Report: Steve Spagnuolo out in St. Louis

The first firing of the post-season comes as a surprise to few. Jay Glazer reports St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo was fired.

During his three years in St. Louis, Spagnuolo only won 10 games. Still, he was optimistic after his team lost to the 49ers on Sunday.

"We certainly think we should be better than 2-14. But I do think there was tremendous growth," Spagnuolo said. "You grow more in a situation like this than you do when it's all going easy, and you find out a lot about people in a situation like this.

Several of his players spoke on his behalf and hoped he would return. That group included safety Quentin Mikell.

"I feel like that we have guys in this locker room who believe in each other and want to play for Coach. We want to win. We went out there and tried to give it our best, and I think that's what it's really about," Mikell said. "It's out of our hands, but you can see we play for Spags and we're going to continue to play for him. I don't want to see anything happen to him."

Spagnuolo had to deal with injuries over the course of the last season, particularly at quarterback. Sam Bradford's ankle and A.J. Feely's thumb made them miss games.

But in the end, the only thing that mattered was his 10-37 record.

UPDATE: Adam Schefter reports that general manager Billy Devaney was also informed that he would not return.
