Shutdown Corner - NFL

The Detroit Lions playing on Thanksgiving is every bit the holiday tradition as the Macy's Day Parade, awkward dinner-time conversations and endless turkey leftovers. But the team's ineptitude has led to a growing call that Detroit should have the Thanksgiving game stripped from its schedule in favor of a better matchup for the television-viewing audience. With the Lions entering this year's game sporting an 0-11 record, the chorus will grow louder than ever. The NFL needs to ignore it. Detroit is the home of Thanksgiving football. Changing that would rob the league of one of it's best traditions.

Maybe it's my inner-Tevye, but tradition matters. There's something to be said for the fact that the Lions began the NFL Thanksgiving game in 1934. (The Cowboys didn't jump into the fray for another 32 years.) It started off as a promotional gimmick to draw interest to professional football which, at the time, lagged in popularity behind the college game. Since then, Thanksgiving football has been synonymous (for better or worse) with the Detroit Lions.

The game is still vastly popular in Detroit, selling out every year since 1992 in spite of the fact that the Lions have been pretty bad since then. They've had just seven winning seasons since 1973 and have only won one playoff win over that same stretch. (They are three games over .500 on Thanksgiving.) Even with all the football misery fans in Detroit have been subjected to, they still continue to support the Thanksgiving game. One gets the impression that Lions fans are very protective of this tradition and taking it away would cause a mini-revolt. Why alienate one loyal fan base just so you might get a better game?

And that's the reason the NFL would dump the Lions: to get a better match-up. But what are the odds that a match-up that looks good in April will be interesting come late-November? The Monday Night and Sunday Night schedules, which are supposed to feature marquee games, are littered with stinkers because teams under-perform from the previous year. It's impossible to gauge what will be a good game seven months out.

Let's say Detroit had been booted from Thanksgiving this year, maybe the NFL would have put on Colts-Browns instead; a contest which looked much better when the schedule was released. If the NFL could flex a game into the Thanksgiving spot, then maybe there'd be something to the argument of booting Detroit. But breaking a 74-year old tradition based on the hope that there might be a better game is senseless. Keep Thanksgiving football in Detroit, where it belongs.

Should Detroit continue playing on Thanksgiving every year?

As far as I'm concerned, the Lions won't be playing a game this Thanksgiving. Aren't the 0-11 Lions playing the 10-1 Titans? You call THAT a game?
    I call that a mercy-killing.

Let the Lions keep the game.
I'd rather not have to decide each year if I'd rather get fat with my family or go to a Falcons game.
    Too tough of a choice.

Ease millions of people's pain by changing the teams! Its bad enough we have to suffer through the holidays with relatives we never see for 364 days.....then we sit painfully watching Dallas and Detroit only because its our only escape from the reality of the holidays! So PLEASE change the teams and give us some partial hope for the holidays....

They should change the teams. Our family hasn't watched Thanksgiving day football in probably 10-12 years because we hate having to watch Detroit & Dallas. Detroit hasn't been competion to any team for as long as I can remember and the self proclaimed," America's team" should change their title to," Texas's team" I don't know anyone except for people from texas who like them. It isn't fair to all the others cities to be forced to watch the same team year after year. College is always the better Thanksgiving day games.

#1, I'd favor keeping Detroit instead of Dallas. An AFC team should get the 2nd coveted slot.
I'm generally in favor of a rotation - but you clinched it for me. DETROIT LIONS ARE 3 GAMES OVER .500 ON T-DAY.
Holy moly - they aren't 3 games over .500 in the last DECADE.
If we want to encourage football in Detroit, we HAVE to let them keep that game. It's not like they use it to springboard into the playoffs... ever.
I'd encourage giving the Dallas slot to an inept AFC team, in hopes of elevating them in a similar way. Perhaps the Raiders or Chiefs?

Yeah it may be hard to gauge things before the season starts, but it's a given that almost ANY game would be better to watch than a Lions game. I'm all for seeking a better matchup or at least a larger market team. I don't care about the tradition of the Lions on Thanksgiving. To me it's always been more of a tradition of football on Thanksgiving, kind of like going out and having your own backyard Turkey Bowl. Hopefully the NFL steps in and gives us something to truly be thankful for and saves us from these absolutely awful Thanksgiving games.

Anyone who knows anything about The Lions and Thanksgiving knows they will at the very least play hard for a quarter or two....Honestly watch them win tomorrow in front of NO ONE at Ford Field and finish the season 1-15....somehow, someway they will get ballyhooed out of the first pick in the draft, not take a franchise QB with the second pick and somehow end up with Brian Hoyer at Quarterback next season...jesus just move the team to LA already...

Never mind tradition...the fact is this is about money. Keep in mind that the Ford Motor Co. has been a major sponsor for a long time and the league did discuss removing the Lions a few years back (us older people remember) in favor of rotating the games through the entire league. William Clay Ford showed far more passion during that time in threatening to remove the Ford dollars than he ever has for his team or Lions fans. He is okay with 7 winning seasons over the past 35 years but you sure as hell better not screw with the dollars he makes during this tradition. Neither he or the league are willing to risk money so this is just fodder for the media and fans to speculate...the tradition will live on (at least until Ford passes on).

Yes, Barry Sanders is gone and today's team doesn't have a marque player. But I have seen some pretty good games on Thanksgiving day. I was there when the Lions beat New England in 2000. And how about that 55-20 Chicago beating in 1997. Sure, they've taken some bathes too (Colts in 04). But all-in-all, the Lions step up for this game because it usually is their only nationally televised game of the year. So, if YOUR team wants to play on Thanksgiving, they're more than welcome to come to Detroit.
