Shutdown Corner - NFL

I know where I stand. And I know where a lot of people stood as of noon on Sunday. But what about right now, the morning of Tuesday, October 14th? Do we still have a large contingent of "Eli is better than Peyton" believers?

If you are one such believer -- and last week, it was all the rage -- maybe you feel like it'd be shortsighted to change your mind back to Peyton after this one particular weekend of football.

Peyton had 3 touchdowns and a 134.7 passer rating against the best passing defense in football, and Eli had 3 interceptions and a 57.1 passer rating against the Cleveland Browns. But so what, it's just one game, right?

Okay. So let's forget about that one game. And yes, I realize that it's easy to write a rebuttal to that counterpoint after this weekend's events, but if it makes you feel any better, I'll be happy to ignore this week when making my case.

If it's shortsighted to draw or change an opinion after this one week, I'd counter that it was way more shortsighted to ignore the last 10 years of Peyton Manning's career in favor of Eli Manning's last, what, 10 games or so? Peyton's quarterback rating has been below 84.1 for an entire season exactly once in his career: when he had a 71.2 rating as a rookie.

Meanwhile, Eli's quarterback year-long rating has never climbed out of the 70s. It likely will this year, but even last year, when he won the Super Bowl, it was a meager 73.9. Peyton didn't win any hardware last year, but he did manage to post a 98.0 rating.

True, through six weeks of the 2008 campaign, the numbers are a bit different. Eli, after last night's regression, is carrying a 91.4 rating to Peyton's 87.8, an advantage I'd describe as extremely slight. But an advantage nonetheless, I suppose.

But let's not confuse the Giants' success with Eli's proficiency, and let's not confuse the Colts weak start with any declining skills in Peyton Manning. Let's not ignore circumstance here.

Statistically, Eli has the NFL's best running to lean on and to open up the passing game. Peyton's running game? Dead last. There's also the issue of the Colts injuries along the offensive line, and let's not forget that Peyton had a scalpel bouncing around in his knee twice this offseason. I think he can be excused if it takes him a few games to find his mojo.

But really, none of that matters, either. Here's the only relevant question: If you had to win a game tomorrow, and you had to pick one quarterback to do it, are you taking Peyton or Eli?

Do you really believe Eli is as good at Peyton at doing all the crafty veteran things that a quarterback's expected to do? Pre-snap reads, setting up a corner, recognizing coverages, immediately recognizing the open guy ... is Eli on Peyton's level there?

I say no, and I say it so emphatically that even Jerramy Stevens would understand. No. No! No! NO! Maybe Eli's got some youthful advantages in quickness and footspeed, and maybe even arm strength. But Peyton's still got a cannon, and he's still damn hard to sack. And I'll be surprised if Peyton isn't statistically the best quarterback at the end of the season.

As a Jag fan, I have the displeasure of watching Peyton whip our secondary twice a year. He is in my opinion still better than Eli, who is still becoming great, but has a way to go to ellipse his older brother.

all i know is who i would pick on my fantasy team would be completely different than the guy i'd want to have a beer with.
peyton's the better player, sure, but he's really unlikeable, to a point where i'm turned off products he endorses. eli would never mistake himself as the star of the giants, and i like that about him - he knows he's just one part of a complete team.
stats is one thing, but personality sells. and peyton manning is a pretentious tit.

    MJD,
You, sir, have just gotten me in trouble in class. I burst out laughing when I read the Jerramy Stevens line. Way to go.
Also, while I have you, I think you are the direct cause of the internal hemorrhaging I have going on right now. It's from holding in a laugh upon reading your nickname for Eli Manning on your old site. Thanks.

As a Giants fan, I'm slightly biased, but here's how I see it. To win a random regular season game, or to start on my fantasy team, I pick Peyton 10 times out of 10. If we're talking about a big game, for whatever reason I pick Eli. And that stretches back farther than last season. Ever since the Denver game of Eli's second season, he's had a knack for the late comeback and not getting flustered by the situation. Meanwhile, Peyton has shrunk from the spotlight more than once or twice.

Last year, in his "breakout year," Eli completed 56.1% of his passes, threw for 208.5 yards per game, averaged 6.3 yards per attempt, threw for 23 TDs, had 20 interceptions and 13 fumbles. His quarterback rating was 25th in the NFL. He is not a an elite quarterback.
He had a very good run in the playoffs last year, but outside of that he has not great.

I always figured the Colts were struggling cause Peyton missed the entire preseason and had surgery. I figured they'd get it together eventually. I still think Eli's a good quarterback.

Ya Eli is a good QB but he lost all of his composer last night against Clevend, saying that Peyton shrunk from the spotlight is ridiculus. Peyton is the most skilled and prolific QB in the 4th quarter. Peyton is a hall of fame QB and has knowledge that surpasses ELi ten fold. I am a colts fan so call bias, but really! Peyton vs. Eli, it is an easy choice. However both have super bowl rings and an MVP trophy so only time will tell who is the better brother. As of right now its Peyton.

