Shutdown Corner - NFL

The four winners in the trade that sends Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans for 2nd- and 5th- round draft picks.

1. Jeremy Shockey. He wanted out of New York, and he gets out of New York. And not only does he get to shed the unappreciated, not-so-fresh feeling, but he lands in a pass-happy offense with a quality quarterback (more on that in a second).

2. New York Giants Organization. They get 2nd and 5th round picks for Shockey, which, while it might not be equal value, was probably more than they thought they'd be getting.

3. Marques Colston. Finally, there's another target in the passing game to take pressure away from him. I don't mean to slight David Patten, Devery Henderson, and Lance Moore ... actually, yes, I suppose I do.

4. Drew Brees. Not only is he one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but he also loves his tight ends. In 2004 and 2005, Antonio Gates caught 170 balls for 23 touchdowns. In 2006 and 2007, from Philip Rivers, Gates caught 146 balls for 18 touchdowns.

5. Jay Glazer. I believe Glazer had the news first. He's just dominating the NFL scoop business these days.

And the three losers in the trade:

1. Eli Manning. Manning, from all accounts, really wanted Shockey to return to the Giants. And why wouldn't he? Shockey's young, extremely athletic, has great hands, and he blocks. He's a bonafide weapon, and Manning will have to do without him.

2. Kevin Boss. A lot of people last year felt like Boss was just as good a tight end as Shockey. He's not. But, fair or not, that label's been applied and the pressure's on. Good luck, Kevin.

3. Shockey's Tattoo. The big bald eagle/American flag tattoo matched so well with the Giants color scheme. Now it will clash.

As long as the Saint's don't stumble out of the gate again this year they are sure to be a power house in the NFC. Adding Shokey to that line up can only help...now they just need a power player or two on the other side of the ball.

shockey is an awesome tight end that the giants never figured out how to use properly. it's a shame he has to go, and this will only motivate him further this season. look out NFL, cuz shockey is gonna be looking to prove to everyone that he is one of the best in the game

Brees is happy now, but lets see how gleeful he is after a season with Shockey.

'Good hands?' That's probably Shockey's biggest weakness. Granted, he is hard to block and runs very well after the catch, but he's had his share of glaring drops, especially in the endzone.

B.S. - I don't think Shockey's temper will effect him like Manning. Brees doesn't seem THAT easygoing. It may work or it may not.

MJD is obviously crazy. Yes Shockey is a good tight end, but great hands? do you watch Giants games? He is a great blocker, he runs well, he is impossible to block or defend ( too fast for LB's and too big for DB's) but his hands have always been his downfall, well that and his mouth. After the G-men made the famous run to the SB - his ego was destroyed. They proved that they could win without him, and he can't take that. I always liked Shockey and I wish him the best, but get the facts straight if your gonna be a writer.

Shockey is a good player but was NEVER a good TEAM player. History has always proven that a great player can't win championships on their own. IT TAKES A TEAM. His leaving doesn't make or break the Giants. Kevin Boss is good at being a role player not one of the major players that Shockey always whined about wanting to be. Eli will be fine cause Shockey not worth the angst and pressure he put on the Giants. Let Brees have the headache now!!!!

this is a great trade, all the positives the saints clearly outlined. i see the saints making the playoffs again, not getting far with their defensive woes.

glad to see shockey go, and to say he has good hands, he has not been a staedy catcher in two seasons. His blocking suffered as well when was only thinking about getting open for a reception. A big distraction in new york has finally left..

In another year and a half, a disgruntled Shockey will be on the block again. Great potential? Yes. Great player? No. Great team player? Never.

Thanks Giants! Saints to the Super Bowl baby. To the guy that spoke of defense. The Rams showed us a offensive "Juggernaut" can win you the Super Bowl. Colston, Mecham, Arrington, and Shockey. we just need one more thing. payton to realize that bush is a wide out. with duece and p. thomas we are a "Juggernaut". Super Bowl baby.

Didn't the Giants just win a Super Bowl with him on the..........well.............was he even on the sideline? And please don't attempt to say he is anywhere near the best tight end in the game. He is a mouth that has promoted himself, and destroyed any chance he ever had of being a "team-mate". Regardless of all his talk, there are 11 players on the field at any time for his team, Offense, Defense, Special Teams, together they ALL win the game. He is an arrogant backside that needs to learn that.

Shockey's attitude forced the Giants to deal him. No one player, no matter how good, is bigger than the team. Besides, didn't the Giants win the Super Bowl without Shockey? Good luck in New Orleans Jeremy.

Not to interrupt the high-minded banter here, but two points:
1 - If the G-men were going to take a second and a fifth, why not do it at the draft? The Saints 08 picks are likely to be better than their 09 picks.
2 - This trade makes sense in a couple ways for the Giants, first they clear some cap room for the upcoming Eli, Osi, Brandon Jacobs, Plaxico (?) deals they need to be making soon and second, schematically, the Giants probably should be going to more 3-WR sets this year anyway with a bit of a positional logjam. When everyone's healthy their depth chart looks like: Plax, Toomer, the other Steve Smith, the other crappy midget Moss, Mario Manningham, Michael Jennings, Domenik Hixson, DJ Hall, Phil McConkey, Craphonso Thorpe and a cast of 1000s.

Shockey is undoubtedly one of the better TE's in the NFL, but I have serious doubts that he's getting healthier as time passes. I'm sure he's going to play hard, but that may just mean he'll get hurt faster.
