Shutdown Corner - NFL

I was waiting to comment on Deadspin's story about Browns general manager Phil Savage shooting off a "[fudge] you" e-mail to a rude and abusive fan, because it seemed slightly far-fetched. My guess what that someone was straight up trying to make him look bad, or that someone else sent the e-mail, but I was wrong. Savage copped to it today.

Here's the story, first unearthed by man-beast A.J. Daulerio. A fan sent the following e-mail to Phil Savage during the Browns game against Buffalo on Monday night:

You are easily the worst GM in the NFL. Chud, Crennel and Tucker should NOT have jobs. How the hell do you play prevent defense the entire game? How do you NOT use Jerome Harrison more? Why the hell would you throw the ball with 6 minutes left? This is officially a regime that is worse than Butch Davis'. By the way, just like last week - this email was written while the Browns still had the lead.

And Savage quickly fired back this e-mail:

Go root for Buffalo - f#@* you

Well then.

Lord knows I've never been in a position where a stranger could abusively criticize my job performance with the complete protection of anonymity, so I can't relate at all to what Savage must've felt when he got that e-mail. I know I've never wanted to send an e-mail like the one Savage sent. Nuh uh. No sir. Never.

Of course, Savage's job is one that falls directly under the public eye, so he and everyone else with such a job has to accept things like this as coming with the territory. No matter how much he's tempted, he's got to rise above. Better to just send the guy back a standard form letter inviting him to go ahead and place an order for season tickets next year and go on with his day.

A firable offense, though? Heck no. At the end of the day, one rude guy was told a rude thing. This is not something that upsets the delicate balance of the universe. No harm, no foul.

It might not help Savage in the court of public opinion, though, which is where his employment status is largely decided.

I knew this story would go National. It was bound to.
The person who wrote Phil and received the "Go root for Buffalo - f#@* you" response thinks it is funny and also thinks Phil shouldn't be fired, suspended or fined for it.

First of all, why is Savage looking at e-mail during the game?  Shouldn't he be concentrating on the game?  Or was he just uninterested or bored to the point that looking at e-mail was more interesting.Second, it was Savage the fined and suspended Winslow for actions that were detremental to the team and organization.  Is Savage going to hold himself to these same high standards?

PHIL RULES!!!! Great GM. Not his fault harrison is never used. Savage can only put the best team he can together. Every year He is doing what he can to help this team. He is the least of the browns problems, and anyone who blames him should quit watching sports because you don't know anything.

As a die hard Browns fan,i agree totally with the response Savage made. Give Lewis the ball more, not Harrison,25 times a game out of Lewis get's a W for the Browns. Period.

If they fire Savage, i;m selling my seats. All he's done is put this team in a position to win. The Browns will come around. I don't agreee with the choice for head coach, bit he did have the brains to draft Joe Thomas AND Brady Quinn in the same draft. The Browns will figure it out. I SUPPORT YOU PHIL!

Savage had a right to be angry, but should not have used the word he used. However, he said he was sorry and it is over. What's the big deal?

Savage shouldn't have replied or stooped to that guys level. The head coach should be the one to answer those questions, not the GM. I doubt that fan would have gotten a straight answer from Romeo either. I'm sure Savage said the "f word" quite a few time the past few games where ever he watches the games .. and it would have been directed at the players on the field. (Ironically the same as other fans were doing while watching the game)

Back in the day, people used to say $hit to people all the time and it was no big deal. Now that everything sits on a server forever, nobody can say $hit to anybody. I have no problem with what Savage did. If you're going to start something via e-mail, you deserve whatever you get back, I don't care how vulgar or obscene it is. And if you disagree, you can go fork yourself.

It is a free country, say whatever you want. Why should a fan be able to attack a GM without him fighting back. These retarded fan would not last one minute in a NFL game along with 99.9 % of all other fans. I believe fans are to hard on players and teams. I would love to get every heckler on the playing field and tell them to throw the ball. Now a GM might have an easier job, I sure as hell know I could draft better then MILLEN and the lions. But even though Kitna is the worst quarterback in the league, he is better then I will ever be. GO LIONS, win a dang game!! WE WANT BARRY BACK!!!

Savage is the best thing to happen to the Browns in a long time. The offense is on track but we need to get the D working.
