Shutdown Corner - NFL

Aside from the Lambeau boos, and the overcooked storylines, and the "Man O' the People, coming off his tractor to save the NFL" garbage, there was a game to play in Green Bay, and it had some pretty serious division ramifications. Early on, it looked like the Packers forgot about that -- Brett Favre(notes) carved up their pressure-proof defense, and Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers(notes) was sacked four times in the first half alone. The Vikings and their Mississippi Queen went to the visitors' locker room at halftime with a 17-3 lead, and pumped it up to 24-3 early in the third quarter when Favre threw his second touchdown pass of the day to Percy Harvin(notes). It looked as if the Pack were going to be overwhelmed by the enormity of the situation.

But Green Bay scored the next 17 points unanswered, as adjustments were made to the protection schemes in order to keep Rodgers upright, and the defense got stronger, and Rodgers started hitting his targets. Greg Jennings(notes) and Donald Driver(notes) combined for 14 catches and 147 yards, and the Pack got within five points late in the fourth quarter, 31-26, after missing a two-point conversion. Favre's Vikings went six-and-out on their next drive, and Green Bay had a chance to pull it out. Didn't happen, Even when Rodgers completed a long pass to Donald Driver under extreme duress and was gifted with an extra 15 yards courtesy of Ray Edwards'(notes) roughing-the-passer penalty with 7:33 left in the game, the home team couldn't capitalize. A sack, an incomplete pass, and a missed field goal followed.

Then, the Vikings proved that they simply had more talent on their roster with their final scoring drive. A quick screen to Adrian Peterson netted 44 yards, down to the Green Bay 15, as no Packers defender had an answer for Peterson's downfield motion. Two plays later, Favre hit Bernard Berrian(notes) for the touchdown that put the game out of reach at 38-26. Rodgers followed with a series of desperate incompletions, and it was over.

Quite simply, the Packers aren't in the Vikings' league. They have major issues along their offensive line, they are incapable of putting together a consistent running game, and their defense, while occasionally dynamic, can be burned by speed and sheer physical talent in a way that elite defenses aren't. It may not seem faithful to the Green Bay faithful that Favre could manipulate the situation and wind up on a ready-made team, but there are more important things to worry about. The Packers have some work to do through the season, and into the offseason, before they can challenge this Vikings team.

Who is Doug Farrar? That's right a nobody. Who cares what he writes. The fact is, Vikings earned their win but the Pack is young. Queens can have this year though the Steelers showed the league how to beat them. Packers will be a contender for years to come because they are young. The vikings however, what are they going to do next year?....

    LOL Bitter much?
Were you one of those guys that before the season was saying how Brett was done, he should not come back, that what you saw in the last 5 games with the Jets last year was going to be what Minnesota bought this year?
Alot of you media folks have egg on your faces, now you want to call Favre names and say he went to a ready made team?
Get a clue, and get some new material and give the man his dues...he is making every throw needed and not turning the ball over...enough said.
If the Vikings get their defense straightened out, they are SB bound...

The Pack is a young and developing team. They played with heart today and made it a game against a stout defense and an offense with multiple weapons, however, Harvin's kick returns made it tough to defend a short field. The Vikings offense with Peterson and an experienced quarterback brings a very real opportunity for the Vikings to go far into the playoffs......however, be prepared as the Vikes and Brett both have a tendency to blow it when it counts........by the way, unless there is a major injury - I KNOW Rodgers will be back with Green Bay @ Q.B. next year (I know, I know - but I couldn't resist)........

#7, Marie: "Farve is going to race the vikings to a 17-1 record and wipe out everyone in the post season and get to the superbowl and blow some team like the steelers or some other bad team"
Wow, really? First of all, it's spelled Favre, not Farve. Secondly, the Vikings won't finish 17-1. They're good, but not that good. Next, that "bad" Steeler team just handed Minnesota a loss last week.
The Vikings are a good team. They beat the Packers, unfortunately, and are likely to win the division. However, that is no reason to go overboard (i.e. thinking that the Vikings will breeze through the rest of their season) as you did on your comment.
    Go Packers!

packer fans have become so bitter over the years. a couple years ago when brett farve retired for the first time, he wanted to be the packers starting qb still. the packers basically spat in his face and said aaron rodgers is the future of this franchise. since then, brett has played with the jets and now the vikings where he is having a career year. i watched the game on tv and i saw signs that said "brett farve is a trader." when i saw those signs i laughed because in the end, the packers were the traders and there best chance at winning a super bowl slip away. who's laughing now? every vikings fan known to man is cracking up because they know that they have the best football in the nfl

Brett loves the game and plays it well. It is great to watch him in action no matter what color #4 he wears. He doesn't deserve all the negative vibes.

what comeback? All i saw was a team with an unproven qb trying once again to prove itself agaiinst a proven competitor. but that is just my opinion. and when the patriots aren't spying on people they aren't as good either.

I am so sick and tired of this comparision of the Vikes and the 96 Packers. Some stupid writer in yahoo wrote that maybe the vikes are better than the 96 packers. Is this a friggin joke? The Vikes are not even the best team in the NFC. #1 offense #1 defense the vikes do not have. the 96 Packers dominated most of the teams it played. The vikings do not do that.

I'm excited for next year when Brett retires after another Ring and the Vikes pick up Vick and show the rest of the NFL what happens when the most athletic QB ever hands-off (or doesn't) to the most athletic RB ever...
3 years from now, the media will be discussing "this MN team, as good as any that has ever existed in the NFL".
    Now there's a prediction.

#7 the Vikings with Favre, Tarkenton, McMann, Wilson, or any quarterback are incapable of winning a super bowl against any team let alone the Steelers. The Vikings beating the Steelers in a super bowl, incredibly ludicrous. It didn't happen in 77 and it won't happen in 10.

I am a Chcago Bears fan but I admire the playing ability of Bret and wish he played for the Bears. Bret still plays the game well and the Packers fans should be angey at managaement, they are the ones who gave Bret his walking papers. Let it go Packers fans and give Bret the respect you gave him when he was your quarerback. I do however hope Bret has a bad game on atleast one f the meetings with the Bears
