Shutdown Corner - NFL

After their 27-21 loss to the Patriots, several Baltimore Ravens defenders had negative reviews for Ron Winter's officiating crew. Specifically, linebacker Ray Lewis(notes) and safety Ed Reed(notes) were unhappy about two personal fouls called against Baltimore. On third-and-9 with 3:35 left in the first quarter and the ball at the Baltimore 37, tackle Naloti Ngata was flagged for roughing the passer on a play that looked more like Ngata was trying to deflect Brady's pass before it was thrown by raising his arms. As Ngata's left arm came down, it grazed the right side of Brady's facemask. Brady went down as if he'd been hit by a brick (nice method acting there), and there was laundry on the field. The second roughing call, with 5:16 left in the first half and the ball at the Baltimore 43, came on second-and-11. Endbacker Terrell Suggs(notes) beat his man up the middle and pressured Brady just as he threw. Right after the throw, Suggs appeared to go low, but to Brady's right, in an effort to go away from his knees. It looked to me as if Suggs was trying to avoid hitting Brady in or near the face with his shoulder or helmet, which would have brought a flag as well. The Pats scored on both drives with those personal fouls.

Of course, the new "Brady Rule" promises stiffer penalties for defenders who approach quarterbacks below the knees, and when you do it to Tom Brady(notes), it's double trouble. The rule is supposed to penalize defenders who dive at a quarterback's knees without being blocked or fouled on that direction, but the NFL also leaves this up to the discretion of the officials.

The Ravens were not impressed with the interpretation. "Without totally going off the wall here, it is embarrassing to the game," linebacker Ray Lewis said. "Brady is good enough to make his own plays, let him make the play. When you have two great teams that are going at it, let them go at it. Both of their touchdown drives had personal fouls that kept drives alive. Did that win or lose the game? No, but it got them 14 points."

Reed was more distressed by some of the spots the Ravens received -- most specifically, two in the fourth quarter. "You hate to come into a game where you have to play against a team and the officials," Reed said. "Like I said, nothing to take away from their team, nothing to take away from the officials. We have to help each other out in a way to where it's near as perfect as we can be. Like I said, it's a game of inches. We have too much going on with this game, from where it's come to in 2009, 2010, to say we can't be a little bit more precise with things."

The NFL isn't going to change their rules about quarterback protection, nor will they change the rules about criticizing officiating in a public forum. The Ravens may be expecting apologies this week, but they'll most likely get some hefty fines instead. I'll just add that while I think some officiating crews tend to be made up of bumbling dolts, Winter's crews have been better than average in the games I've seen over the last few years. Roughing the passer is made up of some tough interpretive calls, and I think the refs are behind the 8-ball in this case.

I think the new rule is overly protective, but it's fairly applied both ways. The Patriots got flagged for roughing as well, and Flacco was barely touched. The Patriots were also flagged a couple of times against the Bills for hits that looked textbook perfect to my untrained eye.
There was one big difference though. The Patriots players weren't whining about it and the Patriots coach didn't launch an expletive laced tirade against the referee's like the Harbaugh did.

To me, there's nothing worse than a bad officiating call costing a team a game. Its actually a notch worse than the next thing being a turnover after a sound slugfest.

I agree with Bill. There were similar calls on both sides of the ball during the game. I for one, am glad they are over protecting a multi-million dollar franchise investment.
And I think it is a sign of the Ravens leadership (or lack thereof) when you hear all the whining about it after the game. But it starts with the coach. I lost a lot of respect for Harbough seeing him yelling at the refs..it even cost the team a score if you consider the 15 yard penalty that was called on HIM which kept the scoring drive alive. Complete lack of composure...what will he and the team do come December when the games are even more critical?

The refs ruined this game today. Straight up. HOW ABOUT THE 15 YD PENALTY THROWN AT HARBAUGH ON THE SIDELINE WTFFF. ...I've seen that once in the last 10 years.
Either way...Ravens still almost won this game if it weren't for freaking Clayton dropping the ball that would've given them a 1st and goal at the 3 with 30 seconds left. If they had everyone would be on the Ravens nuts but it didn't so we'll get trashed on for it. same as always.

sorry #4 but thats what you call terrible refereeing. The refs never call that any other time. Had nothing to do with John H. and all about giving the Pats more chances. Go back to 2007 when the Ravens almost ruined the Pats streak and Brady got 4 ATTEMPTS AT 4TH DOWN AND GOAL and won.

lack of composure my balls. Ravens play the steelers 2x, colts, pats, @ vikings and @ packers ...don't tell me your team has a harder schedule. Ravens have composure.

I hate the Patriots so much that I was cheering for the Ravens even though it would hurt the Steelers with a Baltimore win (I am a big steelers fan!)
Tom Brady is the most overrated QB this season!!
As the NBC guy said during SNL, take off the skirt and play ball Brady!

It's been a long time since I saw the unsportsmanlike penalty called on a coach, but its been even longer since I saw a coach openly swearing at the referee on national TV. I don't think the ref has much choice when the coach disrespects the game like that.

You can't sack Brady, only rough that passer. I'm not a fan of either team, but the both roughing calls were laughable, and sadly it might have cost Baltimore the game, Pats were lucky today as usual. Still think Baltimore is tops in AFC though, and I have a feeling that if that game were nationally televised, those calls wouldn't have been made.
And either Brady is a prophet or the ref seemed to listen to him on the Suggs 'roughing', because there was no flag, and it didnt look like Brady got hit, he stepped back to avoid contact, and after he saw that the pass was incomplete he turned around and appealed to the ref, and 3-4 seconds later got a flag, ridiculous.
    Brady - Prophet or preference?

Shocker to see some bitter Ravens fans. I guess from another perspective, it's good to see that player/fan loyalty, whining and making excuses for their shortcomings.

don e....the game is over, stop crying for Chissakes...enough. If the Ravens are that good (they're not) They'll get another crack at the Pats in the playoffs. Yeah I know. You can cry all over again about whatever new excuse you come up with for that game.

the ngata foul i can see being malarky, but suggs was spearing for brady's right knee. the only reason why "suggs appeared to go low, but to Brady's right, in an effort to go away from his knees" was because brady moved out of the way and brady released the ball well before terrell even got there. the ravens take pride in head hunting, that's cool, but they should avoid blatant attempts at ending a qbs career. im pretty sure 70% of the games this year have had bad roughing calls effect the game.

The Ravens are a reflection of their Coach !! Harbaugh went through this childish tirade throughout the second half...
By the end of the game the whole team were reaching for handkercheifs !! They fine players for acting like morons on national TV.... What about a Coach ???? This is a sport being watched on National TV by a mixed audience including children....they don't have to watch a spoiled brat ranting and raving like someone was stealing his ice cream cone !!!
Then at the end of the game he rebuffs Bellicheck when Bellicheck tried to shake his hand at the end of the game
as is tradition ......,What a classless peice of garbage !! The Commisioner should have this little girl make a public apology on national tv and direct him to go to couciling on how to act like an adult !!! Hey Harbaugh if you prepared your team well enough they would have won and you wouldn't have had to blame the refs !!!
