Shutdown Corner - NFL

Okay, so Buddy Ryan isn't dead. But when someone tells him about this A-11 offense, he's going to go dig a hole, throw himself into it, and use a remote control backhoe to bury himself, just so he can spin in his grave.

Kevin Gilbride once ran the "run-and shoot" offense as Ryan's offensive coordinator, and it got him punched in the face. And that was a simple one quarterback, 4 wide receiver set. The A-11 features one center, two quarterbacks, and then ... well, whatever the hell you want, really. Ryan would've beaten Gilbride to death with a rusty railroad spike had he tried that.

It's legal, it's legit, and it's happening in high school football in California. It was developed by Kurt Bryan and Steve Humphries of Piedmont High School, and college and NFL coaches have come to Piedmont to study it. Bryan estimates that 35-40 Division 1A schools have contacted him seeking more information.

Here's how it works. You've got a center, most of the time flanked by two tight ends. Behind that, you've got two quarterbacks. Other than that, you've got receivers and running backs all over the place, and the idea is that the field becomes waaaaay spread out, and there are about a billion different places the football can go.

As long as they get the requisite number of players on the line of scrimmage, and the requisite number of players don't take off downfield, it's as legal and wacky as a Reno brothel. You can see it in action here.

Will it ever become commonplace in the NFL? I'd love to scoff and say no, it's too quirky and it's just a fad, but someone once probably said that about the forward pass, too.

Gracias, Pro Football Talk.

It looks like an Arena football game with more people on the field.

Its not out of the question to say it wont happen in the NFL. Although id rather not see it happen. But honestly the only QB i could see perfect this is Peyton Manning. He has a fast release and he thinks fast for the most part. Unless of course, Tom Brady gets those easy slant routes that my 6 year old cousin could execute.

Jimmy everyone knows Manning could only perform this with Probowl receivers in a dome, and certainly not in a playoff game.

A good blitzing OLB and/or pass rushing DE would kill that offense in about 3 plays.

it's like the atkins diet of offensive formations. it works for awhile while you starve yourself from the basics. then one day when you can barely do the simplistic things any more, you binge on all those great plays you've been missing... then you gain all the weight back and realize you just have to do it the hard way.

lol ok Patrick. Im not a Colts or Manning fan or anything but i do respect Peyton. He may have underperformed in the playoffs. And he even underperformed during the Colts Superbowl run. But he still is an overall good QB. Lets not get started on Tom Brady and his easy offense. Not to mention the help of some intel..........

Alot of missed tackles and blown coverages in the video. I don't think it could hold up at the PRO level

It wont work in the NFL for the same reason the option doesnt work in the NFL. Defenses are way to fast and too smart at the pro level for soemthing like this to work.

I agree with number 17. Defensive backs are big, fast and intelligent. Plus, not every QB would be willing to run if necessary, especially giving how easy the defense can collapse that type of offensive line.

I wouldn' be suprised to see it every now and then for a trick play or something. If it has a chance of working, someone will use it.

This offense is just PISS, if this was any good you would have seen it in the NFL by now. This is just a fancy mess on a football field. Just a bunch of un-necessary cheap razzle dazzle created to hopefully gain attention good job you got it.

Guys, guys... let's look at this as what it is. An innovative, if unnecesarilly flashy, offensive gameplan that helped a mediocre team improve. On whether or not it will work in the NFL, no, it won't. not as a base gameplan anyway. But for a Jets or Bears team that needs a trick play or two to score 6, this may be just what Dr. Atkins ordered.

    A-11 OFFENSE
Yes it's real football. It's a long time coming but what you have here is good old street/park football. I don't know about the rest of the country, but out west this style of play is common. A few less players and pads
no refs and often to much beer, please no fighting after the game.
    Lets play football.

Makes the "Run and Shoot" look like Bill Parcells ball-control offense. I think that they should call it the "Spray and Pray".
