Steve McNair used to be a beast

Given his injury-plagued and not-always-stellar play with the Ravens over the past couple of seasons, it's easy to forget how good Steve McNair once was. Given his retirement announcement today, it seems like a good time to remember.

Five or six years ago, McNair was about the scariest thing in the NFL. He was prototypical in how he played the game, bringing every quality you could want in a quarterback. He was big, mobile, accurate, intelligent, and played through any injury you could imagine. You could've sawed the guy's right leg off in the 2nd quarter, and he'd be back after halftime with a prosthetic that he crafted out of a piece of the field goal post.

But he was also physically fearsome. In his prime, he was almost impossible to sack, and he made a ton of plays that a slower or smaller quarterback just couldn't have made. He had ridiculous athleticism, but it never come at the expense of being a pure quarterback.

In 2003, his co-MVP season, he threw for over 3,200 yards, 24 touchdowns, and had just 7 interceptions. And this was a guy whose value could never be wholly measured by stats. He just made plays.

When people remember Super Bowl XXXIV, they remember the last play, where Kevin Dyson came up just a yard short of the endzone. But right before that, McNair made one of those amazing, but typical-of-him plays that kept the Titans alive and put them in position to score.

The retirement papers haven't been officially filed yet. McNair's departure from the Titans two years ago was somewhat acrimonious, so I don't know if it's something he'd want, but I agree with the gang at Music City Miracles. I'd like to see him sign a one-day contract with Tennessee, and retire as a Titan.

well first i would like to say thank you MJD for writing an actual article and not some tabloid junk. Secondly i'd like to say that McNaire is a legend in his own right. He did things that were just unreal. amazing how he carried that Titans team the way he did. Whats sad is that the Titans didnt exactly give me extra help and they betrayed him. Its really a shame how the Titans released him and the way they did it. And i personally think that the Titans are going to do Vince Young the same way.

2:00 into that Super Bowl video - probably the greatest play NOT to win a SuperBowl. Then ending of that game still hurts. Alright Vince Young, you've got a lot to live up to - you've already got the "always injured" part down, but you need to work on the rest, like the MVP's and SuperBowl.

You're welcome. But we'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming of tabloid junk very soon.

mcnair is simply what a real qb should be, smart, focused, and a warrior. he plays and lives as a example of what the term "the man" should be in life and sports. a hall of famer for sure.

Wow, I had forgotten about that one!
It was tough as a Ravens hater in Baltimore to root for Steve McNair, but I did it anyway. It was sad to watch him last year, so I'm glad he's not trying to hang on forever. His numbers won't get him into the Hall in this era, but he was a hell of a QB.

That final drive of that Super Bowl was pretty amazing by Mcnair even though it didn't end the way he wanted, he made a hell of an effort. This is coming from a Rams fan, when he shook off Kevin Carter like he was a five year old jumping on his back, you knew that he was something special.

McNair may have never one a super bowl. Yet he displayed alot of grit. McNair represents what the NFL wants to sell. He is a leader not a whiner. I never heard any bad press about him. He should be recognized as not only a warrior but a role model.

Just look at the teams he played for. None of them were that good, offensively. You don't see the big number on the guy because he understood his offense's role. I put him in the Hall of Fame if I'm voting. The guy (in his prime) is the kind of QB we all want for our team, unless of course you can have Tom or Payton. Two guys with an empty booth in Canton waiting for them already. People occasionally use the topic 'black quarterbacks' well he was the best. If you ask me. I could have had a 50-60 quarterback rating on Moon's Oilers. Due to his wide receivers and powerbacks.

One of the greatest ever...he needs to be in HOF. There will never be a better tandem then Eddie George and Steve McNair.

Whoever said he didnt have good offense is crazy. He had eddie George, Frank Wycheck, Kevin Dyson and Derrick Mason. They were one of the best and matched Peytons crew almost all of the new millenium. Im just hearing about this retirement and its hard for me not to think about the many times I have watched Steve win games when Eddie wasnt doing it on his own time. Forever will be one of the greatest and he is just as noble and strong as Brett Favre. TAKE THAT TO THE BANK!
He may not have the records or the wins or the ring, but he has the same heart and I put McNair in the HOF maybe not the first time he is on the ballot but he will get there.

I have always wondered why he was never labeled as injury prone. It always seemed like some part of him was hurt. As for the HOF, while he was a very good player, I do not think he he is worthy of the hall. HIs numbers and play were excellent, but not that top tier level. A lot of his stats are padded and his poor play the last few years really hirt his chances.

The only thing I can say about McNair is that next to Brady and the Patriots, he scared me more than any other QB and team that the Colts faced. In his prime he could find a way to beat just about anybody. It's a shame that he's finishing his career out of Tennessee and that his last few years have been less than stellar. But thanks for the memories, Steve and good luck and best wishes for the rest of your life.

I respect the heck out Steve McNair. He's one of the toughest SOBs I've ever seen. He is making the right decision, maybe a couple of years too late. Go G-Men!

They brought great heart, indomitable will, fierce competitor spirit, and are gracious gentlemen. The NFL needs more Favre's and McNair's not more Adam Jones's.
