If memory serves, the NFL unveiled this new logo last summer, but it wasn't to be used until the 2008 season. That would explain why Roger Goodell's talking about it now, and the fact that I don't know for sure is probably an indication of just how how important it is.
Goodell says that the new "erect" football is modeled after the Lombardi Trophy, but I believe it's more a tribute to the league's new brand of superstars, such at Matt Leinart and Pacman Jones.
And life must be great for the Goodell daughters. "Oh, you two like the 1940 logo? Well, daddy doesn't give a damn what you think, and daddy's going with the 2008 logo. By the way, you're suspended for 8 weeks. What's that? You want a pony for Christmas? That's great, sweetie. Daddy's getting you a rat. Now go do a book report on the 2007 NFL Record & Fact Book, before daddy banishes you to the Canadian league."
