Shutdown Corner - NFL

Brady Quinn(notes), owner of a career 65.8 quarterback rating and all-around handsome devil, is a safe bet to win the Browns starting quarterback job, according to a league source quoted in Tony Grossi's Browns blog at the Cleveland Plain Dealer. A snippet:

I recently spoke with someone I will identify as a league source. This person does not work for an NFL team but works with NFL teams and has a prominent name.

I asked, "Whom do you think will wind up starting at quarterback for the Browns?"

Without hesitation, the answer was, "Brady Quinn."

The person went on to say that the Browns had two "very substantial" trade offers for Quinn -- each involved a No. 1 draft pick -- and declined to trade him.

Since the source is unnamed, you can put as much stock in that as you'd like, though I do find the rumors of the rejected trade offers interesting. Quinn's name was out there a lot this offseason, especially in connection with attempted-but-failed three-way deals involving Jay Cutler(notes). So I don't find those claims difficult to believe.

It still seems like a bit of a raw deal for Derek Anderson(notes), though. People forget that he's still just 25 years old, and unlike Quinn, he's actually proven that he can play at a high level in the NFL, even if it was just for part of a season. He's awfully young and has an awful lot of upside to be glued to the bench even before training camp starts.

Gracias, The Huddle.

Yes I Believe Quinn will be the starter & DA will be gone as soon as someone's starting QB goes down. And draft picks will be gained.!

Quinn should be the starter if we are rebuilding. We wasted 2 #1 picks on the guy lets see what he is made of. We might have won 5 games last year if he would have played in all of them. LOL
    GO BROWNS!!!!!!
Edwards to the JETS for Thomas Jones and a 3rd round pick. OH YA :)

MJD, you don't know what you are talking about. Anderson proved he can play against weak defenses, that's all. Though I hope there are some GM's who are as deluded as you who think DA can play QB in the NFL. Perhaps the Browns can get something substantial for him.

Cleveland is using Brady for his marketablilty...I mean because of him Cleveland Browns got some exposure in a Subway commercial...why hasnt he played yet, cuz clearly he is just a decent qb at best.

Anderson prevented more wins than he, himself actually pulled our for the Browns. In fact it was his dismal play against a down and out Bengals in December 2007 that eliminated the Browns from the Playoffs. Trade DA to the Jets for a few more guys and let's move forward with Brady.

The mistake by the lake Browns have no clue .
Thats why they dont win.....Keep both the QBs and then they might have something down the road,If they werent in the division they are in they might make the playoffs once in awhile.Maybe if they went to the nfc west they make the playoffs thats a weak division.

    I agree,we should play Brady .
If he plays we will soon find out if he's "AS GOOD AS ADVERTISED".
He can only run the plays he's given ,and also with the players he has to work with.
Even "Big Ben" would have looked bad behind our offensive OFFENSIVE line. LOL !
    "GO BROWNS !!"

Quinn should and will be the starter. Its his turn for a shot. Its not that I dont like DA, but in all honesty he can not play in Cleveland. Its unfortunate but he was cheered by some Browns fans when he went down which will always be in his head. I Love my Browns, and it needs to be Quinn. I think DA would be great for a team like the Vikings. great running game, Dome team that he can use that big arm off play action. Quinn is exactly what we need as a browns QB. A smart leader that can control the game. In the AFC North the weather gets bad so that big arm DA has doesnt matter. it has been said by many browns players that Quinn is a leader in the huddle. He has waited his turn said, and donr all the right things. Quinn is the starter.

Post 18---- How wrong are you. Look at the team Quinn had at ND. he carried that team alone, and had them in BSC games himself. Quinn could only do so much there, and look at his numbers. Look at his record, and look at what he had to work with. Now also look at where they are without him. Some people just want to hate to hate.

I have no clue why everyone is on Brady Quinns jock strap he has not done one thing in the league!!! Da has at least proven he can make the throws if someone would catch em and he has enough time to throw the stinking ball!! There is no way I start Brady over Da period!!!

The reason it took so long for Quinn to play was #1his holdout. #2 DA played great went to a probowl. #3 Savage gave DA a big contract when he should have traded him. He couldnt say he was wrong and play Quinn after signing DA to that contract. It didnt matter what Quinn did they were not paying him much so he could sit.

If Brady Quinn is such a bad QB...Then why were all these teams willing to make deals with the Browns to get him?? Two teams were willing to offer 1st rounders and more. But, DA the best we could get was a 3rd rounder and 5th round pick.
**Having a big arm in today's NFL is not what it use to be. About 80% of the pass plays are under 20 yards. A big arm is only good for a Hail Mary.
****Brady is smart, accurate, good leader, he can scramble and he is a winner.

cfields---Did you see DA play the last 3or 4 games of 07? How about the first 4-5 games of 08. No one says Quinn is the best QB ever, but I want to know if he is or is not great. We know what we have in DA. Trade Quinn and he goes to be a great QB before we give him a shot. Then what? You would say. Why did we trade him. I hate lerner.

bq is the brain, and da is the braun. quinn moves through his progressions....just watch his eyes...but lacks some physical skills. da locks on to one receiver and cannons the ball wether open or not. if the browns could put together a respectable running game, da is the man using play action and receivers who actually run accurate routes. which is why he was a pro bolwer in 2007.

When teams had a change to game plan for DA he didnt do anything. Quinn looked great until he hurt his finger. Even then he still tried to play with a hurth finger. Thats a leader in my book. A tough one. Then Winslow comes out and says he doesnt understand why Quinn isnt the starter. Thats coming from a Probowl TE that has no ties with the team. Obviously he sees something.
