The last time we heard from Pacman Jones, he was about to sign a deal with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. Before he got a chance to do so, though, he went on UStream and acted like an idiot, so Winnipeg changed their minds. As a result, we experienced a 2009/2010 football season free of Pacman Jones.
Oddly enough, the world of football seemed to survive just fine.
We're not done with Pacman yet, though. The NFL's patron saint of lost causes, Marvin Lewis, brought Pacman in for a workout with the Cincinnati Bengals yesterday.
There's no word on how that workout went, but the fact that there was a workout at all is rather shocking. Having crammed a lifetime full of headlines into his young life, I keep forgetting that the guy is just 26 years old and that the superior athleticism that got him drafted sixth overall could still be there.
Hopefully, for Jones' sake, this will lead to a way back into the league. If not with the Bengals -- who had two corners last year who played at a Pro Bowl level -- then with someone else. After all, the Winnipeg thing was the last time we heard from him, which means he's gone almost five-and-a-half months without getting arrested.
For you and me, that might not be an accomplishment. For Pacman, it's kind of a big deal.
Like Marvin Lewis, I'm a believer in second chances. Of course, that's easy for me to say, since it's not my football team Pacman could potentially wreck. But evidently, he's got another opportunity. Perhaps he'll make the most of this one.
