Shutdown Corner - NFL

I'm a big fan of reclamation projects and redemption stories. You know, guy finds success, guy becomes troubled, guy develops a major drug problem, guy falls off the end of the world, guy gets his life back together and then the whole world joins hands and sings ... that kind of thing.

But even I, upon hearing the news that the Dolphins have brought in uber-troubled quarterback Quincy Carter for a workout, first thought, "Boy, that's a really bad sign for the Dolphins."

After being a 2nd-round NFL draft pick, starting for the Cowboys as a rookie, and eventually leading them to the playoffs, Carter's career took a turn.

After a brief stint with the Jets, some drug problems and a bipolar disorder, Carter was cut by the Montreal Allouettes of the Canadian League, cut by the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings of the arenafootball2, and most recently played for the Kansas City Brigade of the Arena League.

And now, here he is, once again working out for an NFL team. I'm happy for him. Of course, he's still a long, long, long way from making a roster, but that he's even sharing a field again with NFL players is amazing.

Still, the overriding thought in my head is, "Quincy Carter? Goodness gracious. John Beck, Chad Henne, and Josh McCown, you should all feel much shame. Who are the Dolphins bringing in next, John Friesz?"

Maybe it's just Bill Parcells doing a favor for an old quarterback of his, throwing him a bone and helping to get his name out there in NFL circles again. But I hope it's more than that, as I truly hope that Quincy Carter's got his life together, he's up with hope, down with dope, and ready to reach his potential as a person.

Gracias, FanHouse.

They should also try out Flutie, Kordell, Aikman, Steve Young, Eric Crouch, Tim Couch, Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, John Elway, Jim Kelly, let's see, who am i missing?

He really wasn't that bad of a QB (in 03 at least)...personal problems aside if he can play I say let him...I don't think the football Gods are mean enough to make the Dolphins have an 07 repeat...but then again he made us suffer through a few 5-11 seasons so anything is possible.
I am starting to think the Tuna is getting old person dementia. People call the Boys classless because they recruit from prisons and I want to know what you call a team who recruits from the dumpster?

Ha, they might as well try to make a run at Rex Grossman. Visit www.YOUbeQB.com for a new spin on Fantasy Football.

Another victum of drugs- at least he seems to be trying to get it together. Whether he can still be effective-we'll see. If nothing else I hope he has that monkey off of his back.

So many people in the world do not understand, nor care too, the bi-polar disorder and how it affects your actions and addictions. Drugs and this disorder go hand in hand, especially during the compulsive episodes. Gambling is another part of the disorder that is potentially devistating. I'm not going to go any further into the subject but will just close with my hopes on his continued recovery from the drugs and working to manage better the disorder. I hope Miami gets better as a team and can again soon whip the cheating Patsies every year again. Go RAIDERS!

we saw this in dallas, the new jersey con man "for those who don't know (bill parcells)" has gone out of his way to recruit old, decrepit, cheap has beens. and they will give him a few games and then get a contract then fall back off the face of the earth.

If the Dolphins are that desperate for a good quality QB, why not sign Brett Farve to a 2yr deal to mentor Beck and Henne? I bet the Fins would make it to the playoffs...!!! If you're gonna bring back the dead, at lease do it with someone who still has life.....Carter...yeah right.

guys guys their just trying the guy out and no we dont want Brett F.Our young QBs are struggling now but i feel they'll be ok after a couple of preseason games. I think thats when we'll see who'll be our starter. rebuilding a team takes some time. turning them into a contender will take 2-3 yrs.yes we've gone through some tough times watching our team not make the playoffs and going 1-15. But i have faith in Bill P.That he will turn this team around. We're in good shape for another draft pick. just hang in there stick with them back them up and dont just jump ship yet.

I hope the best for your effort to make a come back to the Big league once again. Remember nothing beat a try, but a fail. Put God first in your life. But remember prayer does make a difference in one life. Good Luck in your effort.

I wonder if Parcells called Jeff George in for a tryout??? I also heard they're going to bring in Mark Duper to play WR. He's gotta be 50 and could probably catch more balls then Ginn and Hagan!

Do not put Flutie's name in with Quincy Carter. Doug Flutie was a fine QB and was not a drug user.
