Shutdown Corner - NFL

Lost from the Saints 24-10 handling of the Jets yesterday was this filthy little play from Mark Sanchez(notes), throw a completely unnecessary shot at the knees of Jonathan Vilma(notes).

Hm. Remind you of anyone?

It was a dirty play for Brett Favre(notes), and it's an even dirtier one for Sanchez. At least Favre was attempting to make a block to get a few extra yards for a ball carrier. Sanchez's knee-dive appears to be completely gratuitous. Vilma, as you might suspect, wasn't happy about it.

"Actually, I was surprised he (cut me)," Vilma said in the Saints locker room. "I was very surprised. I don't know what he was doing, to be honest with you. I saw him, and thought he was just trying to buy time, and then he goes and cuts me. It was kind of dirty, and he got the penalty for it."

It wasn't an attempt to make a tackle; it was just an attempt at a man's knees. Now, I'm not saying that Sanchez is a dirty player or that he was trying to hurt anyone, because in the heat of the moment, sometimes people do out-of-character things. That's a dirty play, though.

He was called on it. It earned the Jets a 15-yard penalty, and before the week is out, it will probably earn Sanchez a fine.

digg delicious

If the QB goes low on you, it is really OK for you to go low on him.

Looks to me like he turtled. He still deserves the penalty and some kind of fine, but it doesn't look like he had vicious intentions. The last angle they show in that video shows him seeing Vilma turn toward him and hitting the dirt in fear.

Actually, he could of injured himself on the play also, but it was obviously unnecessary and I'm sure he will be reprimanded. He is of course still learning the NFL.

Sanchez went low cause he knew that Vilma was coming at him. If Sanchez would've stayed high, he would've lost that battle. it wasnt dirty

Mark was pissed off and tryed to hurt Vilma. I guess USC taught him how to play I know the Jets didn't RIGHT. Um, well it speaks for itself, it leaves me spechless. That low hit had no impact on the play, except for the hit itself and possibly taking an ex Jet out for the season! Or Worst!!!
