu.
i like the new logo, but i wish they would have added a little more black to it. also wish they didn't get rid of those black and blue jerseys, but it is what it is.
i think the lions will win at least 4 games this year too.

I think they should take all the old stickers with the old logo on it and paste the owner down on the 50 yd line so he can get a real good look at what he has wrought.

The detailing on the Lion logo is a great idea. When I was a kid, I had no idea what the hell that thing was supposed to be. Now it's much clearer.

I think this change is what the Lions really need to take them to the next level. The Lions are hands down superbowl contenders now.

    Things in Michigan desperately needed:
New governor, new mentality on their loser unions, less domocrats, new basketball team, new football team, new wolverine coach and team, new lions team, new lions owner, aaaaaaaaaaaah let's distract em with these new lions accessories.
I am not usually a fan of change, and I didn't like the change to this "old" logo from the..."older?" logo, but these changes are pretty mild, more tweaks than anything...I still prefer the older prone lion logo when I was a kid, with the vertical bars behind it, and I dig the throwback uniforms with no logo on the helmet. No matter what you dress them up like though, as long as William Clay Ford owns them, they will suck as bad as his cars.

Dude says the Lions will get 1 win just for the new, aggressive look but the look won't win games unless the team has an aggressive attitude to match. Bring back the black and blue division attitude from years past and maybe they'll get 2-14 in 2009
