Shutdown Corner - NFL

Are the wheels about to come off in Indianapolis? The Colts, models of consistency over the past decade, are going through some off-season turmoil in the wake of Tony Dungy's retirement. And Peyton Manning(notes), for one, isn't happy about it.

Offensive coordinator Tom Moore and offensive line coach Howard Mudd left the team last month in what was described as a decision based on a change to the NFL's pension plan. This sounds like a very reasonable explanation (the two men, aged 70 and 67, respectively, were able to get a lump-sum payout of $1 million as a result). Considering the circumstances, it also sounds like a convenient excuse.

With new coach Jim Caldwell trying to mold the offense into his own image, it's not too much of a stretch to think that Moore and Mudd were either nudged out or left after sensing that Caldwell's new direction might not jibe with their own ideas. This suggestion has been denied, but the mere fact that it had to be denied suggests that others are thinking the same thing too.

There are now questions about whether Moore or Mudd will return in different roles. Colts GM Bill Polian wants them back, but Clyde Christensen and Pete Metzelaars (you may remember him from Super Tecmo Bowl) have already "assumed the duties" of coordinator and line coach even though they apparently haven't been promoted.

Confused? So is Peyton Manning:

"I can't tell you what's going on. I will say I don't think it's been the most properly communicated scenario around here.
It's not a situation that I'm just thrilled about. I think the communication has been pretty poor in my opinion. Somebody says one thing, then somebody else says another thing.

I'm not sure everybody's on the same page in this building. I'm just trying to focus on playing quarterback well."

Wow, Manning doesn't usually like to cast stones at people until after he collapses in the playoffs.

Sounds like all is not well in Colts-land. It's a distressing sign for Indy fans, but news that could bring some hope to the rest of the AFC.

Thanks, Stampede Blue

If nothing else, I'm sure the entire Lions organization would bow to Peyton's every whim if he agreed to get his ass whomped in the backfield like every other qb they've had since I can remember.

Welcome to the real world Peyton? That was lame. They need to take care of this guy. He's not losing for them. He's won a superbowl for them. What else does he need to do? I'm sure the Colts management will come together and make the right desicions. Problem is Dungys gone. They really nessed up on that one!

Don't be too suprised if the Colts suck this year and miss the playoffs. If they do make the playoffs, they'll still get another beat down by the Chargers like they do every year! GO BOLTS!!!!!

don't blame the old fart who decided to retire so he could get a $1 mill pay out. i am sure he's been well compensated while a coach in the NFL for so long....but still who can argue about that pay off to retire.
i guess cry baby manning wasn't interested in paying him out of his own pocket to stay...come on you only make about $15 mill from the Colts and who knows how much from endorsements.....you can't cut the man a check?
again peyton....what a great leader you are.

It says hope for AFC because Indy has been in the playoffs and contenders for past 7 seasons. They usually lose in first round buts thats not the point. Wow he made a comment against his team, once the season starts no one is going to mention this, This article is dumb there are so many players who talk against management or they are not getting the right players.

lmao some of ya are real f'in idiots! not in any of that statement from manning was he crying about anything he was stating how it was, damn are some of ya's are absolute dip [profane]s (mw), go back to school and learn how to read... and none of this will effect how the guy's going to perform on the field he's a perfessional and he know's how to play with the best of em and no coaching changes are going to change that, unless the team just lies down they'll probably be just as good as they have been...... also unless u never complained about something in ur life just shut the f' up before making stupid comments

It's clear to everyone that the colts are on a downward spiral. It happens to all great teams. Everyone had better watch out for the steelers and ravens in the afc and the giants and eagles in the nfc. One common theme among those teams; great defense. Defense wins super bowls. just ask Tom Brady about that. He folded pretty quick against the giants D in the super bowl. GO RAVENS!!!

So was Marino. So was Theisman. So was many, many others. You get a good QB you hold onto him like ya'll do your little john...just not so much....plzzz..

Going down the same road as the Broncos. Such a shame with Dungy gone and the organization will go back to the late 90's again.
