Plaxico Burress has a friend in Joey Porter

Joey presents some things to think about, I suppose. But Porter admits that Plaxico's a very close friend of his, and when emotion's involved, it skews judgment. So right off the bat, that takes a little bit of the authority out of Porter's opinion. Also taking away some of the authority from Porter's opinion is the fact that he's Joey Porter.

But on the other hand, the fact remains that Joey Porter is a lot closer to walking in Plaxico's shoes than I am. I'm not rich, I'm not famous and there aren't a lot of thugs out there itching to risk 25-to-Life for a shot at my Timex, my $11.50 in cash or my Kroger Plus Shopper's Card.

So I don't want to cast aside his opinion completely so casually. He knows the environment of which he speaks, and I can only guess at it. As an outside observer, though, it would still be my opinion that having a gun with you doesn't necessarily make you safer.

Rare is the headline that reads anything like, "NFL player avoids danger by waving a gun around."

The other thing I think Porter is ignoring here is that we have things called "laws" and the "laws" say you can't carry a gun into a club, then you probably shouldn't carry a gun into a club.

I remember when Porter got shot in the butt. There is something to be said about former Steelers players being shot in interesting manners/body parts

Any law that prohibits gun possession is unconstitutional and at odds with the second amendment. That does mean that any particular person should carry a gun. Do other millionaires carry guns? And for what reason?

ScottDawg, that is absolutly untrue. Plax is not in trouble for owning the gun, but for carrying a loaded firearm in public. You have to have permits to carry a concealed gun. The 2nd amendment does not give unlimited freedom with guns. It's a public safety issue. Do you really want everyone in NYC to be walking around with a loaded gun? It would be anarchy.
I'm a gun owner and I support concealed carry laws, but there has to be limits.

ScottDawg, mikez is right. Similarly, there's limitations to the 1st amendment (free speech)... no right is unlimited where it infringes on someone ELSE's rights.

One story no one brought up yet was Jevon Walker was found Beaten up and Knocked unconcience by Las Vegas Authorities. He was mugged and beaten severely and left on the street a few years ago. People are unpredictable and people who are desperate enough to rob these players are even more unpredictable. I don't think carrying a gun is bad as long as they do it legally.

The video you requested is currently unavailable. And by the way, why does everybody in the States have to bear a gun just because he has a constitutional right to own one? You missed the time you could have stopped this gun violence by putting away the 2nd because you have enough military, police and intelligence agencies. I wonder who actually remembers what the 2nd was about.

joeseph p - The last I heard the theory was that Walker was targeted while at a casino showing bling and throwing cash around. There are ways to be wealthy, have a good time and not find yourself in an alley with your head stove in. Not to accuse him of doing anything illegal, but he might have been trying to score some weed or something and the deal went bad. Or maybe he just got followed. I'm just sayin'....

A terrible thing happened yes...but I am sure who ever beat the crap out of him never took note he was an NFL player, just someone loaded. It could have happened to anyone unfortunately. I agree with Scott E "There are ways to be wealthy, have a good time and not find yourself in an alley with your head stove in".
Having a gun does not stop a crime, you would have to walk around constantly waving one. You are at the mercy of the criminal holding the gun at you, whether you have one strapped to you or not.
It is amazing this only happens to NFL players...not NHL, NBA MLB, Golfers...hmmmm

Scott E- Just cause a person decides to live lavishly shouldnt make him a target. Whether the Speculation of him getting drugs is true or not he could of seriously of been injured and or killed.
Carrying a gun for protection is fine with me as long as its legally.

Of course there's never going to be a headline of "Player saved by waving a gun around," but that's not how to act with a gun. There's gun safety and use classes that teach you what to do, and that's why we have the concealed carry permit system. Nothing wrong with having a gun with you, if it's legal and done correctly. Plaxico did neither. He messed up, and now he's paying the price. I'm fine with that. But being stupid with a gun does not invalidate the idea of having a gun being safer. Now, I don't want to make that argument (I'm not prepared, really), but I'm just saying, don't take one instance and generalize a rule. I know MJD's just talking about the protection argument that Porter and Plaxico would make in this specific scenario, but I want to avoid any generalization.
I'm crashed from caffeine right now, so I'm not totally sure how much sense I made.

These athletes are great to watch on TV whether it's NFL or NBA. But some of these guys in the real world think they need to be in the thug mentality to "keep it real", Plax case and even pacmans case are keeping it real gone bad. They got the money, GET A BODY GUARD! Go to vegas in the off season and see SOME of these players with their entourage are the ones that start the trouble.

Joseph, you're right living lavishly shouldn't make people a target, but it does. Thieves target easy marks, and people who suddenly come into money are the easiest targets ever.

Considering he had a permit for the gun that had expired (meaning the gun could inexorably be linked to him if used), and the situation surrounding football players being mugged and/or killed in the past few years, I cant help but feel for Plaxico. Even if guns dont actually protect someone, I cant imagine him not feeling safer with it. Who knows, maybe he went to the club with his girlfriend and was taking it to protect people other than himself...can we blame him for that? The gun wasnt stolen, it wasnt used on anyone, and if the same thing had happened to him in Florida, he wouldnt have even been arrested (Florida laws are much more open to gun use). I feel bad for Plaxico in this whole situation

I think I can understand where these guys are coming from. On the other hand, I can see no good reason, ever, for a man to go into a night club with a loaded firearm. That is a tragedy just waiting to happen. Let's look at it for a minute. Plax is in the night club. Someone tries to rob him or harm him. He pulls out his gun. They bad guy pulls out his gun and who knows how many innocent people get shot. I'm not anti-gun, but bringing that gun into a crowded night club was stupid and dangerous, not to mention, against the law. If he doesn't agree with the law, then he should fight to change it, but being a celebrity does not make him above the law.

    Fitting consequences for a dumba$$:
    1. Don't sentence him in court... Just give him back the gun; anyone as retarded as Plaxico Burress will surely mishandle it again and end up punishing himself! lol
    2. He can play in the post-season, but he's not allowed to wear pads. :D
    3. Move his contract to Detroit. lol
    4. He has to change that ridiculous name...and someone gets to slap his mother for naming him something that would've better suited a mouthwash company.
    5. Drop the charges, but at the last minute try to grab them, and accidentally convict him of having worn out the elastic on his underwear.
    6. Send him to Afghanistan- he might inadvertently kill Bin Laden.
    7. Dress him up like a dog, and give him to Micheal Vick.
    8. Dress him up like a QB, and Joey Porter will sack the $hit out of him. (Go DOLPHINS!)
Heheh, just goofing off... I really don't care about this issue one way or the other... Let him play, don't...Who cares? Idiot parents? Sports stars ARE NOT role models...Wasn't anyone listening to Charles Barkley ? YOU are responsible for teaching your kids what behaviors should and should not be emulated. Not some dumb fukkin jamoke with an IQ of 7. Truthfully, if your kid is stupid enough to turn a glock on himself because he saw Plaxico Burress do it, then the little fukk is probably better off dead...
