Sunday Spotlight: Green Bay's defense

When the Packers lost, 30-23, to the Vikings on October 5 in Minnesota, part of the problem was a defensive game plan that was close to downright timid. Dom Capers' defense focused on spying Adrian Peterson with its inside linebackers, and covering the flats and seams as opposed to blitzing Brett Favre(notes). Favre was not sacked once in the game, and defensive end Aaron Kampman(notes) was the only Green Bay defender to record a single quarterback hit. Favre predictably carved the Green Bay defense up, completing 24 passes in 31 attempts for 271 yards and three touchdowns.

Last week, the Pittsburgh Steelers -- owners of another 3-4 defense with great talent -- did to Favre what they do to just about every quarterback they face: Bring pressure from the perimeter and force the quarterback to adjust. Favre was sacked four times, completed only 33 passes in 50 attempts, threw no touchdowns and a pick, lost a fumble, and looked very much like a quarterback who could be flustered by pressure.

The Packers have only 12 sacks on the season -- compare that to Minnesota's league-leading 25 -- but they're fourth in quarterback rating allowed (64.7) and second in Pass Defense DVOA (first overall in Defensive DVOA). Green Bay doesn't have to back the dogs off Favre in an attempt to focus on Peterson, who gained 55 yards on 25 carries in the last meeting. Perhaps it's more about using their defenders differently. Rookie linebacker Clay Matthews(notes) is still adjusting to his role as an edge-rusher in a 3-4, but he has unusual speed and agility for a guy his size. Why not put Matthews over the middle and have him spy Peterson, and drop back in some zone blitzes, instead of being negated off the edge? When these two teams last played, Matthews caused a second-quarter Peterson fumble, which he then returned for a 42-yard touchdown.

There's no defensive scheme that Favre hasn't seen in his career, but that doesn't mean he can't be upended by a few interesting looks. Emotions will obviously be high in Lambeau, and ol' #4 has a history of using emotion to his advantage. The Packers must upend Favre's reunion tour if they hope to avoid a season sweep.

It'll be interesting to see if Packer fans handle Favre's return with class or boos.

Favre accomplished alot of great things in GB. Now he is the enemy playing for a much hated rival so he should be booed like every other rival player. It has nothing to do with class. He is the enemy!!

No dog in this fight, but I hope to see this game. The old-time Packers hate Favre in purple (Fuzzy Thurston called him a traitor), and even his old teammates are shaking their heads.
Boo him, jeer him, ignore him, cheer when he gets sacked............if it makes you feel better, Cheeseheads, go for it. But what ya gonna do if the Vikings win?

I think packer fans need to grow up ! your owners are the one who ran brett farve out of town not minnesota ! if your owners and coachs are that stupid than your team deserves the can of whoop ass that the vikings will open up on your team ! i have been a viking fan for over 30 years and i can tell you we were never stupid enough to get rid of Fran Tarketon ! Hey Greenbay to bad God didnt put BRAINS in your HEAD instead of CHEESE ! stupidest mistake ever made by an NFL team ! OH well, will enjoy Having Brett Farve wearing purple for the next two years maybe will even get lucky and win us a SuperBowl ! but if not

That 3-4 defense the last time around looked pretty clueless. I hope they use the same approach this game. But if they don't, All Day will make the Pack look silly.

Completed ONLY 33 passes???!!!! I've figured out you don't like Brett Favre, but what a dumb comment. You have also slanted your coverage of the Steelers game until I don't recognize it as the game I watched from start to finish. Everyone gets it - the game is big - now let's just shut up (sportswriters) and play the game. Sheesh!

Hey Viking fanatic777. Does anyone have to remind you that the biggest blunder in modern NFL history was the Vikings handing Dallas multiple 1st rounders plus to get a washed up Herschel Walker. Oh yeah, the Cowboys went on to win how many Superbowls after that? Also, what is with the Vikings not selling out every game in that monster metro area? Why do you not play outdoors like you used to? Can you say panty waist...

Ran Favre out of town? After he announced he was going to retire? Sure, ok. Whatever makes you feel better in your little fantasy world.
The Packers had a new QB in Aaron Rodgers and they were trying to rebuild the team around him - but wait! Favre UN-retires, so the Packers should just scrap their plans for the future at Favre's whim? OK. The man was selfish to an unbelievable degree, and Green Bay management decided to go with the future of the team instead of getting waltzed around by the willy from a man who didn't have the sense to retire gracefully. I loved Favre when he was with Green Bay, but enough is enough! He wanted to put himself ahead of the future of the team, and management did the right thing.

I'm a Packers Fan but You All sound like idiots except Mr. Disappointed, Brett got wishy washy and the Management had to decide to bow to one player, or look out for the whole organization. They made the right choice, I wish Brett well, I still like to watch him, but I hope the Packers' fans show a little class and not take it so personally. I think the day will come when he really regrets some of his decisions, until then... GO Pack GO!

Yeah Bill. Woodson is getting old...and Favre's just a kid???? By the way, Favre retired. He didn't get run out of town. And before you say Packers fans are classless if they boo when Brett comes on the field, remember that he comes on the field with a whole lot of other purple jerseys. It's not all about Brett. It's about the Vikings. Brett is part of a TEAM and the Packers and Vikings rivalry has been going on for a long long time.

How many championships do the vikings have? The Packers have 12. Sit down and shut up losers. I don't want to even hear about an average QB named Fran Tarkenton. What is he remembered for? Favre will always be remembered as a Packer and he will still retire as a Packer. Enjoy him while you got him, we had him for 16 great seasons. Now just as the vikings fans used to do, we get to cheer against Favre and watch our team win.
