Shutdown Corner - NFL

As a general principle, I do not believe in having two favorite teams, or having a "second favorite" team. It's part of my own personal worldview. Yours may differ.

But this Sunday, when the 49ers put on their throwbacks for their season finale against the Redskins, I might feel differently. Because not only will the throwback decor adorn the heads, torsos, and legs of the 49ers ... they're also going throwback with their upper lips.

They're all growing mustaches for the game.

It's the most beautiful damn thing I've ever heard. From SFGate.com:

"Most of us have been working on our mustaches," said Hill, who led the 49ers on two touchdown drives in the final seven minutes to beat the Rams. "I started four weeks ago. How bad is that?"

Hill said his offensive linemen instigated the 'staches in honor of their predecessors with an eye toward the throwback game in the finale.

"Every single day that we walk through here, you just can't help but admire John Ayers' mustache. It's awesome," Hill said.

You know what? John Ayers' mustache is awesome. And Shaun Hill's mustache will be awesome, too. Not necessarily because he has any superior ability to grow luscious lip fur, but because his heart is in the right place.

Honoring the mustachioed greats of yesteryear is a wonderful thing to do. This time of year, everyone knows it's the thought that counts. And the thought of a team coming together for such a beautiful common purpose is a Christmas miracle.

While you're honoring yesterday's heroes with the plain red jerseys, the flat gold pants and the mustaches, 49ers ... go ahead and do one more thing that the old 49ers used to do. Win.

I still want my Redskins to win. I must be sick. Happy Holidays to all. I suppose I can just get along for a little while - but not for long!! :)

I'm not a 49ers fan, but I've decided to grow a stache in the spirit of the season.
    Feliz Navidad!

I can't wait to see the 49ers show up in their Jean Jackets, Jean shirts, and jeans with a comb sticking out their back pockets. That is the out fit of every man with a 'stach. Maybe they will all buy matching 77 Corvettes also.

Worst thing about mustaches is the smell left after eatting a cheese pizza.
Gets all up in there and crustifies.
It's horrible. Smells like 2 year old milk product right under your shnoz.

i can't wait to see this. i remember meeting ray wersching at a giants game as a kid. those guys were a classy group. even after they started winning superbowls they would talk to any fan. there is a great picture in the 49th anniversary book of joe montana with a fu man chu. to see a team in the modern era kick it old school like this makes me proud to be a football fan and definitely proud to be a niner fan!

Makes sense MJD... if there is one team with a more fair-weather fan base than your Chargers, it's the Niners.
If my team were as bad as the Niners (which they are), I don't think I'd be too happy about them wrapping up a craptastic season by worrying about their facial hair going into week 17.

Wow - "Envigado" you apparently haven't been to a game or met a 49er fan. ANY team that has been this consistently craptastic for this long would have been sold or moved 5 years ago. The ONLY reason they still play in the Bay Area is the 49er Faithful who still love to watch/attend games/buy merchandise etc. We watch the painful blowouts, interceptions, big plays for opposing teams all out of love for the past and hope for the future. I will laugh for/at you when we take the field in the uni's that won us 5 Super Bowls and the collective power of the mustache makes you eat your words. Oh yea - and Singletary could kick your ass!

Nice to see a team that's out of the post season having so much fun! This is much better than the Earth Wind & Fire thing, too. I'll be rooting for the 9ers on Sunday and Singletary in the offseason.

Might want to wear the 80s glory ala Jerry, Roger Craig, Joe, Ronnie and get inspired. Maybe Sing can wear a bigger cross, or if the team keeps winning, everyone can thow them on.
