Chase
showed us video last night of Detroit
News columnist Rob Parker asking Lions head coach Rod Marinelli if he wished his
"daughter had married a better defensive coordinator" (Joe Barry
is the Lions defensive coordinator, and he's married to Marinelli's daughter).
Parker was pasted by everyone on the FOX panel for the seemingly personal, tacky, and mean-spirited question. So it's only fair that he gets a chance to defend himself, and he happens to have a platform to do so. He wrote about it in this morning's Detroit News.
Apparently, the problem is that no one understands the relationship that Parker has with Marinelli, which is based on a deep mutual respect. Here are some snippets from the column.
Rod Marinelli and I have a different relationship.
On the surface, you might think it's adversarial. He hates me and I hate him. In reality, it's one built on mutual respect.
I respect what Marinelli is trying to accomplish as Lions coach, and he respects what I do as a sports columnist -- ask questions, tough ones, to get at the root of his team's woes.
Sounds good.
Sunday, with my attempt at humor, I was trying to get Marinelli to lighten up, have some fun after a rough day.
Who knows, Marinelli, a straight shooter who never goes off script, might actually have given us a funny quote.
He didn't. My attempt failed.
And because of that, my attempt at humor may have seemed slighted, cruel, and even insensitive.
For that, I apologize.
Oh, it was an attempt at humor. I didn't realize that. With the way that Parker has absolutely hammered Marinelli all-season long, I think anyone could be forgiven if they didn't realize that Parker suddenly morphed into Dom Irrera.
The textbook non-apology should be noted, too. He apologizes, not for what he said, but for how it seemed. See, it's your fault for taking it the wrong way.
The Lions hung in against the Colts, and I wasn't just going to make a scene with hard questions just to make a scene. I'm not that kind of reporter. I want Marinelli to open up and share his thoughts.
But there's more to our relationship.
Marinelli has gone out of his way several times to offer words of encouragement. A month or so ago, he called me on my cell phone and told me I was one of the best at asking questions and that I shouldn't change because I hit a bump in the road.
It told me about the respect he has for me. I believe he knows I respect him as well.
Here's one thing we've all learned about Rod Marinelli this year: He always, always takes the high road. The guy's not an idiot. It's not like he hasn't noticed that he has some bad players. But as long as his team is trying, he's not going to bury them in the media. He's not going to call anyone out.
About a million times this year, it would've been easy and understandable for Rod Marinelli to take the podium and say some player made a dumb play, or someone cost them a game. But he won't do it.
Yesterday, he had a perfect opportunity to call out a columnist who's been pretty hard on him all year, and again, he didn't do it. He ignored it and moved on. Maybe it was because of the respect he has for the guy. Or maybe it was just because he always, always takes the high road.

It'd be one thing to ask that in an interview in the offseason, where it's a little more collegial... another to do so in the post-game.

There is a lot I don't know about how and when Joe Barry came to know M's daughter and what specifically his coaching resume reads. However, I must say, football at all levels seems to be the one occupation in this country where nepotism is accepted, if not tolerated. Look at Lane Kiffin. He's thinking of hiring Dad to help out at UT. The Bowdens, the Shula's.... the list is nearly endless.

the Lions werent the only team to show interest in Barry last season. Numerous teams were vying for his services as a defensive coordinator.
But what has attracted Marinelli to the seventh-year NFL coach has been his familiarity with the Tampa 2; the Buccaneers defensive system brought to Detroit when he arrived last season.
The understanding of the system itself is a key factor to its effectiveness. According to Marinelli, other coaches have
tried to learn the system but have missed the mark in regards to what it takes to make it tick....Marinellis history with Barry dates back to 1995 at the University of Southern California. The now-head coach was the defensive line coach while Barry was a graduate assistant. Six years later in 2001, the pair was reunited in Tampa Bay.
In addition to a working relationship, Marinelli and Barry also share a common family thread, as Marinelli is Barrys father-in-law. Despite that connection, there shouldnt be any misconception in regards to thinking that tie had anything to do with the hiring of Barry.
I hired one of the best, said Marinelli. If we didnt get him, hed be defensive coordinator some other place right now. I went and got the best guy to run this defense. People can look at it how they want to look at it Im not interested in that. Im interested in winning. Im getting the best guy to run this defense to get this thing exactly how I want it.

but watching Sunday, I heard of an Offensive lineman being the Son in Law of the coach.
I bet Parker doesn't have the stones to badger them about the choices of love, marriage,
and blocking 300 lb D linemen.

Ford's support of front office should outrage Lions fans
It is time to get stomping mad.
No, not because the Detroit Lions suffered their 15th loss of the season Sunday afternoon, falling to the New Orleans Saints, 42-7, at a half-filled Ford Field, all but confirming their appointment to become the first NFL franchise to finish 0-16.
The fans accepted this team's fate months ago.
Everyone is numb to the self-destruction.
Yeah, but there's more.
The stunning revelation that Lions owner William Clay Ford has decided to retain chief operating officer Tom Lewand and acting general manager Martin Mayhew, perhaps in their current capacities, while also keeping an "open mind" about the possible return of head coach Rod Marinelli next year, is the most maddening development in the march to imperfection.
With these declarations to Booth Newspapers beat writer Tom Kowalski (story, C1), Ford proved -- once and for all -- he cares nothing about winning. If he cared just a little, or if he had paid attention even for a moment this season, he'd realize there is no possible option but to push the reset button, ridding the front office of all personnel associated with this perennial loser.
The situation is hopeless.
----ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!?!? How can you give a 'vote of confidence' of any kind to this group???? This franchise is garbage from top to bottom!
Mr. Ford, Sr., you have the money, buy a clue. Either let Jr. control the team and its day to day operations or, better yet, release the hostages known as fans in Detroit by SELLING THE TEAM to ownership who might care to put an NFL caliber product on the field every Sunday...Maybe, just maybe it will garner the franchise some respect and a few wins....do I see 0-32 on the horizon?
