Shutdown Corner - NFL

Chase showed us video last night of Detroit News columnist Rob Parker asking Lions head coach Rod Marinelli if he wished his "daughter had married a better defensive coordinator" (Joe Barry is the Lions defensive coordinator, and he's married to Marinelli's daughter).

Parker was pasted by everyone on the FOX panel for the seemingly personal, tacky, and mean-spirited question. So it's only fair that he gets a chance to defend himself, and he happens to have a platform to do so. He wrote about it in this morning's Detroit News.

Apparently, the problem is that no one understands the relationship that Parker has with Marinelli, which is based on a deep mutual respect. Here are some snippets from the column.

Rod Marinelli and I have a different relationship.

On the surface, you might think it's adversarial. He hates me and I hate him. In reality, it's one built on mutual respect.

I respect what Marinelli is trying to accomplish as Lions coach, and he respects what I do as a sports columnist -- ask questions, tough ones, to get at the root of his team's woes.

Sounds good.

Sunday, with my attempt at humor, I was trying to get Marinelli to lighten up, have some fun after a rough day.

Who knows, Marinelli, a straight shooter who never goes off script, might actually have given us a funny quote.

He didn't. My attempt failed.

And because of that, my attempt at humor may have seemed slighted, cruel, and even insensitive.

For that, I apologize.

Oh, it was an attempt at humor. I didn't realize that. With the way that Parker has absolutely hammered Marinelli all-season long, I think anyone could be forgiven if they didn't realize that Parker suddenly morphed into Dom Irrera.

The textbook non-apology should be noted, too. He apologizes, not for what he said, but for how it seemed. See, it's your fault for taking it the wrong way.

The Lions hung in against the Colts, and I wasn't just going to make a scene with hard questions just to make a scene. I'm not that kind of reporter. I want Marinelli to open up and share his thoughts.

But there's more to our relationship.

Marinelli has gone out of his way several times to offer words of encouragement. A month or so ago, he called me on my cell phone and told me I was one of the best at asking questions and that I shouldn't change because I hit a bump in the road.

It told me about the respect he has for me. I believe he knows I respect him as well.

Here's one thing we've all learned about Rod Marinelli this year: He always, always takes the high road. The guy's not an idiot. It's not like he hasn't noticed that he has some bad players. But as long as his team is trying, he's not going to bury them in the media. He's not going to call anyone out.

About a million times this year, it would've been easy and understandable for Rod Marinelli to take the podium and say some player made a dumb play, or someone cost them a game. But he won't do it.

Yesterday, he had a perfect opportunity to call out a columnist who's been pretty hard on him all year, and again, he didn't do it. He ignored it and moved on. Maybe it was because of the respect he has for the guy. Or maybe it was just because he always, always takes the high road.

This is not the first time Rob Parker has been way out of bounds, and he has always come back with some excuse or lame attempt at an apology. As a lions fan what he did and said was not a reporter asking a coach a question about a football game it was a personal attack and one that should cost him his job. Just look at this person track record and you will see the truth, this fall he accused a Michigan State Qb for a fight he was not involved in he just made it up Rob Parker is NOT a good reporter or a good person. PERIOD

Parker is a jagoff. He piles on anyone he can and hides behind the crap he makes up as coming from his "moles".

I think maybe Mrs. Parker could have made a better choice of a husband . Really a question like this has no class Mr. Parker I'm sure your mother didn't raise you this way . You are a disappointment to your craft and anyone that defends this type of media writes in rags !

It's a funny question (nepotism being what it is), but it's pretty [profane]ty for a reporter to take it personal like that.
It'd be one thing to ask that in an interview in the offseason, where it's a little more collegial... another to do so in the post-game.

I think the whole nepotism thing and the lack of respect/poor taste Parker showed should be separated. It sounded like it was just Parker being all about himself and throwing his weight around disrespectfully. And it sounded a lot like piling on and generally bad journalism (note his record here).
There is a lot I don't know about how and when Joe Barry came to know M's daughter and what specifically his coaching resume reads. However, I must say, football at all levels seems to be the one occupation in this country where nepotism is accepted, if not tolerated. Look at Lane Kiffin. He's thinking of hiring Dad to help out at UT. The Bowdens, the Shula's.... the list is nearly endless.

