Shutdown Corner - NFL

The injury reports from today's games read like a who's who of recent NFL standouts. An All-Pro safety, the starting quarterback off a division leader, three starting running backs from playoff contenders and two long-time offensive lineman were among the carnage in a day that could come back to haunt a number of teams with Super Bowl aspirations.

The list of the fallen include:

Cedric Benson(notes) (RB, Cincinnati Bengals) -- Hip

Ronnie Brown(notes) (RB, Miami Dolphins) -- Ankle

Marc Colombo(notes) (T, Dallas Cowboys) -- Broken leg

Jordan Gross(notes) (T, Carolina Panthers) -- Ankle

Julius Jones(notes) (RB, Seattle Seahawks) -- Chest

Kyle Orton(notes) (QB, Denver Broncos) -- Ankle

Michael Turner(notes) (RB, Atlanta Falcons) =- Ankle

Brian Westbrook(notes) (RB, Philadelphia Eagles) -- Concussion

Orton will reportedly miss next week's game, Turner and Benson are said to have potentially "serious" injuries and Westbrook's concussion was his second in 20 days. His loss wouldn't devastate the Eagles (at this point, it's almost a surprise when he does play), but prolonged absences by the others could mean the difference between a postseason berth or mid-January tee times.

Today's list isn't out of the ordinary or anything. The crawl on SportsCenter every Monday morning shows more medical conditions than it does scores. However, days like today should remind the NFL that it's hard enough for players to get through a 16-game season, let alone the 18-game season that Roger Goodell would love to expand to.

If you had given me this list last year I wouldnt have credited Orton's injury as a potential playoff ruiner but oddly enough this year I think that may be the biggest injury on the list. The running game in Denver is showing some pop and consistency that it has missed in past years but Denver's offense has ridden on Orton a lot this year. That was evident in the second half collapse against the skins when Chris Simms couldnt get anything going.

The Bengals may be able to cope with the injury to Benson better than the others simply because they play Oakland, Cleveland and Detroit in their next 3 games.

I think the players are getting so big and fast that no amount of equipment can prevent serious injuries. There should at least be a weight limit by position in the NFL. None of the players would have much trouble reaching it. We don't need 345 pound guys hitting people while running at 4.6 speed!

Someone needs to remind the writer that that's why these guys make the big bucks! Even the minimum wage players make more than most of their fans {$265,000.00 a year for rookies}......just play the damn game.....no matter how many games the season is.

The NFL needs to expand the rosters. In today's games, a 53 man roster is just not enough.

Where do you get the information that Benson has a "serious injury?" From the link that you've given, it only says Turner might have a serious injury.

theres nothing about bensons injury being serious. all reports ive seen say its the same hip flexor injury and they may rest him next week versus oakland. i wish they would sign dede dorsey back! i love cedric but let him get healthy with the light schedule upcoming.

NOO!!! KYLE CAN'T MISS THE NEXT GAME!! CHRIS SIMMS ALREADY LOST THE GAME FOR US TO A BAD TEAM, KNOW HE'LL LOSE THE GAME FOR US TO A GOOD TEAM!!!
In other words, if Kyle Orton DOES miss our next game, we lose.

    1. Take off the helmet and heavy pads, Injuries will go down.
    2. Stop taking players in and out on every play and you will lessen injuries, When you are hot you get injured less, and when you cool down, it gets tougher as the game goes on to start again.
It is obvious how to fix the problem. But most yaps don't want to see football, they want to see car crashes, and then how do we sell logo helmets.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Bears are still going to have Ron Turner available and calling plays for the offense, even though he has suffered from a reecurring ineptitude in the first half of the season (actually, going back to the last season) Looks like he plans on adding insult to our injury.
