Ricky Williams'(notes) long and weird tenure as a Miami Dolphin has evidently come to an end. Monday night, Williams got honest with WQAM-560 in Miami, with his most stinging criticism revolving around the team's season-ending 38-7 loss to the Patriots.
From Ben Volin at The Daily Dolphin:
"Usually after a rough season there's a sense of relief when it's over with, but I didn't feel like that," he said. "It's the contrast with what they have going on in New England and what we have going on here, and it's a very stark contrast.
"They had less to play for than we did ... and they played harder than any team we played all year, and I just expect that from my team. [...] I'm not angry at my teammates. I'm angry at the situation. That's the coaches, myself, teammates, that's everyone. That's the whole environment that we have there, and I'm just frustrated that it's not better."
"It's like we weren't prepared, we didn't show up," he said. "I had a little bit of a sense during the week of practice that we weren't maybe as focused or preparing as well as we needed to."
I don't know if this would change Ricky's mind at all, but Sparano might be done as a Dolphin, too. His job status is up in the air after consecutive 7-9 seasons. He and Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland met with team owner Stephen Ross on Monday, but no decisions were announced. That could be coming Tuesday.
Not that the Dolphins will throw any fits over losing Ricky. He carried the ball just 159 times this season (another reason he's unhappy in Miami). He did pound out 4.2 yards per carry, better than the 3.7 per carry achieved by Ronnie Brown(notes), who carried 200 times.
Ricky should probably make sure the grass will be greener elsewhere, though. If he doesn't like Sparano's style or the general atmosphere in Miami, that's fine -- everyone's got the right to go where they think they'll be happy. But there's not a huge demand out there for 33-year-old running backs. I can't think of a single team that could guarantee Ricky right now that he'll get more than 159 carries next season.
