Lost from the Saints 24-10 handling of the Jets yesterday was this filthy little play from Mark Sanchez(notes), throw a completely unnecessary shot at the knees of Jonathan Vilma(notes).
It was a dirty play for Brett Favre(notes), and it's an even dirtier one for Sanchez. At least Favre was attempting to make a block to get a few extra yards for a ball carrier. Sanchez's knee-dive appears to be completely gratuitous. Vilma, as you might suspect, wasn't happy about it.
"Actually, I was surprised he (cut me)," Vilma said in the Saints locker room. "I was very surprised. I don't know what he was doing, to be honest with you. I saw him, and thought he was just trying to buy time, and then he goes and cuts me. It was kind of dirty, and he got the penalty for it."
It wasn't an attempt to make a tackle; it was just an attempt at a man's knees. Now, I'm not saying that Sanchez is a dirty player or that he was trying to hurt anyone, because in the heat of the moment, sometimes people do out-of-character things. That's a dirty play, though.
He was called on it. It earned the Jets a 15-yard penalty, and before the week is out, it will probably earn Sanchez a fine.