Here is an excerpt from an article about Barry's hiring in 2007 after 6 seasons as linebackers coach at TB:
the Lions weren’t the only team to show interest in Barry last season. Numerous teams were vying for his services as a defensive coordinator.
But what has attracted Marinelli to the seventh-year NFL coach has been his familiarity with the Tampa 2; the Buccaneers’ defensive system brought to Detroit when he arrived last season.
The understanding of the system itself is a key factor to its effectiveness. According to Marinelli, other coaches have
tried to learn the system but have missed the mark in regards to what it takes to make it tick....Marinelli’s history with Barry dates back to 1995 at the University of Southern California. The now-head coach was the defensive line coach while Barry was a graduate assistant. Six years later in 2001, the pair was reunited in Tampa Bay.
In addition to a working relationship, Marinelli and Barry also share a common family thread, as Marinelli is Barry’s father-in-law. Despite that connection, there shouldn’t be any misconception in regards to thinking that tie had anything to do with the hiring of Barry.
“I hired one of the best,” said Marinelli. “If we didn’t get him, he’d be defensive coordinator some other place right now. I went and got the best guy to run this defense. People can look at it how they want to look at it – I’m not interested in that. I’m interested in winning. I’m getting the best guy to run this defense to get this thing exactly how I want it.

Parker's question was fantastic. I don't care about Marinelli's "high road," these clowns need to be called out on a regular basis. Rod is a disgrace, as is every coach and player on that team. Fire them all!

I already had no respect for Rob Parker, but that was truly classless. Had that been his first question you might be able to pass it off as a joke. Watch the video. He was badgering the guy for 5 or 6 questions. It's pathetic and he should be fired. He was trying to get Marinelli to go off, but he kept his composure.

There are more than just this scenario in the NFL. Maybe someone can help me out here,
but watching Sunday, I heard of an Offensive lineman being the Son in Law of the coach.
I bet Parker doesn't have the stones to badger them about the choices of love, marriage,
and blocking 300 lb D linemen.

Hey SK, horrible management....then you will love this article (from mlive.com):
Ford's support of front office should outrage Lions fans
It is time to get stomping mad.
No, not because the Detroit Lions suffered their 15th loss of the season Sunday afternoon, falling to the New Orleans Saints, 42-7, at a half-filled Ford Field, all but confirming their appointment to become the first NFL franchise to finish 0-16.
The fans accepted this team's fate months ago.
Everyone is numb to the self-destruction.
    Yeah, but there's more.
The stunning revelation that Lions owner William Clay Ford has decided to retain chief operating officer Tom Lewand and acting general manager Martin Mayhew, perhaps in their current capacities, while also keeping an "open mind" about the possible return of head coach Rod Marinelli next year, is the most maddening development in the march to imperfection.
With these declarations to Booth Newspapers beat writer Tom Kowalski (story, C1), Ford proved -- once and for all -- he cares nothing about winning. If he cared just a little, or if he had paid attention even for a moment this season, he'd realize there is no possible option but to push the reset button, ridding the front office of all personnel associated with this perennial loser.
    The situation is hopeless.
----ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!?!? How can you give a 'vote of confidence' of any kind to this group???? This franchise is garbage from top to bottom!
Mr. Ford, Sr., you have the money, buy a clue. Either let Jr. control the team and its day to day operations or, better yet, release the hostages known as fans in Detroit by SELLING THE TEAM to ownership who might care to put an NFL caliber product on the field every Sunday...Maybe, just maybe it will garner the franchise some respect and a few wins....do I see 0-32 on the horizon?

The issue remains that the Lions sucked this year. Whose fault is it? ...Marinelli is at the top of the list. Rob Parker used his creative genuise to attack the other culprit, the defense. (Wasn't Marinelli supposed to be some sort of Defensive Specialist?) Who is over the defense? His son in law. I get the joke. Good job Rob for standing your ground, it just sucks that everyone is falling for the pity party that Marinelli is hosting. He should have gracefully left the organization at 0-7! Now we are disgraced with a winless team at the end of the season, with one game to go! It sucks that I am still a fan!

Rob Parker is someone I'm too familar with as a columist but I do enjoy his appearances on First Take when he takes on that idiot Skip Bayless. Now, say what you want about the Lions, yes they suck. Stating the Detroit Lions are a terrible team is like stating Ozzy Osbourne is burnt out from drug use. Rod Marinelli is a great great guy. I agree that answers need to given about exactly why or how professional players getting paid MILLIONS can not manage to win 1 game.
HOWEVER, Rob Parker was so out of line by his comments that i almost didnt believe it was Rob Parker . Watch the video and close your eyes. Listen to his tone and volume in his voice. There wasnt an ounce of respect in anything he said. His lame explan

I thought the question was funnier than hell. Look, the team is 0-15, and the coach has his son-in-law as defensive coordinator. The usual questions, like "what could you have done differently?" or "how are your players feeling?" would have been lame. Detroit, the city as well as the team, is in a shambles right now. Those poor bastards need something--anything--to laugh about. And nepotism on a lousy team's coaching staff is a great place to start. Everyone who got all bent out of shape over this needs to lighten up.
