Report: The Who will rock Super Bowl XLIV

SI.com's Hot Clicks breaks the news this morning that The Who will be performing during halftime of Super Bowl XLIV. There was some earlier talk of Bon Jovi playing the gig, but I guess that didn't work out.

Opinions will vary, as they always do. Optimistically, I do believe that The Who has some songs that will make for a fun halftime show -- "Baba O'Riley", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Who Are You", and "The Seeker", to throw out a few. I'm also assured by Jamie Mottram, who's seen them perform live recently, that The Who can "still bring it."

Myself, I've accepted that the Super Bowl Halftime show just isn't aimed at entertaining me. Or anyone under the age of 40, for that matter. It's aimed at entertaining (or at least not offending), the slightly older, extremely mainstream audience that the biggest television event of the year draws. Four of the last five Super Bowl Halftime acts have been white males in their late '50s or older.

I'm cool with it, but I'm anxious to get everyone else's thoughts. Would you rather have someone a little more current, or are you cool with Roger Goodell only picking bands that are represented in his personal CD collection?

I am way under 40 and I like the Who but that does not mean they are not OLD. Like Grace Slick said "leave rock'n'roll to the young people". They can't be as bad as Bruce Springsteen and his crappy show the last time. And I would rather see the Who than some overrated pop singer.

I think the NFL really needs to think about bringing excitement back to the halftime show. A considerable percentage of people used to watch the Super Bowl because of the halftime show, but recently the "wow" factor of it has be null and void. I think the NFL needs to get back to larger, more recognizable current names and bringing back more than just one artist or group. Also, the past 5 Super Bowls have been Rock (Prince is iffy- but he played mostly rock songs during his performance), I think the NFL need to widen their range of genres of music as well. Overall, I have been disappointed with the Halftime Shows under dictator Goodell

Respect the classics, man. Heck, I'm 17 and I like The Who better than all the rap garbage out there. If they could just get Led Zeppelin...

How the hell can The Who be bad? They're friggin' awesome. I'm only 26, and I know that. If you're a true fan of rock and roll, doesn't make a difference what age--The Who are a HUGE act.
They're gonna kick a$$ at the SB.

Anyone a litlle more current? Like who...Jonas Brothers? Miley Cyrus? Face it people; if you think the Who are only for people over 40 or (pointing at you MJD) "in their late 50's" then you suffer from a serious lack of taste. On the other hand, if we were stuck with Bon Jovi there might be a reason for debate.

What's wrong with having the Who in your personal collection? As long as they can play up to par, it's ten times better than getting most bands from today.
-From 19-year old for the classics.

I like mostly alt and indie rock, and i like classic rock too. However, an all-rock halftime superbowl show just doesn't work. It's awesome to watch a guitar solo, i just don't want to see twenty minutes of it or just some dudes rocking out. Thats cool live, not really on T.V. The superbowl is big enough to get multiple big names for halftime.Grab The Fray, Kayne, and Daft Punk. That would be nuts, especially since they did coves of each other and stuff

Who the hell cares about the GD halftime show. I think the name says it all, THE WHO....THE HELL ARE THEY. The only people that have to suffer through this hippie infested garbage are the poor saps that spent thousands of dollars for their tickets. Myself, I wont be watching the halftime show, same as every year. I guess GODdell dosent want a wardrobe malfunction on his hands. WHO CARES it the halftime show, time to fill up on beer, eat food, and herbal therapy.

Remember when football catered to Men. Was a Man sport, and those who played it were "real" Men. Yea not so much since the 1990's. A real halftime event would be letting the LFL play and run around in their underwear. I truely wonder what the Superbowls ratings our during that halftime. IT seems to get more and more absurd as the years progress. I always change the channel at half time to watch something worth seeing.
