Rex Ryan is a natural actor. Sure, he believes in all the bravado and the guarantees and the trash talk and the hype, but beneath the exterior you get the sense that those theatrical flourishes are part of the deal, like he's in on the joke.
The New York Jets coach will get a chance to act for real next summer when he appears in an upcoming Adam Sandler movie called "I Hate You, Dad."
"He's my lawyer," Sandler told Rich Eisen on his eponymous podcast. "My character in the next one is kind of a dirt bag guy and he's in trouble and Rex is an expensive lawyer in town and he takes care of me. He's also a mammoth Patriots fan in the movie."
Sandler said the character talks about Tom Brady(notes) and Bill Belichick, and probably not in the backhanded way that Rex does when he takes the podium at press conferences.
"It really wasn't a Patriot thing but my suit, it was pretty obvious it was a New England deal," Ryan added at his Friday press conference. "It was fun. I'm not going to make a guarantee that there's an Oscar coming up. DeNiro, Ryan? I don't know. You'll have to see.
"That was what was so fun about it. When I read it, I was like, 'Oh my gosh.' It was a lot of fun being on that set. I will say this — it is way more work than I thought it would be. I thought you'd go in there, rattle off a couple lines, that'd be it. 'Oh we have to shoot that again' — are you kidding me? I felt like a player -- 'run that play again, run that play again.' It was a blast, really watching Adam Sandler. He's a funny guy, and not just in movies. It was a great experience."
Basically, he's playing his football opposite. Sandler's scriptwriters should have gone for the gusto and made every part of Ryan's character different from the real Rex. In that case, the inexpensive Pats fan lawyer wouldn't swear, he'd eat well, he'd be repulsed by feet and he would deliver on his preseason guarantees.
