Chargers general manager A.J. Smith, displeased with the Chargers 38-28 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, called his team "soft." Sort of. Here's the quote:

“Everything is wrong with it right now. I’m not the least bit happy in a lot of areas. I’ve seen us be tough and physical to soft and bewildered.”

Now Shawne Merriman(notes) is mad at him. If I was A.J. Smith, though, I wouldn't be too worried, because from what we've seen so far this year, as long there's any sort of a warm, living body between Smith and Merriman, Merriman can't get to him. Really, any toddler would do.

Merriman got bent out of shape about the "soft" label. Here was his response, via the AP:

“I don’t know too much of that. That’s an opinion of a person, and it’s not needed,” Merriman said. “We know that we have to play better. We met for an extra hour and a half as a defense as a whole to discuss what we need to do and things we need to do to get better. And we’re going to make adjustments in this locker room as far as players and our attitudes and getting after people a little more. But all that extra (stuff) is not needed at all.” [...]

“The only opinions that matter to me are the ones in this locker room. Anything else, it doesn’t matter,” he said.

Well, it might matter. Especially since Merriman's contract is up after this year, and Smith is the one deciding whether or not Merriman gets to stay in San Diego.

There's also the small matter of Smith being right. I understand that Merriman doesn't want to hear it from anyone outside of the locker room, and that's fine, but I don't see how he's in a position to defend himself or the defense.

It's not that I blame Merriman; as he's still clearly hobbled with the knee injury and probably shouldn't even be on the field yet, but let's face it: The Chargers are giving up 25 points and 365 yards per game. They have a paltry six sacks in four games. They're giving up 4.6 yards per carry. They were pushed around by the Steelers offensive line, and they shouldn't be pushing around anybody.

You can attribute that to injuries or whatever, and that might be legit, but the bottom line is that it's not very good. If Shawne Merriman or anyone else doesn't like it, they can feel free to go out on the field and change perceptions, but until they do, "soft" is the label that A.J. Smith and everyone else will give them.

Has he had a sack since his steroid suspension? The GM's opinion, public or not, matters more than his.

I've watched all four Chargers games. I've watched their defensive line get buried. The guys are trying, but losing Jamal has really hurt. I move that they scan the horizen for something better than they've got.

    The success of the 3-4 defense (3 down linemen and 4 linebackers) is predicated on two things;
    1) Pass rush from the outside linebackers; which can be argued is at least existent (not great right now, but existent) for the Chargers defense, and
    2) A strong nose tackle that consistently ties up two offensive linemen AND pushes them into his gap (the space between the center and either guard) not allowing the opposing quarterback to step up into the pocket and avoid the rush from the outside linebackers. This also forces running backs outside on running plays and into the waiting arms of the defensive ends and linebackers. This is where the Chargers are not getting it done!
The lack of interior push by San Diego with Jamal Williams out for the season is 75% of their problem on defense, maybe more. If I'm AJ Smith, I'm packing up one of my interchangeable receivers and a 2nd round pick and talking to the Browns about Shaun Rogers, today!

The Chargers have the exact same problem as the Cowboys. A talented team, undermined by mediocre coaching. Norv Turner has had a losing record with every organization he head coached. He should've stayed an offensive coordinator.

Merimman is soft because of lack of steroids. The man is calling out AJ because he is going through success withdrawals.

I hope Merriman has invested his money wisely. I don't think GMs are going to accept "Announcers say I play with such passion!" as a reason to hand out a big contract.

Who is Shawne Merriman is he playing this year? He's garbage, so is Norv Turner. Teams take on personalities of their head coaches - right now, Chargers personality is bewildered and weak - like Norvald. Shawne Merriaman won't be back next year, and hopefully Norv won't either - promote Ron Rivera to HC and all will be gravy. Hiring Norv Turner over Rex Ryan was a dumb move too so the Chargers organization is just not looking great right now. What's new tho right? AJ Smith and Merriman should leave town together.

Raiders own the Chargers all time 54-42-2. Chargers have banners but no trophies. Chargers are basically the detroit lions of the afc west. Never won a super bowl. Maybe the Chargers luck will change when they move to Los Angeles.

Merriman should have to look at himself in the mirror prior to each game. If his reflection doesn't scare him half to death, then a few honest comments from his paycheck signing boss shouldn't ruffle his idiotic covered head..

I am a charger fan for life, but even I can not defend the way they are playing. They have many good things, but they also have some very bad things. Where is the defensive line during the games, they look pathetic. They look like they are getting over a night of partying. I know that Jamal is out, but this is no reason why the rest of the group can not get together and push people around. Where is the offensive line? You have Rivers running all over the field for his life. Last year the excuse was that Merriman was out, the previous one was that LT was hurting. Does this mean that you can not play a decent game if one of you is missing. Give me a break. Shawn, just shut your mouth and hit someone during the games. Do your talking on the field instead of with your mouth.
This is from a very unhappy Charger fan.

LOL at those asking if he's had a sack since his steroid suspension. Merriman tested positive for steroids in August before the 2006 season. He has had to pass regular steroid tests since then, which means he has been off of steroids since August of 2006. Since then, he has had 29.5 sacks! That includes the fact that he was out the entire year last year! So I don't want to see any more uninformed comments about steroids and lack of sacks.

Oh please. Everyone thinks AJ Smith is a so-called "genius." As he's the manager of this team, he needs to OWN up and take responsibility. He is the one who picks the players and that ridiculous joke of a coach Norv Turner. The Chargers USED to be a physical team and now they're flailing under the too-calm direction of Turkey Turner. When Ron Rivera ripped a new one in his defense last Sunday, that's the most excited I've been under a coach since Marty left. I'm not saying that Marty should've stayed - after all, Norv has more success in the playoffs - but isn't there a way to combine the two? I want to see fierce, aggressive attitudes all around; maybe THAT's why the defense isn't hot enough to make those plays. They lack attitude - something their head coach should instill in them as the leader. Norv is TOO quiet and calm. Show us some passion! Show us you actually want to be on that field!!
Oh, and along those lines, "run-run-pass" isn't going to cut it anymore. We're turning into a passing team, and I haven't seen much success in our run as of late. I love LT, but he hasn't had that *wow* factor for a while now. I get excited when our players even catch a 15 yard throw, because I feel completions are so rare, ha. Just throw out them big guns, Rivers. If our D can't step up, then our O will have to work 2x as hard, unfortunately without Hardwick...

Watching the Cowboys play this past weekend was embarrassing...that's probably how outsiders felt watching the Chargers. Ugh. I would've been embarrassed for my team but I was too angry and upset.