I think all these Yahoo sports bloggers are full of crap this year. They do nothing but make issues out of things that are not really issues. Does it matter who is the better Manning? This whole thing is to make an argument for argument's sake.
Being a Colts fan, I definitely think Peyton is better. I am positive Giants fans will pick Eli. The only real indication of which is better came from the ONE game that they played each other and the Colts won.
Let's get some better things out here to talk about...like if Tony Romo's broken pinky is going to hurt his relationshop with Jessica Simpson.

steelydan, i agree, and i think what it is is there's an all-time high interest in the nfl and fantasy football and hardly anything to write about. so everywhere you look online, it's just more filler.

I don't have any doubt that Peyton is the better quarterback right now both statistic wise and just overall...He has experience, he has dealt with adversity, he has a better work ethic, studies game film all the time, broke Dan Marino's touchdown record without Randy Moss on the team, Eli is a good quarterback, and will be a great one possibly one day...but in my opinion right now it's that Giant defense carrying them..I would't take Anderson over Eli but Drew Brees, Tony Romo, Donovan McNabb, maybe even Philip Rivers his rival draft pick...no I have Eli down just above some other over-rated guys like Carson Palmer, Aaron Rodgers, David Garrard...if Eli is going to outquarterback his brother Peyton he has a long way to go last nights Browns game just proves that....

How about this arguement...If it wasn't for "the drunk kicker" missing a field goal against Pittsburg, and that damn Belichick defense, Peyton could have four maybe five Super Bowl rings by now?? Any debaters?

How can anyone get the best of something that's not present.....just had to exhale....Handsdown Peyton is a better QB than Eli

Is there even a question?! Peyton is still the best QB in the league, he plays against the best teams in the league and puts up stellar numbers every single year. Eli is coming into his own, but he's not the guy you want calling plays at the line and taking your team down field with 2 minutes left. He had an amazing drive against the Pat's, but it's only amazing because we all knew he played out of his mind and ability. Peyton has about 4 drives like that a year...on accident.

    Like MJD said,
If you have one drive. Its the fourth quarter and you're down by 4 points there's 1:45 left on the clock, who do you want out there?
Peyton? or Eli? For me there is no question, no debate, nothing that would make me want Eli more than Peyton. Not even Eli's age would make me want him more than Peyton. I believe that I still have a good 4-5 years before the Colts are irrelavant again, simply because of Peyton Manning. Cut Eli tomorrow and there are 20 other guys that could fill in tomorrow and do it just as well.
There's only one guy that could step into Peyton's spot and play the same or better, and his knee is filled with stitches right now.

To me, you just have to be a person who watches football to know the answer to this question. Stats and accomplishments aside, no one who has seen both brothers play several games would even consider that Eli is better than Peyton. Easterbrook is fun to read, but he was just stretching for something controversial to say when he wrote that article. #18 has it right that the only active QB who belongs in the conversation with Peyton is Brady.

I believe Peyton to be the best quarterback in the NFL. I have watched him from his college days at Tennessee to his whole career with the Colts. Of course, I may be biased since Indianapolis is my favorite team. Peyton can call audibles and read defences better than any of the other QB's in the NFL. And he is great when trailing in the 4th quarter. I mean, for real, how likely is it that a QB can win a game by throwing 3 TD's with five minutes left in the game to come out with a win? Peyton did and I've seen him do it many times. Not to take anything away from Eli, he is also an excellent QB, but not quite Peyton yet. I do believe that eventually Eli will become as good as Peyton, but not better. I mean look who their father is, right?

to even compare a 2 time league mvp wid beyond hall of fame numbers to a guy who just won a by playing 4 solid games consecutively is a stupid argument here. Eli's D was just amazing which helped him win those games by jus being above mediocre. Nevertheless Eli has improved tremendously from his awful years as a starting QB but come on realistically anyone in a straight mind would pick Peyton over Eli as the better QB. Even having this argument is a disgrace to a player like Peyton who might go down as one of the best QBs ever from this era along wid Brady. superbowl

Peyton! No one manages the clock, reads the defense of orchestrates a 2 minute drill better-Eli has had the good fortune of growing up with one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game-some of that had to rub off! Eli is good, but he will never be better than Peyton

I'm a Pats fan. It was terrible watching Eli throwing up (and winning) with a prayer in the Super Bowl and the ensuing media crush that portrayed him as being so good. Didn't he lead the league in interceptions (20) last year? Didn't Eli have a rating of 73.9 in the regular season?
The payoff was listening to the Cleveland crowd chanting what all Pats fans know--"over-rated!"
I have the utmost respect for Peyton and watching the Colts v Pats was a treat--watching two great QBs battle, but watching the Giants? Not so much.
