Sunday Spotlight: Covering Dallas Clark

In his last four games against the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts tight end Dallas Clark(notes) has pulled in 14 receptions for 257 yards. Clark, who leads all tight ends with 60 catches his season, matched that 14-catch total against the Houston Texans last week when Houston used bracket coverage to deal with Indy's receivers, leaving Clark to abuse talented rookie linebacker Brian Cushing(notes) over the middle. Against the Patriots last year, the Colts lined Clark up at or near the line of scrimmage, hoping for matchups in which linebackers could be put on a string by Peyton Manning's(notes) ability to manipulate with play action. Clark picked up four catches for 63 yards in the Colts' 18-15 win. This year, Manning will be looking more to Clark to make plays, and Clark is clearly qualified to do so. The question is, how will the Pats respond?

Of those four prior games against New England, Clark's only statistical standout came in the 2006 AFC Championship game, which safety Rodney Harrison(notes) missed with a knee injury. Clark caught six passes for 137 yards in the game that finally game the Colts a one-up on their great rivals. Harrison was matched up against Clark in each of the other three games, and Clark totaled eight receptions for 120 yards. Clearly, with Harrison retired, the Pats will have to find a favorable safety coverage scheme to counter Clark.

Fortunately, they have one in the person of Brandon McGowan(notes). The fifth-year player and former Chicago Bear is impressing in his first season with the Pats, especially against marquee tight ends. When he covered Atlanta's Tony Gonzalez(notes), the future Hall-of-Famer caught one pass for 16 yards. When matched up with Tampa Bay's Kellen Winslow(notes), Winslow caught two passes for nine yards. He's the main reason New England is giving up only 5.9 catches, and 35.9 yards per game against tight ends. Whether the Colts release Clark into more of a flex role or keep him inside, this will be McGowan's toughest test to date. When asked about Clark this week, Bill Belichick acknowledged the challenge.

"Tight ends are usually hard to match up against: the (defensive backs) don't have the size and the linebackers can't usually match their speed and quickness. Clark runs well; he runs like he's a receiver. When he gets down the field, he's a vertical guy, but he has good quickness and can win underneath."

If McGowan can keep with Clark and prevent Manning from using his absence up top as an excuse to exploit other defenders with the deep pass, the Patriots will take a big step forward to winning this always-compelling game.

As a Colts fan, even if we do beat the Pats, I won't be impressed until I see the Colts don't break up and crumble in the playoffs.

You're a hard man to please Anton. 2006 champs. No losses so far. 9 playoff appearances in 10 years. As a Texans fan, what's that like?

I'm going to agree with Anton. Getting first round byes, and being favored to win playoff games does nothing for us, when we go one and out. Yes we won a SB in the last 20 years. Yes the Manning years have, except for two times, been excellent. But we have to watch our team lose that first playoff game lately and let the Steelers and Pats win 5 of the last 8. I would be much happier with winning a playoff game every other year, instead of the one and outs of late.

#4 - there is a difference between your cult-like delusions and reality. The fact is that the Colts have 9 straight playoff appearances and only one title. The impressive season winnings is meaningless when you look at how the Colts unravel in the playoffs. This should be a battle of dynasties between the Pats, Colts, and Steelers from the AFC standpoint.

Manning is the greatest quarterback to ever play football. Sometimes on Sundays, I sit back in awe as I wonder whether Touchdown Jesus himself has come down from the heavens in disguise to wear the #18 jersey. Luckily, I have HDTV and can see that Manning is missing Jesus' long, shiny hair...but then again, it's Jesus we're talking about--that could just be one hell of a mask.

Hey DAC your a genius, all the experts agree with you. Wait a min, is screwed up. Actually one of the greatest and I do mean greatest QBs that ever graced the NFL field said this about Payton. If he is not the greatest of all time, when he is done he will own every record for a QB in the NFL. Pretty strong statement coming from Dan the man!
I respect Tom Brady, he is a great QB in a great system, with a great coach. I think he is a bit of a whiner but that does not take away from the fact that he is a great QB. Please respect the game and don't talk trash about something you really don't know anything about. It just shows your Ignorance.

I'm a die hard Texans fan and hate the Colts with every bone in my body. I cannot wait for Manning to retire, but I have to admit that he is the best I've ever seen. I'm 41 and have seen Elway, Montana, Marino, Young, Aikmen, Moon and Brady. He's the best, besides Matt Shaubb.

Im a die hard Patriots fan, but after tonight I have no clue what they were thinking! A little over 2 minutes left in the game with the lead and you go for it on 4th and 2 on your own 28. Is it just me or is that the dumbest decision that has been made in history. Pee Wee league coaches have more sense then that!

Obviously, the Colts do not need help from an opposing coach to win a game! Belichick should be fired immediately. There was a blog comment as to which is the best quarterback, P. Manning or T. Brady and the consensus was Manning. If New England's o-line would learn to hold, and get away with it, like the Colts, I think you would find Brady to be the best ever!
