Straight
to hell, as far as I'm concerned! WHOOOOOO! I don't care what he does, he can
pump gas, bag groceries, or be the greeter at Wal-Mart, as long as he doesn't
mind getting punched in face 842 times a day! WHOOOOO! Maybe him, Mike Williams
and Charles Rogers can start a company called, "We Suck at Everything,
Inc."! It's a great day, baby! You feel the love?! We're breakin' out the
Cristal tonight, playa!
I'm sorry. A Lions fan clubbed me over the head and took over my keyboard for a second. But I've subdued him, and we can proceed normally now.
Once upon a time, Matt Millen was a very good linebacker, and after that, Matt Millen was a pretty good broadcaster. Seriously. He called games for FOX and was their number two guy behind John Madden. Had he stayed in that position, he might be the top analyst on FOX right now.
I wonder, though, if it might be impossible for him to step back into that career, given his status as a national symbol of incompetence. His tenure as general manager of the Lions was such a colossal failure that it might be difficult for anyone to take him seriously now.
I'm not saying that's fair, but that's the way it'll be. What would stop any fan from disregarding anything Millen says, and pointing to his record with the Lions as justification? Any player he ever criticized could say, "You're going to listen to that guy? He went 31-84 in Detroit." I'm afraid that any credibility he once had as an authority on football may now be shredded.
And that's a shame. Because the truth is that Matt Millen forgets more about football every morning than I'll know in my entire life.
Some guys just can't make that knowledge translate, though. As an example, I know guys who are diehard football fans, watch a ton of ball on Sundays, read about it constantly on the web, watch SportsCenter, watch the NFL network, etc., and they're still awful, awful fantasy football players. I'm not comparing actual football to fantasy football, of course, just illustrating a point about how sometimes, a wealth of knowledge doesn't translate into practical success.
Michael Jordan, a brilliant basketball player, wasn't a very good GM with the Wizards. Nick Faldo, a brilliant golfer, wasn't a very good Ryder Cup captain. Things like that happen all the time.
Millen is, despite the crimes he committed against the Detroit Lions, a football guy. And he'll land on his feet somewhere, be it as a broadcaster or in some capacity with an NFL team. And if it's your team, as long as Millen's position is something other than general manager, I don't think there's any reason for you to be afraid.

That said. Don't expect any immediate improvement. It is going to take years to clean up this mess, much like a toxic super fund site.
However, removing that tumor is a great first step.

Should have been fired after his second season because he might have play football but when you no front office experience because he should have never gotten the job.

Roy will not be re-signed next year because its Calvin's team now and Kitna may do better with a new team because he's a veteran career back-up. I like Stanton because I am a Sparty but with the Rams putting Bulger on the bench because he's still young enough to be around for a couple of years.
